Mulaney himself is a terrible actor and has a really annoying presence.
This is basically a ripoff of SEINFELD, isn't it?
There were funny lines but the setup, the characters, the blocking and the direction of the show are awful- not to mention Mulaneys awful acting is actually a huge distraction. This is he second pilot in as many years. Why didnt the network force him to take a couple of acting lessons.
I find nothing appealing about him. Neither his humor nor his looks.
This is he second pilot in as many years.
No it's not. This is the same show that was over at NBC, only now it's over at FOX.
I love John Mulaney. His standup is awesome. He also wrote my favorite bits on SNL, which has sucked since he left.
But I don't have high hopes for this show, sadly. It's a failure in concept, which means it's not going to be easy to fix.
Funny standup does not always translate to funny sitcoms.
I watched ... s'not funny.
Martin Short is what sucked. I don't like the premise.
[R7] it is his second pilot. Fox wanted him to rework the tone of the show. The original pilot was a single-camera vs the final multi-camera format.
No, R11. It's the same show. Why are you making shit up? Weird.
It's a weird criticism to say he's had 2 pilots in as many years. This is the same show. Same producers, same writers, same cast, same characters, same premise. There may have been some tweaking done, but every new show goes through that.
But honestly, and I'm saying this as a huge John Mulaney fan, they should have reworked the format. He would have done well with a format like 30 Rock. The multi-cam format just highlights his woodenness. And he needs stronger supporting characters.
As it is, it just feels stale and dated.
This isn't the same pilot he made for NBC. That version began with the character giving up drinking.
It's the same show. Same crew. Same cast. Same characters. Same production team. Same format. Yeah, some slight changes were made. That does not make it a new show. Can you not read? FOX picked up the show after NBC didn't. To say he's had two different shows in two years is completely misleading.
It's like saying when 30 Rock cane out that it was her 2nd attempt at a series since they reshot the pilot.
Um the original pilot (unaired) for 30 Rock was completely different. In fact half the characters and cast were different.
R17, and no one claims Tina Fey had 2 different shows. Not sure what your point was.
R7, if Mulaney is such a great writer he should have written this series.
I would love, love, love to be a sitcom star.
But, dear God, I can't imagine being lucky enough to get a job and then landing on a show like this which is just shit.
I don't think anyone is trying to say he has done pilots for two different series. Just saying, the pilot you saw tonight was not the same one they shot for NBC.
Maybe if this show fails, he can go back to SNL. He should replace Colin Jost as head writer and on Weekend Update.
Weird how L:orne loves him so...YET he never was made a performer on SNL.
Well I think the episode demonstrates pretty well why he wasn't a sketch performer on SNL.
ok r23, I haven't watched it yet.
r22, he was worshiped as a writer there. I don't think he wanted it, or LM would let him.
He's one of those guys who's funnier in the room than in a sitcom where the focus isn't as clearly on the words, like a sketch show.
He did make a few appearances on Weekend Update. He also won an Emmy for SNL. He left the same time that Wiig and Hader left. The show has sucked since then.
He's made a bunch of appearances on The Kroll Show, and he's funny on there. He and Nick Kroll are besties.
I think this show just isn't the right showcase for him.
His comedy special New In Town is on Netflix. It's pretty awesome.
He didn't even bother to write new material for his standup opener. Which is now entirely cliche, by the way, after Seinfeld and Louie have done it better.
Horrible! Bet they only show 3 of them
I have an enormous crush on him and no idea why. I would totally do him.
I like John Mulaney.
I hated "Mulaney."
I wanted to like it, and I like Martin Short and Nasim Pedrad, but it was really "meh." And whose idea was it to name the black guy "Motif?"
Mulaney is a Nielsen flop, losing nearly half of Family Guy's audience. Expect it to be pulled after next week's airing.
It's a terrible time slot for me. I'd watch it live if it were on another night.
I hope they at least dump the remaining episodes online. I like the guy and wouldn't mind checking them out.
Fortune Feimster is supposed to be on one episode. I hope they at least make it to that one. She needs to be on a sitcom somewhere. Maybe they can make her a recurring character on 2 Broke Girls.
If so, he better find his Louis-Dreyfus soon.
R36, I'm still surprised they didn't pick up her show with Tina Fey.
And no one has pointed out what a train wreck Eliot Gould is playing an old queen?
R39, he was more believable than those queens on Vicious.
His supporting cast is weak. And Martin Short seemed to be in a different sitcom. Too bad because I like John Mulaney but I believe I may not be seeing much of him.
So long. Farewell.
Short plays evil better than comedy. He's funny as a talk show guest but he's not good in funny roles. He's great in "Inherent Vice."
"Maybe if this show fails"
From "TV By the Numbers" today:
Mulaney is certain to be canceled. Even on the train wreck that is Fox this season, it's premiere ratings landed it directly into the Cancellation Bear's jaws. The bear wouldn't be surprised to see it at 7:30pm Sunday sooner, rather than later, to burn off whatever episodes remain.
I love his stand up routines, he seems very talented. You would think he'd recognize this crap for what it was and not get involved.
Maybe it was one of those things that started out promising in development but deteriorated when the suits got involved?
I agree the show is [italic]just awful[/italic] and the person who said upthread that it seems like a bad sitcom from the 80s is correct.
R45, personally, I wouldn't say no to the money.
I was in debt for years working in a chosen field that's lots of fun but doesn't pay well.
A few outside projects got me out of debt and now I get by each month, carefully working at not slipping back into debt.
He'll come out a few hundred thousand in the bank, I'm sure, for a failed series like this.
The second episode was better.
Get rid of Martin Short and that whole schtick.
Anyone else wanna pound Mulaney's ass so hard?
He wrote some pretty brilliant Stefon stuff. Respect must be paid.
Anyone else wanna pound Mulaney's ass so hard?
Yes, and I want to keep the shirt he had on last night when I'm done.
His show sucks donkey balls.
He's a writer, not an actor. Will be canceled. Next.
I like both JM and Martin Short. I'd rather watch the manic comedy of the latter.
It really does seem like a direct copy of "Seinfeld." It's even closer than "Diff'rent Strokes" and "Webster" were to each other.
I like him a lot, and I hope the show succeeds. But can the suits from ITCHY AND SCRATCHY cancel Martin Short's quiz show so John can do something else?
The show is getting better. And Mulaney is really attractive.
The guy said it was his second PILOT in 2 years. Not second series. Not second show. He was RIGHT.
Welcome to 3 weeks ago, R61.
Mulaney would have fit quite nicely in the William Higgins's stable of young porn men in the early 80s - slight athletic build, not too muscular, not hairy but unshaved. I can easily picture him in a three way with Tim Richards and Bobby Madison.
According to "TV By the Numbers," "Mulaney" is effectively cancelled.
Mulaney will not only not receive a follow on episode order, its order for 16 episodes was cut back to the already produced 13. It has been canceled.
That's too bad. It seemed to be "slightly" improving the past couple of weeks.
They just never seem to give shows a chance to get on their feet these days. I really believe there are some shows that can evolve and improve immensely.
I guess it's just too expensive and competitive to do that these days.
Oh no, what will Nashim Pershad do now? Can she crawl back to Saturday Night Live? Will Lorne give her her job back? She's only missed 3 episodes.
