Feeling the need to buy people things to sustain a friendship

Whenever I make a new friend, I always feel the need to buy them stuff and am constantly worried if I do something wrong that they won't like me anymore. I don't know how to get rid of this overwhelming feeling that people will leave me once they get to know me.
