- R1 means that if you're not black, then you likely don't understand black hair. It is much more temperamental and high-maintenance than many people of other races may think.

- They have to sleep with silk stockings on their head, and once they get their hair done it can't be washed until their next visit to the hairdresser. That could be a week, or two weeks. In between? Flakes, dents in the sides, and new growth on the neck.
If I were a black women, I'd wear a very short natural cut, this way I could wash it more often.

- It's not a wig, it's a weave...duh. I think she looks beautiful, but some friends and I concluded that it makes her look a little too youthful. It's laughable to think that the First Lady should have to stick to one hairstyle for 8 years, so the bangs are at least a nice way to shake things up.

- R45, a wig would be just that-- a full wig. A weave means that hair has been sewn or glued into her own to make it look fuller. I don't think it's a full weave (the hair is cornrowed and hair is sewn into the cornrows), but a partial weave.
- That is one ugly hairdo. It makes her look 60. She cannot pull off that Janet Jackson "Diff'rent Strokes" look. Little black girls get that hairstyle. It's the black equivalent of the bowl cut.

So, I think you are correct - with the new bangs, she is sometimes wearing a wig and sometimes wearing a weave.
(I don't think you are talking about her previous hair without bangs, are you? She got a couple of bad haircuts in the past 6 months or year (before the bangs) - bad cuts that did not flow well at all and looked unfortunate)

- In the Yahoo photo which the OP posted, you can see that the hair on the sides is fake hair because of its texture and color.
That Yahoo photo was just taken last night.
Today, she is not wearing the shaggy on the sides wig/weave shown in the Yahoo photo, but is probably wearing a different wig/weave today.
- I see lots of celebrities (of all shades) with weaves and extensions. It's becoming more commonplace.
- Funny how there aren't any derogatory comments on Queen Hillary's extensions.
- If black ladies already have weak hair from processing, why would Michelle get a weave instead of just wearing a wig? Weaves put further stress on the hair, but if she just threw on a wig, she could give her natural hair time to grow and repair itself.
- Not all black women have negative effects from relaxing their hair for a long period of time. Oprah has gotten relaxers for years, and her hair is thick, full and luxurious.
Another example is Janet Jackson. She has worn weaves and extensions and had her hair dyed for years. The other day, this pic of her at LAX came out, and as you can see, her hair is thick and full. She'd been recently seen wearing braids, and you can tell she had them taken out and decided to let her hair flow freely.

Michelle is definitely wearing a wig or weave in that Yahoo photo.
It looks synthetic even if it isn't synthetic.
And it's a darker color and her own hair wouldn't be as thick as the photo shows nor would it take to the shaggy cut at the bottom if it were her own hair.
