God, it's so fucking rude, and annoying. No one can complete a thought. He asks a question, and before they give their first sentence, he's already talking over them, and most times to the other person in the room. Dumbfuck.
He thinks with his mouth.
EVERYONE and ANYONE who has EVER watched a single show with him agrees with you!
Same reason Oprah does it...
Because he can.
Though I love him for being a liberal, he's an asshole in terms of his on-screen demeanor.
He's okay, he's in the mode, playing the part.
Those who hate Chris Matthews' style have never watched the McLaughlin Group. It's the classic political banter show. Chris just knows his stuff. Of all the MSNBC hosts, he's the ultimate insider. He speaks the language of the Beltway and you can gleam what it's like to be in the political circle from Chris says. He speaks from the heart and there's no script. It's just how he feels about so-and-so.
I did not like him in 2008 because I thought he was sexist. His treatment of HRC was sexist and atrocious but I believe he has learned the errors of his way.
[quote]Liberal blogger Glenn Greenwald has called Matthews "the most vivid example of all that is wrong with political coverage," saying "[H]e’s endlessly obsessed with personality-based politics and likes to promote the strong, masculine tough guy who you can have a beer with, versus the nerdy loser. And he has a cast of characters who go on his show, like Newsweek’s Howard Fineman, who gush over the maleness of the Republican candidates and warn Democrats about how that has real appeal to American voters. Most political reporters judge candidates on the basis of the likeability factor—-Matthews is just more explicit about it."
R8 i agree. mclaughlin group? talk about keeping up appearances. chris just tells it like it is.
But R8, Matthews has been sucking Hillary's ass ever since. It's not sincere, but who cares.
"She only got that senate seat because her husband fooled around."
Chris Matthews, 2007
Because Chris Matthews is a worthless fucking douche. Sooo glad that shit has lousy ratings.
I like Chris Matthews, but he always has to over-explain everything.
Chris, we get it--and we know. You don't have to tell us every last qualifyer, modifier and inside political detail. If we're watching you, we're political animals too. We know what you mean.
Chris Matthews doesn't just talk over people. He can barely talk. He's got a mush mouth and swallows his consenants.
I can no longer stand to watch or to listen to him since he criticized someone for their "NJ accent." He should take a good listen to his own speech!
NJ accent?! Chris Matthews has the heaviest Philly accent I've ever heard in my life! How dare he? He sounds like he stuffs his face with cheesesteaks all day long!
The most detestable thing of all about Chris Matthews is that he is a Warren Commission supporter. Unbelievable. Actually tries to convince viewers every November 22 that Oswald acted alone.
[quote]Chris Matthews has the heaviest Philly accent I've ever heard in my life
You're obviously unfamiliar with Philly.
He is a good man, he admits his errors and apologizes. I respect him, although not always agree, I understand him. He's damn smart, too.
Is he a closet case? He was absolutely queer over JFK and Obama. He called Obama "Barack" all thought 2008.
He's a cartoon character, no different than Reverend Al. The spittle and cackles are all part of the (mostly entertaining) schtick.
In 2008, Chris leg got tingly at the thought of Obama. (one of the dumbest things I've ever heard a political commentator say.)
He's the poster boy for ADHD
R17 I'm very familiar with Philly and have family there. In the national media, he's got the heaviest local/regional accent I've ever heard by far. Even native, ethnic New Yorkers take elocution lessons to sound less ethnic and New Yorky when they newsread on NYC area television!
Chris' show junped the shark in the early 2000's. He used to be soooooooooo much better.
Right after 9.11.2001 he lost it.
Are you talking over me? Case dismissed!
R8 --- he is, indeed, the consummate Beltway insider, which is why it is SO incredibly painful to watch him pretend he "understands the 'regular' guy"!
All that and he's obsessed with Notre Dame. And he got all misty eyed over the previous pope, when he visited.
r26 what is a regular guy? The guy who thinks Super Bowl should be a national holiday? or is the ones who knows more about Kim Kardashian and her whorish ways than who is Vice President?
Those regular guys? If you're watching Chris Matthews during the daytime, more likely than not, you're not a regular guy. You are political junkie. Matthews speak to popular junkies and he doesn't pretend to know the regular guy be the regular guy would rather watch porn than than tune into his show.
I like Chris Matthews. I like how much he appreciates other people and tells them. He's goofy and over the top sometimes but he generally means well. He also gives idiots the direct business, which too few of the others do. Hardball & TRMS are my favorite programs on MSNBC. I also love the kindler, gentler Chris Matthews syndicated weekend show.
[quote]I like Chris Matthews.
And how do you like his disgusting defense of the lies of the Warren Commission?
It's an Irish thing. Look at all the Irish commentators, like Matthews, O'Reilly, Hannity--they're loud, crass and never know when to shut up. It's one of the reasons why the Irish were considered low-class for generations.
You are a bizarre person r30. Truly bizarre.
I like Chris, he really does seem like a genuine good guy with good intentions, but I agree with the OP about the talking over people - he'll ask a question and let his guest get about two syllables out before he starts talking again. It must be the most frustrating experience ever to be on there. I have a friend who's just like that and I can't even talk to him anymore, it's exhausting. And I do love that Chris is humble enough to apologize when he says something he realizes was offensive, but he's ALWAYS having to apologize because he's always just blurting things out.I swear a week doesn't go by where I don't hear him apologize for something.
Back in 2008, he mocked Obama mercilessly for ordering ORANGE JUICE in a diner, something one of his "regular guys" would NEVER do! In other words, Mr.Beltway sees himself as an oracle of current blue collar thought for his edumacated viewership.
I always think of white trash ordering OJ.
I cannot watch him because he NEVER lets a guest finish a thought. So damned annoying., Ed Lawrence is much better.
Why, R32? Because I object to Chris Matthews being a shill for the military-inudstiral complex that assassinated JFK?
I don't buy that.
Once a guest insulted another guest Joan Walsh, implying she was a lesbian and the camera cut to Chris Matthews and he was smirking. I've hated him ever since.
[quote] Ed Lawrence is much better.
Who is Ed Lawrence? Ed Schultz? Lawrence O'Donnell?
Stop hijacking the thread with crackpot theories R37. Jesus, you do this in every thread even remotely having to do with Chris Matthews, the CIA or JFK. Even the thread about Argo!
I like Chris and I like his show. I like Ed the least.
I can't help but like him. He is old school and just loves the political game, of which personality is a big part. He is entertainment and really appreciates good journalism, even though he really isn't one.
He's one of the worst on cable. I can't watch him for more than a minute or two.
I you were new to politics and just watched his show, you would think that Pres. Kennedy was responsible for the progressive legislation passed in the 1960s, not Pres. Johnson. I know it's an Irish thing, but that is no excuse.
So if he's wrong on that, how many other things (less well known) is he wrong about because he just happens to like one men or women, better. Ms. Clinton in 2008 vs 2013 applies here as well.
You're an asshole, R41. And you obviously are ignorant about the history of your own country over the past 50 years.
Get informed, loser.
I loved Chris taking down Reince Preibus on Morning Joe during the Republican convention. It was a thing of beauty.
R46, you embarrass yourself.
"I did not like him in 2008 because I thought he was sexist. His treatment of HRC was sexist and atrocious but I believe he has learned the errors of his way."
I completely agree! I have hated him ever since...
Oh and he's from Jersey, not Philly....
Chris does that to keep the show interesting and to keep the show moving.
He always talks over the editor of Mother Jones who is sometimes a slow talker and not succinct - Chris has no patience for him.
Some journalists are excellent in print, but cannot talk in a succinct, interesting, or insightful way on political talk shows - such as Eugene Robinson who never has anything insightful to say on Chris Matthews' show.
[quote]Oh and he's from Jersey, not Philly....
No, he's from Philly.
Chris Matthews loves David Corn. He has him on the show all the time.
Chris loves David Corn only because David Corn is a liberal and he found the damaging tape of Mitt Romeny talking down 47 percent of the U.S. as lazy and dependent.
David Corn obviously has a contract with MSNBC to appear regularly.
But Chris has absolutely no patience with the way David Corn stumbles inarticulately with his slow unsuccinct talking
- so Chris constantly cuts off Corn, talks over him, and almost never lets him have his say.
Chris likes Joan Walsh, Howard Fineman, and Joy Reid.
To summarize, this thread is about 49% people who were okay with Obama getting the nomination in '08; 50% still-bitter Hillbots; and 1 JFK obsessive.
[quote] Chris likes Joan Walsh, Howard Fineman, and Joy Reid.
As much as I like MSNBC, it gets tiresome hearing the same 4 or 5 commentators every day on every show. It's always Howard Fineman, Eugene Robinson, David Corn, Joan Walsh, and Joy Reid. And you always know exactly what they're going to say. Aren't there any other liberal voices in DC (or outside DC) who have opinions on politics?
Persistent rumor about Chris Matthews is that he's an alcoholic.
He damn sure was drunk on air that one time.
I really enjoy Howard Fineman because on the contrary, R55, I think he always has interesting angles and great insights which are not run of the mill.
R56, Chris is diabetic. One cannot be an alcoholic when diabetic. Alcohol and diabetes do not mix. It would put one in a coma or passed out or very sick.
Because he's a fat gas bag!
r55 I have the exact same complaint. As much as I love the Rachel Maddow Show (it's really the only primetime show I watch on MSNBC), she has the same rotation of guests every single week. Chris Hayes usually on Fridays, Steve Kornacki, Dan Rather; and Andrea Mitchell to comment on the breaking news of the day. I like all those guests, but I would love a rotation of different faces. Need more female guests beyond the subject of contraceptives and abortion.
I've thought about emailing her people about it. Official show website states that they read every single email.
Chris has had David Corn on for years, not just because of the 47% tape. He has also given credit to LBJ for progressive policy and is just shamelessly shilling his book on JFK.
Wednesday's ratings show that Chris Matthews' 5:00 airing of Hardball is MSNBC's highest-rated show of the night, and by a fairly significant margin:
Piers Morgan should not be interviewing people at all. He's the worst at this.
R61: I was watching Matthews' show when the news was announced that Lady Bird Johnson has just died. His guest, a Republican from Nevada, talked for about 5 minutes about what a bastard LBJ was. Matthews could have at least mentioned that Lady Bird was one of the first to speak out for the environment.
Instead Chris Matthews said nothing.
Does anyone watch him? I don't know how he keeps on the air. MSNBC must be real desperate.
[quote] Does anyone watch him? I don't know how he keeps on the air.
R65, please refer to R62.
Why does Manti Te'o have imaginary girlfriends? Because he can.
Chris Matthews is an egoist. The other day, he gave Joy Reid his ultimate compliment: "It's like we have the same mind!" Reid was gracious with the "compliment," but it showed Matthews' true nature in that he believes he is always the smartest person in the room. I much prefer Rachel Maddow's approach via which she (and we) learn from the guests rather than shout over them.
All it will take is some people to shout, "Stop interrupting, Chris," during a live broadcast. Nobody has the guts to tell him to shut up.
I watch him until the first time he interrupts. I never make it 10 minutes in. It is worse than obnoxious.
Chris Hayes does this too. Not to the extent that Mathews does it, but still, it's annoying. He asks a question and then jumps in and answers it before the quest gets two words in.
Chris has NOTHING on me.
So we are actually allowed to criticize Matthews without getting the freezer accusation thrown at us? Well, thank goodness.
He's just a total blowhard. His agenda may not be despicable like the Fox blowhard equivalents; nonetheless he is wrong about a lot of things, his style is just impossible for me to take, and his views allow for absolutely no nuance whatsoever.
Can't stomach him.
He doesn't "talk over people."
Chris Matthews MUMBLES over people!
Back to Freezer Republic with you, R73. Shoo!
I sort of like Ed Shultz, The Rev and Matthews. But I can only take a 3 hour block of their hectoring if I mix a couple of good, stiff drinks.
[quote]He always talks over the editor of Mother Jones who is sometimes a slow talker and not succinct - Chris has no patience for him.
An intelligent person would not have a guest like this. Why bring on someone who isn't allowed to finish a thought? It adds nothing to the discussion.
i find it's like an ice cream brain freeze!!! one minute you're listening to matthews' question, the next you're trying to concentrate on the answer, when ALL OF A SUDDEN, there's this incredibly shrewish, slobbery, childish voice coming from nowhere, an immature voice that smacks of no self control and actually hurts the brain when having to transition between what he's asked and the lack of any kind of resolution. I've commented many times, but since it is still going on, I guess the powers that be haven't bothered to fix it. I find I usually have to change the channel once I've yelled at the tv enough to let someone answer. Worst choice for election results program!
With his speech -- swallowing consonants and mumbling -- why does he bother speaking at all!
Get rid of him!
Matthews is rude, crude, and obnoxious.
I like Chris Mathews, but this is a typical dialogue:
Chris: I think this person is the slimiest, most corrupt, stupid, racist, hateful, dangerous SOB in existance, but your thoughts?
How can a guest on his show actually respond in a frank manner, the way Chris sets-up the interview?
Guest: well I was going to say I voted for him and have a secret crush on him, but when you put it that way, you're right, he is an abomination.
I haven't watched him since he was rude and nasty to Barbara Buono, because he had a hard on for the criminal, Christie.
R9, there is something terribly wrong with Glen Greenwald, so I wouldn't trust his judgement of Chris M.
There could be drinking games involving the number of times that spittle-covered douche uses the word "ethnics."
"Oh my God. I'm back. I'm home. All the time, it was... We finally really did it ... You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!"
We are switching to the new platform for The DataLounge this weekend. All of our mobile users have been using it for over a week and all first time users have been using it for about a month - which adds up to well over one million users. So we're ready to end this phase of the testing and move everybody to the new site. (more)
And yes, we've changed the look and some of how it operates.
Yes, we know you just *hate* it in well in advance.
Yes, we know we suck.
Yes, we are the biggest suckers that ever sucked.
But it was time for a change and with the huge shift to mobile it was long overdue. We've taken this opportunity not only to update the look but also make major changes under the hood (or "bonnet" if you're either British or pretentious or both). And we have to prepare for 2016 - a presidential election year where we can normally expect to see a 60% jump in traffic (yes, we've seen 5 presidential elections so far…Christ we're old).
The site has a bunch - nay, plethora - of new features which will make the site more usable: better search, the ability to ignore posters and threads, see link previews, to pick up a thread where you left off, spam and malware filtering and more.
If you want you can go explore and see for yourself, Click here.
And while running the tests we've noticed two interesting reactions to the new system - people are spending more time on the site and more people that come stay around longer and look at more stuff. Both good things. Yay!
Possibly we've not slain all the dragons and there will be issues that come up during the switchover. There's a help button in the lower right hand corner of the page which you can use to send us bug reports.
Please include as much information about the hardware (PC, Mac, Tablet, Phone etc), operating system (Windows, Mac OS, Android, iOS etc) and browser (Chrome, Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer etc) that you are using as possible to help us replicate and fix the problem.
Please note that complaints about colors, fonts, icons and the like are not "bugs" - they are design choices that we've made and we expect one or two cases of world-class bitching. But they won't actually cause headaches, scurvy, heart attacks, Restless Leg Syndrome, Morgellon's Disease or the vapors (but have your smelling salts at hand just in case).
Talking to DataLounge servers. Please wait a moment...
