r5, sometimes people add it to things that are just not funny. I have a friend who is well educated and articulate in real life, but when he chats with me on Facebook, he says "lol" at the end of every other sentence. He will ask me what I'm doing, and I'll say, "Making a pot roast with vegetables". He'll say, "Sounds delicious lol!"
It's quick and effective. I'll keep using it.
I have to agree with R8. (R6's example is also great.) It serves no purpose anymore, now that everyone is tagging it to the end of every single possible sentence.
Another fine gem, this time from a Columbia grad: "I told him that I needed the permit tomorrow. He argued about it lol" What purpose does the 'lol' serve there? Did the argument make you laugh? Am I supposed to laugh at your situation? Are you afraid that I'll take your plight too seriously? Add another few words, and make that context clear.

That wasn't at all what he meant, R13, as I discovered later in the conversation. He was actually very angry, but didn't want to come off that way. He has "a reputation to maintain". "Most people use it to give their statement some context." Yeah, not quite, dear. Most people use it for whatever they feel like at the moment; it's more of a nervous tic than a semantic tool.

I think it's fairly clear that the literate people are not the ones championing the indiscriminate use of 'LOL'...
The only time I use "lol" is in reaction to what another person has posted or texted; never in reaction to what I've brought forth.

"It's all good" is a terrible expression. It sounds like "I don't care" or "whatever," but people seem to use it more freely, thinking it doesn't sound as harsh. It does to me.
