Cary Grant Biography

I'm reading a bio on him titled The lonley Heart. I'm only on page 101 but i'm confused about a couple of things. It mentions how he would hit/beat his wife Virginia Cherrill. Then the next day wouldn't remember doing it. I had never heard this before. That is a severe accusation. It also paints him as a selfish jerk. Didn't know these things. I always thought he was pretty decent guy.
