The Lucy Show

I'm watching an old THE LUCY SHOW episode. In it, Lucy somehow ends up being a show girl in a Danny Thomas musical number. She can't keep up with the pro dancers and keeps bumping into Thomas. Hilarity ensues. It's in color and looks beautiful and Lucy looks great. But I could never really get into the post-I LOVE LUCY shows for one simple reason. There was no payoff to Lucy's shenanigan's because there was no fallout with Ricky. Sure, Mr. Mooney would yell at her, but the stakes were with Ricky. I wonder how the shows were received at the time.

• I think at the time ppl were so glad to something with Lucy on tv. We adored her so,we didn't pay much attention to the show (at least I didn't) I disliked all of Lucy's shows w/o Desi. Terrible stuff really!

• I was watching this morning too. The first 3 seasons when Vivian Vance was still around....they were a little better. I like all 3 of her series, but I Love Lucy was in a different league than the other two. Sometimes episodes of TLS or HL...end abruptly, no resolution at all. R2...why did you even click on the thread if you're not interested? go away

And if a thread is too "old" for you, why bother posting? What are you attempting to GET from your insipid posts? Move on.

• My theory on Lucy: She was an excellent sophisticated comedienne in the movies, and when she went into television, she was able to combine the sophisticated humor with the clowning brilliantly. As time went on, all you heard was about how she was a great clown, and by the time of The Lucy Show, she lost most of the subtlety that played against the broadness. Thanks to Desi, who helped out on the new series in the first two seasons, She had her moments, but once he was gone, it just got worse and worse. • Lucille Ball was OK in her own way I guess, but I never got alot out of Lucy Show stuff, usually we watched Laugh In when it was slotted against her show--recall Artie Johnson as the German soldier always saying "goodnight, Lucy". Still get a few chuckles out of "I Love Lucy" when it is shown as an old rerun somewhere, but since I was born in 1954 I am too young to recall it when the show was originally on the air.

• The problem with Lucy is that she had no sense of humor. She could play whatever was written on the page for her, but she could never tell if material was actually funny. When Desi left after the first season on TLS, the show became more OTT (while ILL was too, if you watch, you see each "situation," starts from something real or normal...Lucy wanting to hide her dress from Ricky, her being mad at Ricky, etc.) After he left Lucy would still send him scripts and he would say, "This doesnt make sense, just WHY would the girls want to fly a helicopter?" After her original writers left it became worse. Add to this, Lucy was running Desilu so she didnt have time to rehearse or even read the script, so everyone stood around while she read a cue card and SCREAMED!

• R5 You're right. I remember watching the first ten minutes and cringing. It was horrible and I felt bad about it (I know....I know!)

• Lucy was afraid of aging. First of all this episode was a copy of the I Love Lucy episode. Second when Danny Thomas calls Lucy, "young lady" you just about want to throw up. Third, Lucy is competing against 20 year olds and WINNING? Lucy was never realistic but that is absurd. Fourth, Lucy never bathed properly.

• I loved "I Love Lucy", but I absolutely hated "Here's Lucy" and "The Lucy Show".

• I always felt that Lucy was missing something. She really wasn't funny without D. She looked like what she was, an older woman who just went through hell and lost the true love of her life. She was worn out. He voice was truley worn as was her face. She really wasn't good at covering up her true feelings.

• The Lucy Show stunk up the place during its original run. Just ghastly, and no sane person should pretend otherwise. And I'm old.

See, what these younger Dataloungers don't realize is that one day, sooner than they might think, they will be on here still going on and on and on about the virtues of Justin Bieber, Harry Styles, The Kardashians, Snookie, Transformers movies, Psy, Honey Boo-Boo, Beyonce, Real Hollywood Housewives, Taylor Swift and Lautner, Clay Aiken, Nikki Manaj, and "Glee" and the young people of tomorrow (who won't be born for another 20-30 years) will be flaming them and wishing death on them, like they do to us. • Not all young people are dicks, Mr. R4. I am 20 and I love older gays and have learned much from the ones I know personally, and even a few on DataLounge. I love film noir movies from the 40s and 50s, I love older shows like I Love Lucy and The Honeymooners. I love 50s music like Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Fats Domino, Jackie Wilson. My favorite actors of all time are Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn,Peter Lorre, John Wayne. My grandad, who was my hero, taught me to love all of these great things. I loved him and I love gay men of ALL ages.

• I Love Lucy was made way before I was born, but I still found repeats funny growing up. Only thing in B/W I ever watch. Universal humor is timeless.
