'LOL' Or 'lol' At The End Of Sentences
It's vile. Just say what you have to say without the need to add that softening device at the end.
Twentysomething- I agree. It reveals the writer to be an unlettered buffoon.
- Vile? That's a pretty strong adjective to apply to a shorthand term for something that makes you laugh.
LOLZers
- heeheehee
- How else do you let someone know you're not being serious? :P?
- Texting has a language of its own. It is important to let someone know you got their joke or to indicate that you are joking. What would you suggest? An emoticon?
- It's spreading here at the DL. You can now witness sentences like this one:
"They found the body behind the dumpster.. The underpants were covering the mouth lol."
- lmfao! op, gl w ur thread. ttyl.
- r5, sometimes people add it to things that are just not funny. I have a friend who is well educated and articulate in real life, but when he chats with me on Facebook, he says "lol" at the end of every other sentence. He will ask me what I'm doing, and I'll say, "Making a pot roast with vegetables". He'll say, "Sounds delicious lol!"
- It's quick and effective. I'll keep using it.
- I have to agree with R8. (R6's example is also great.) It serves no purpose anymore, now that everyone is tagging it to the end of every single possible sentence.
- Another fine gem, this time from a Columbia grad:
"I told him that I needed the permit tomorrow. He argued about it lol"
What purpose does the 'lol' serve there? Did the argument make you laugh? Am I supposed to laugh at your situation? Are you afraid that I'll take your plight too seriously? Add another few words, and make that context clear.
- "El-oh-El, Larry, el-oh-el."
- Jesus, r11, get a grip. She obviously used it to impart the fact that she wasn't that angry about the situation or wasn't taking it too seriously. Most people use it to give their statement some context. You guys complaining about this seem very crotchety. You must be a joy to live with. POB!
- Deal with it gramps!
- r8, he's being sarcastic a nod making fun of your elderly ass.
- That wasn't at all what he meant, R13, as I discovered later in the conversation. He was actually very angry, but didn't want to come off that way. He has "a reputation to maintain".
"Most people use it to give their statement some context."
Yeah, not quite, dear. Most people use it for whatever they feel like at the moment; it's more of a nervous tic than a semantic tool.
- Whatever
It's all good

- I think it's fairly clear that the literate people are not the ones championing the indiscriminate use of 'LOL'...
- The only time I use "lol" is in reaction to what another person has posted or texted; never in reaction to what I've brought forth.
Della
- "It's all good" is a terrible expression. It sounds like "I don't care" or "whatever," but people seem to use it more freely, thinking it doesn't sound as harsh. It does to me.
- Hisssss!
The Hissing Eldergay (THE)
- Really, r15? Other examples:
I'm just hanging out lol
Watching TV lol
About to go to bed lol
Have a good day lol!
r8
- I hate it. I hate it with all my might.
- Who the fuck cares? I'm tired of controlling assholes who can't handle people doing what they wouldn't do. You don't like it? Don't do it. Geez.
- R24--Are you upset that words having definitions that "control" their meanings? Language is controlled or it becomes useless.
We do have opinions about language here. If you don't like that, stay out of threads about language.
- I agree, LOL belongs at the beginning
- It could be worse.
An eldergay friend of mine thought that 'lol' meant 'lots of love.' He was mortified when I told him what it really meant...
He had just posted on the FB page of a friend whose mother had just passed away:
"So sorry for your loss. LOL"
- LOL at r27.
- Second lol for R27.
- I snigger at people who use LOL.
Yes, snigger I do!
- Ciaran feels cool about DRTL. Naturally.
- You aren't the boss of us, OP. LAY

- For the first time, I could write LOL and mean it. I did laugh at loud at R27.
R23
- "Ha!" is much better.
LOL is stupid.
- R32 remembers the way Ken LAY's cock felt in his mouth...

- A lot of the time it's used cynically or disingeuously to deflect from a comment that is deliberately spiteful or insulting.
- The "eldergay" shit is unfortunate, largely because it's being used as a bully tool by nitwits of limited education to stifle understandable reactions to their LOL dullness and ignorance. It is implicitly homophobic.
- [quote]thinking it doesn't sound as harsh. It does to me.
My response is often, WELL, it Obviously IS, asshat!
- I'm fine with them using the LOL but shouldn't there be a period before the LOL?
- R37 = Bitter eldergay
- The only time I've used TL;DR on here (or anywhere, to my recollection) was in reply to an eejit who posted s long-winded rant about someone else's post and ended his with TL;DR. I don't remember which thread it was on.
Ciaran
- Uh, we're talking about LOL, not TL;DR. Do try to keep up, dear.
- I am aware of that darling, but I was replying to R31. Of course, he got it wrong, but I figured out to what he was referring.
Ciaran
- You're a dick, OP. LOL
- [quote]The "eldergay" shit is unfortunate, largely because it's being used as a bully tool by nitwits of limited education to stifle understandable reactions to their LOL dullness and ignorance. It is implicitly homophobic.
So, what you are saying is "eldergay wounds"?
- That was boring, R44.
- My Sibs and I have been cackling over R27 since yesterday.
