My poor little Persian kitty was killed by two dogs yesterday

I am watching the dogs for a friend since I have a fenced in back yard. My cats hang out on my upper deck which is about 14' off the ground. I think he must have been sitting on the rail and fallen below after losing his balance or just wasn't paying attention. I feel really guilty now. Poor baby. I have to find a box for him.

• Thanks R4. What's worse is the "friend" has disappeared and not dropped food off or come by to walk them like he had been doing. I am about to the point where if he doesn't surface I am contacting a pet adoption agency to take them. A no kill one of course. They are basically nice dogs but predatory (Siberian Husky). I like them but they just don't mix well with other animals.

• OP, I'm sorry for your loss but your story has too many holes in it. Did you see what happened or are you just guessing? You haven't mentioned whether or not you tried and how you've tried to contact your 'friend'. How long were you watching the dogs, were they acclimated to each other (dogs on good terms with the cats)? What made you think that the cats would stay on the deck knowing that they could have been distracted by another cat /bird or any number of things that would cause them to leave the deck area?

But oh, I'm sure you couldn't wait to post this story on DL. There seems to be a lot of posts from people "accidentally" killing pets. Makes me wonder how many people with the potential to murder post here.

• OP, why did you agree to take in two dogs with high prey drives? I love dogs too and would help out a friend in need, but my cats would have priority. I would never take in a dog that I wasn't 100% sure to be cat-friendly. Just like I would not take in a cat that didn't get along with other cats.

• Well, I'm especially sympathetic to your tale. Regardless how people castigate you, or whether people even believe you, we all make mistakes in life, and I can see myself thinking my kitty could hold her own amidst predators during the day (I live in an area where there are wild animals who prey on cute kitties, so you keep them protected at night).

I let kitty out yesterday and he never came back in for his dinner. Unusual but I didn't really worry. Sometimes he visits the next door neighbors. The dogs have been here about 1 1/2 months. Friend hit a bad patch and is living with other people and couldn't keep his dogs so I offered my yard. They are nice dogs but not good with other animals. The cats knew they were in the back yard immediately. They aren't dumb. They never really went down there anyway and preferred the higher deck. For some reason this morning when he still had not appeared I got a bad feeling and looked over the deck and there he was with a dog lying near him. I'm guessing he was on the rail, which was common, and he lost his balance. There is no way he would have voluntarily gone into the backyard. I've been attempting to contact this friend but it's been unsuccessful so far. Like I said, I may call an animal adoption shelter.

• I picture the poor little thing falling feet first into the mouth of a waiting Rotty, legs rodlike-straight like and every hair standing on end as Mew-Mew tries to defy gravity. It's a terrible image. So cruel to us DL readers. And a clawed soft palate as the price for a little morsel. Cruelty to the poor dog, too. Plus the kitty probably was full of poop so the dog's breath after eating the cat probably was horrible, which was terrible, since the dog likely was panting in glee for two hours after its basic instincts.
