Hilaria, his wife, is rather homely. Not particularly pleasant to look at. And she apparently is overusing botox to a ridiculous degree since she has now made her eyes crooked and one eyebrow dramatically higher than the other. Ridiculous to use botox at age 29. She isn't very pretty. Surprising that Alec wouldn't want someone better looking. But I think he fell in love with the idea that she made him over into a healthier, slimmer being - so it's 'love' based on how she makes him feel - not so much love of the characteristics and personality of the woman. So he fell in love with himself.
Just because something is possible doesn't make it a good idea.

Older guys marrying younger women... These men may or may not want kids, but when a woman is 28 and married, as Alec's wife is, I would imagine she wants a kid--even if her husband dies before the kid comes of age or even finishes college. Who the hell wants a kid at 54 years of age? Not me. But then I haven't married a fertile 28-year old woman--and have no plans to do so.
