Friendships built on flattery and obsequiousness

Has anyone noticed that friendships like this never last? I was witnessing a guy do this with another guy. He constantly complimented him and that's what he did the whole time they were together, one compliment after another. Then one day that guy said something that wasn't really a compliment and suddenly the friendship broke. What are your sentiments on friendships like these?

• They aren't real friendships!

• Friendships based on upholding one anothers' false self, aren't. It's so easy to fall off of that pedestal. In my experience, fawning types also are overly sensitive - really leaning in to heard an insult where there is none.

• I could actually use a "friend" like that right now. I have too many "honest" friends, and my self-esteem has taken a beating. I could use some flirting and flattery.

• Isn't this what all celebrities' and socialites' friendships turn into, even if they started out on genuine terms?

• I like R4's post. So concise and to the point. He's somebody who has a way with words, to be sure.

• I did this once with someone I really liked and felt sorry. Turned out this person I was flattering to boost their ego turned around and acted like they were better than me. The relationship cooled when I wouldn't cotton to that insanity.
