Boy Scouts Discussing End to Gay Ban!

Just got this in an email from Scouts For Equality: They told us this day would never come. Earlier this afternoon the Boy Scouts of America announced that their board is actively considering an end to their national ban on gay and non-theist members and leaders. “[C]hartered organizations that oversee and deliver scouting would accept membership and select leaders consistent with their organization’s mission, principles or religious beliefs,” said Deron Smith, a spokesman for the Boy Scouts’ national organization. This is a Big Deal.

• Looks like they are proposing a loophole. Mormon funded troops would still be able to ban gay leaders. But if the Mormon Church once again threatens to pull their funding, this proposal will go away.

• Seems like a lot of gay men are into this sort of thing, doing good, and building things, so it makes sense. Good for the Boy Scouts if they lift this ban.

• If they allow local chapters to decided to ban or not, won't there be thousands of chapters across the country where a kid comes out and everybody takes a vote to kick his ass out or not? Sounds humiliating.
