At what age can one assume the prized title of 'eldergay'?
25, surely ?
Sad that people think "eldergay" starts at 40.
Sad that most of these bitter, jaded bitches already have bitter, jaded, pinched up gayface and hate everyone and everything at 23. You already LOOK 40 when you scowl at everyone, so who cares?
tedious gayling thread.
Definitely either 40 or 45...
R3 is my favorite eldergay, by the way... You can practically feel his forehead veins spasming.
Learn to love your eldergay status!
You forgot to add 'HISS', R4.
I'm over 40 and find some of the Eldergay lore on here a riot.
Here's the thing: every new generation of gay men thinks they invented "gay." They define what it means to them, the language, the culture. And they're a little defensive about every bit they've claimed for themselves, whether it's gym culture, Judy, Madonna, or Beyonce, or their modes of dating/hooking up, etc. Everything else is inferior, foreign, or wrong.
Completely understandable, as long as we appreciate the accomplishments of all those who've gone before us, who fought much more difficult battles than we can imagine, back when we were criminals. Or sexual predators. Or crazy.
The other stuff doesn't matter in the face of progress. Learn to laugh at it. It IS getting better... for all of us.
I like R9.
Since I'm almost 40 I will have to vote for 50.
I voted 50. I'm 25 myself.. 40 year olds are NOT that old, come on now. The gay guys who voted for this option must be warped. Seriously. There's not much difference in a 30 year old and a 40 year old, and you wouldn't call a gay guy who is 30 an eldergay, so why would you do that with a guy who's 40? no.. I'd say 50 something and older is definitely eldergay.
I'm 43 and I voted 40. I'm an eldergay and fucking proud that I made it here.
Fortysomethings have a very different reference point for AIDS and other cultural phenomena, though. I stand by my original '40' vote, R12.
30 because in gay years it equals 65.
Eldergaydom is more of an attitude than an actual age.
From the moment of your first hiss.
R16 is correct.
[quote]Eldergaydom is more of an attitude than an actual age.
Partly but it's definite sign of eldergaydom when you see a man of a certain age trying to look, dress and act too young.
Also, I wouldn't call eldergaydom a prized title, so much as an inevitable one.
People between 40-45 were raised during the time of HIV, but came of age well after all of the initial deaths. We didn't have friends dying, etc. We heard about it, but didn't experience it. We are the Nirvana generation. We were in college when Nirvana and Dave Matthews and Pearl Jam were speaking to our lost souls. Most of us were too afraid to have gay sex when were young because we were scared of HIV and wrote angsty songs about that and our parents not paying enough attention to us. So we moved to Seattle and wore flannel and didn't wash our hair. Now we're somewhere in the first half of our 40s and pissed off that we missed out on all the fucking that the generations right before us and right after us got to participate in. We take out our frustration by refusing to age gracefully or becoming helicopter parents.
The day after high school graduation.

Not all of us. I've led a very very happy gay life without a drive thru phase.
its totally an attitude not an age.
Once you become completely calcified in your tastes and opinions, you are an eldergay.
Once you mistake the time of your cultural awakening for an actual historical moment of cultural superiority, you are an eldergay.
Once you find everything about the present inferior compared to the rose tinted nostalgia you hold for your own glory days, then you have become an eldergay.
may i never become one.
r20, sorry your twenties were spent sexless and listening to Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Sounds like hell to me.
Spent my 20s having safe sex and listening to C&C Music Factory and Dee-Lite
When your rake stops being just for leaves
At least half of you who are making fun of older men (and women) trying to look younger, are going to do or already doing exactly the same thing. Do you suppose this is something new or that you somehow will be age appropriate, if you are lucky enough to
My approach is to be fit, neat and clean- I already am a conservative dresser so I might escape the scorn of DL- anonymous DL that is. Out in the open in person most of the nasty spirited posters on the elder gay thread would wilt.
I said 45. I am 49. I don't mind being called an 'eldergay' as much as I would mind the other option (not living to be considered an eldergay). Too many of our brothers didn't or don't survive to earn the title. I'll wear it for them until my time comes.
[quote]Once you become completely calcified in your tastes and opinions, you are an eldergay.
There's nothing more sad than the eldergays around here who dig their heels into the dirt and refuse to accept that maybe, just maybe, they are wrong about some things.
Older does not automatically equal wiser.
R3 speaks nothing but the truth...
As soon as your black/butt cherry is popped or age 30. Whichever comes first.
[quote] Older does not automatically equal wiser
Younger doesn't always equal more adventurous, either. I'm older than 30 and surrounded by college students all day, and believe me, these are the most inflexible, calcified people ON EARTH.
I totally and completely agree that absolute "calcification" and inflexibility is a complete bore. But eldergays don't have a corner on that market!
That being said, there are some things that you learn via life lessons and experiences that encourage you to take some paths and stay away from others.
I'm still very open when it comes to art, travel, cinema and music. I love a lot of new music and new ideas. I also appreciate the classics. I don't follow some of the required gay divas (Gaga, Madonna, et al) like sheep but I don't think that makes me a fossilized eldergay. Especially when I'm listening to Roisin Murphy instead!
I say 50 because I have seen some really hot guys in their late 40s. OK, their porn stars, but still, wouldn't call them elder gay.
Someone needs to start another thread:
At what age dose Twink end?
Wish I'd lived in the days of bandannas and pre-plague, Xtopher St. and GVillage when.
Yes, but twink is a specific type, r33. There are many gay young men in the 20s who are handsome, smart and knowledgable and they simply aren't twinks.
Once you hit 40, it's all over
Sorry R35, if every man over age X is an elder gay, then every man under age X is a Twink. That is how labels work.
I am guessing you are a Twink that just and an epiphany about being labeled by your age.
R28, You must be crazy or you must be new here. I am in my early twenties and have had to put up with longwinded hypocritical lesbians on this board from day one. Heaven forbid you disagree with them. Age is not a factor they do it to everyone. They also call you an elder gay (like that is suppossed to be an insult?) Or they call you a freeper and other degrading names. There is simply not something right with their minds.
Good times and bum times I've seen em all, and my dear: I'm STILL HERE!
Yeah, R37, I am will you on that. The younger gays cant take what they dish out.
"oh no, not me I am not a twink, I am handsome, smart and knowledgeable"
Smart by who's standards?? Lets start with education, do you have a PHD? MD? Road Scholar?
I though not.
HaHa, R35 sounds like a typical Twink and he doesn't even see it.
You mean gaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy-ling, R43.
Educated street sweeper
No R42. That guy has a law degree and has been published professionally. So acomplished eldergay.
gayling, twink, twunk, eldergay
Super Oh, Dear, R45!
R45 "Road Scholar" is kind of ironic, since it's the new name of Elderhostel, a service for older people and which is probably the only other word that includes "elder" as a prefix (other than words like "elderberry" that have nothing to do with age.)
Hatchling work too R44. But Twink is more derogatory so I will go with that.
I'm not bothered by the label 'twink'. It's funny that some eldergays would think it so annoying to others... It neither conjures up images of ashen skin and caftans, nor reveals the labelled to be any more stupid than the vitriolic ancients that frequent this place.
What is the name or label for the middle-earth betwixt Twinkhood and Eldergaydom?
On the DataLounge, it seems like Eldergay begins at 20. The kids on here that go on and on about One Direction, Lady Gaga, Bieber, Twilight and Heath Ledger's Joker can't be more than 15 or 16 years old. I'm 28 and these fuckers almost make me feel I should be drinking ensure, taking Geritol and checking myself into a retirement home.
OP, I would've said 68 - 72 but you didn't include it in your poll.
whenever you're 15 years older than the cunt who's calling you an Eldergay.
And does it really matter? It will happen to every gay man that lives past 30.
In the olden days, earrings and caftans probably made their appearances around the same age, but now that younger guys have earrings, I guess the only way to know when you've reached eldergay status is the caftan.
"Oh my God. I'm back. I'm home. All the time, it was... We finally really did it ... You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!"
We are switching to the new platform for The DataLounge this weekend. All of our mobile users have been using it for over a week and all first time users have been using it for about a month - which adds up to well over one million users. So we're ready to end this phase of the testing and move everybody to the new site. (more)
And yes, we've changed the look and some of how it operates.
Yes, we know you just *hate* it in well in advance.
Yes, we know we suck.
Yes, we are the biggest suckers that ever sucked.
But it was time for a change and with the huge shift to mobile it was long overdue. We've taken this opportunity not only to update the look but also make major changes under the hood (or "bonnet" if you're either British or pretentious or both). And we have to prepare for 2016 - a presidential election year where we can normally expect to see a 60% jump in traffic (yes, we've seen 5 presidential elections so far…Christ we're old).
The site has a bunch - nay, plethora - of new features which will make the site more usable: better search, the ability to ignore posters and threads, see link previews, to pick up a thread where you left off, spam and malware filtering and more.
If you want you can go explore and see for yourself, Click here.
And while running the tests we've noticed two interesting reactions to the new system - people are spending more time on the site and more people that come stay around longer and look at more stuff. Both good things. Yay!
Possibly we've not slain all the dragons and there will be issues that come up during the switchover. There's a help button in the lower right hand corner of the page which you can use to send us bug reports.
Please include as much information about the hardware (PC, Mac, Tablet, Phone etc), operating system (Windows, Mac OS, Android, iOS etc) and browser (Chrome, Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer etc) that you are using as possible to help us replicate and fix the problem.
Please note that complaints about colors, fonts, icons and the like are not "bugs" - they are design choices that we've made and we expect one or two cases of world-class bitching. But they won't actually cause headaches, scurvy, heart attacks, Restless Leg Syndrome, Morgellon's Disease or the vapors (but have your smelling salts at hand just in case).
Talking to DataLounge servers. Please wait a moment...
