Women being nasty is different than men being nasty.
Here's an example.
Amy's line about Bigelow knowing about torture because she was married to James Cameron for years. It was hilarious and she delivered it brilliantly.
However, if Gervais had said - in admittedly hypothetical similar circumstances - that James Cameron knew about torture because he had been married to Kathryn Bigelow for so many years, it would not have gone over. Perhaps that's because James Cameron is a piece of work and Bigelow is not. But even if the opposite were true, it would not have gone over. Hell, the audience at home doesn't know if Cameron is a piece of work and Bigelow is not, and I'm sure few thought it was objectionable.
I'm not saying it was objectionable. I'm just noting the double standard. Which certainly exists.
Best comment was the last one of the night:
"We're going home with Jodie!"
They are cuties. What were they drinking?
They were great. Not nasty like Ricky. He was just annoying.
They were clever and funny.
Yes, R1. And there were two of them, and they've fully immersed their inner cunts within acceptable personae that have little to do with their personalities, but which audiences understand and seem to like.
ALWAYS AND FOREVER: It's okay to bash men, It's not okay to bash women. Except at the DL.
In that spirit: They were cunts but I laughed.
what if Gervais had trashed Cameron with the same joke?
I remember when Tracey Morgan said on SNL: "Black is the new President, Bitch!" Amy had to force herself to smile, it seemed.
I completely disagree, r1. Let's say Guy Ritchie made a movie about torture and Gervais made a similar crack about Madonna. No one would have a problem with it. It's definitely considered OK to bash women who are believed to be "pieces of work" - whether they actually are or not.
I thought the opening monologue (or whatever you call it when two do it) was kind of goofy with them asking Daniel Day Lewis to do the finger from ET or connecting Les Miserables with Mandy Patinkin. The digs at Hathaway (mentioning her hosting gig with James Franco as a punchline) and Cameron were fun though.
