Andrew Rannells a Purebred Gay Man
Elijah, Andrew Rannells’s character in Girls, may be intensely, uh, attracted to a woman in the show’s season premiere, which shows him wondering if he might be bisexual rather than gay, but the gay actor is unquestioning about his real-life sexuality.
“I personally have never had sex with a woman,” Rannells, who also stars in The New Normal, told New York magazine’s entertainment blog Vulture. “I’m more of what you call gold-star gay. I’m purebred.”
Rannells says he’s among the minority of gay men, as most of them have had sex with a woman at some point — some even after they’ve concluded that yep, they’re gay. “I have a lot of friends who, actually, after they’ve realized they're gay, they feel empowered in a way that they do some things that they didn’t think they would do, like explore some things because they’re a little more comfortable with who they are,” he told the blog.
The season 2 premiere of Girls airs at Sunday at 9 p.m. Eastern on HBO.

- "Rannells says he’s among the minority of gay men, as most of them have had sex with a woman at some point"
I don't think that's true at all. Maybe with the eldergays, when societal pressures for sexual conformity were stronger... I'm a 'gold star' gay, though, and most of my coeval friends are as well.

- r1, you're a rarity.
Twentysomethingmyself
- "Gold star" label is supposed to refer to "pure" lesbians not gay men. Also, I don't buy that most men have had sex with a woman.
But good for him for being proud and not trying to hint at some bisexuality for his career.
- I'm shocked, I tell you, SHOCKED that Mr. Rannells has never had sex with a woman.
- I like that he thinks he would have an opportunity to.
- Given how fluid sexuality is nowdays the younger generation is less afraid to experiment and what's more important less afraid to come to an accepting conclusion based on their sexual experiments.
A lot of older gay people resent women (or the women in their lives) because society forced them to marry and have sex with them. Nowdays the pressure is pretty much off to marry and have kids.
- I don't think so, R2. I'm also in my twenties, and in my group of a dozen or so friends, only two have had sex with women. Both moved to the city after having grown up in small country towns.
- Post the data that proves that 'gold star' gays are a minority, R2. Even anecdotal experience will tell you that that's not the case.
R1
- [quote]Also, I don't buy that most men have had sex with a woman.
Hundreds of millions of heterosexual men would disagree.
- Out actors really need to shut up when it comes to stuff like this. It makes them look ridiculous.
- Andrew and a woman both laying on their backs, legs up in the air, would tend to make actual sex difficult so I can see his point.
- [quote]Post the data that proves that 'gold star' gays are a minority,
Post data proving that it doesn't. You started this. I'll wait.
- What will you wait for, R12? There are gay men all over this board, and all over the world, and many of them have never had sex with a woman. Have you even met any gay men before, R12? Ask around, and see if all the gay men are actually bisexual, as you want them to be.
R1
- [quote]What will you wait for, [[R12]]? There are gay men all over this board, and all over the world, and many of them have never had sex with a woman.
Anecdotal. I want to see the data! Come on, let's see that data!
- That's stupid, R12. Have most straight men had sex with a man, just to see if they're actually straight? You won't find a majority of gay men who have had sex with a woman, even with societal pressure in its favor.
- You were asked for data first, R12. Provide it - all of us are waiting.
- [quote]Have most straight men had sex with a man, just to see if they're actually straight?
No, because heterosexuality is the norm. Homosexuality is not, and with it comes all types of baggage. It's bashed into little boys' brains that they are meant to be with girls, not boys. You better make sure that you can't handle heterosexuality first, before going in the other direction. Heterosexuality is easier.
- [quote]You were asked for data first, [R12]. Provide it - all of us are waiting.
You made the initial proclamation. The burden of proof is on you. Let's see that date, bitch!
- I'm not R1, dear. The onus is on you to provide 'date', so make good on your claim.
- Yeah... I don't think anyone would ever question that.
- Sorry, I read that as R11.
R1
- [quote]“I personally have never had sex with a woman,” Rannells
Women everywhere heave a sigh of relief. He is a fugly creature.
- Seems like gay men who never had sex with opposite sex is wrong. Then again my when straight have sex with guy even when they like it, gays call that straight guy is actually wasn't straight, gay or at least he's bi. What's wrong if gay men never had sex/been with opposite sex? Gays make such a big deal if gay men never been with girl and call straight guy who slept with guy wasn't straight.
- you're not Gay if you never been with opposite sex.you must fuck girl at least once, no pressure from religion/society tho.
- R23, I'm sorry, but you are not yet ready to post on an English-language message board. Continue to work hard in your ESL classes, and you'll get there eventually.
Regarding the subject at hand, I am 47 and can think of only one gay man I know near my age who has never had sex with a woman. Stats may be different for younger guys who came out earlier and didn't face as much pressure to be straight, but it's probably still a stretch to say that MOST gay men have NEVER had sex with a woman.
- Go check out the 'Have You Ever Had Sex With A Woman?' thread, R25. So far, most gay men are answering 'no'. And remember, this website skews older, when those pressures were greater.
- The poll is at 66% percent now, and it's unlikely to fall below 50%, unless straight trolls invade the poll. Most gay men have not had sex with a woman, R12.
- I'm 29, and am fucking PLATINUM star. I don't even like to HUG women, and I most *certainly* have not stuck my dick in one. I won't even kiss them on the cheek.
- [quote]Most gay men have not had sex with a woman, [R12].
That may well be true, but a highly unscientific poll on Datalounge is no proof of anything.
- R10 Exactly. Then they are surprised that people don't take them seriously as actors. Well, if you talk publicly about your sex life then don't be surprised that it's all people care about.
- It's more likely to be true by virtue of the nature of gay men, R29. While the DL poll may not be Gallup (a great example of how even 'scientific' polls are often faulty), it still provides a reasonable gauge.
Can you provide a IP-logging poll with contrary results? Or is your word good enough?
- He looks.like an ugly woman
- I'm 50, the answer is no.
Haven't you all ever heard of the Kinsey scale? Why do you think society determines everything?
I'm frankly repulsed by the idea of having sex with a woman and no amount of societal pressure could compel me to do it, and I'm sure that's been true for many men for hundreds of years in cultures all over the world. (Women, on the other hand, tend not to have that option if they're lesbians.)
- [quote]Can you provide a IP-logging poll with contrary results? Or is your word good enough?
My word about what? I don't claim to know whether most gay men have or have not slept with women; I just don't think a DL poll is a particularly reliable indicator.
- R33, a total girly flamer
- Your earlier claim, R34: "but it's probably still a stretch to say that MOST gay men have NEVER had sex with a woman."
In other words, you believe that most gay men have had sex with a woman.
- Many gay men have married women and sired children because it's expected of them, r33. It's easy for you to say you wouldn't do that, living in the western world. Most people here mind their own business.
- Are you familiar with the meaning of 'probably,' r36? Yeah, I think it's likely that more gay men than not have slept with a woman at some point, but I don't claim to know that for a fact.
- It's still a claim you made, dear. You didn't say 'probably' in the other direction, right?
- PS, let me put it this way, r36. The DL poll could show that most respondents HAVE slept with a woman, and I'd still say, "So what? It's unscientific," even though it supported my own assumption.
- Fair enough, R40. But just because you and your friends have drunk the pussy juice doesn't mean all the other gays have.
- [quote]But just because you and your friends have drunk the pussy juice doesn't mean all the other gays have.
That's true, r41. It also doesn't mean they haven't. Either way, we're not going to arrive at a reliable answer to this question within the confines of Datalounge.

- I care, because straights are always saying that gays just need to find a good woman, R42. When we inflate those numbers of gay men having had sex with women, we give them ammunition.
- Rannells states the obvious methinks. What woman would want to have sex with him? What man for that matter?
Apparently he's great friends with Anderson and was on the daytime show the other day. They greeted each other with a friendly man-hug.
- Most of my gay friends and myself have had sex with women. Nearly all when they were young, before they had a full-fledged gay sex life. It wasn't so much "experimenting" as doing what was socially accepted and also really wanting sex of some sort.
People wonder how I got excited, erect. Well, the excitement didn't really come from the woman. I wasn't rock hard because I was so into her body, her tits, etc. I was more excited simply about getting off. Young, perpetually horny and half-hard, being touched, sucked, etc. was exciting and I could maintain an erection. And with that erection I was able to penetrate her and give her what was probably some of the worst sex of her life before I came. Yep, sex with women about five times, and am glad I moved on. Lol.
- [quote]I care, because straights are always saying that gays just need to find a good woman, [R42]. When we inflate those numbers of gay men having had sex with women, we give them ammunition.
That doesn't make sense. A gay man who has tried sex with a woman and nonetheless decided he's gay is, if anything, ammunition for the argument that a good woman will NOT make him straight.
In any case, anyone backward or delusional enough to believe that a gay man "just needs to find a good woman" is unlikely to be swayed by logic and evidence.
- Threads like this depress me, if only because of its continued insistence that *actions* are more important than what is going on in one's heart. Here are some FACTS, whether you like to believe them or not (that's not the same with argument they're not true, which you can't, because they're FACTS):
1. Untold millions of closeted men, both married and involved in opposite-sex relationships, have sex with women every day.
2. In more rural and homophobic areas of the country, the pressure on closeted gay men to have sex with women is significantly greater.
3. It is not THAT hard to have sex with a woman; in fact, it's roughly akin to having sex with a man you don't find particularly attractive. You just close your eyes and fantasize about a much hotter partner.
4. While the term "gold star dyke" was originally created to describe women who were virgins with men, it has nevertheless become increasingly common with men as well (and has the same meaning).
5. The term YMMV ("your mileage may vary") is likely never truer than here: some of you may have sets of friends who are without exception 100% gold star, a few of you may have friends at the opposite end (all have been with women at some point in their lives, and a lot (probably the majority) of us fall somewhere in between. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with any of the above.
And in case you're wondering, I'm technically a gold-star gay, but I've made out with a woman. My best friend was gold-star gay for 12 years, but then got really drunk with one of his hags one night and had sex with her (penetrative sex including reaching orgasm). He didn't hate it but doesn't plan on doing it again. AND NO, HE IS ABSOLUTELY NOT BISEXUAL (as much as I know some of you "label queens" who insist on labeling EVERYTHING within narrow parameters would love to do so).
- R44 is correct.
- Just say NO to bearded clam chowder with a side of stinkfish duxelle!
Icky icky two by four, pussy makes me barf on the floor.
- I have tons of 20something LA gay male friends, and not a single one of them has ever had sex with a female or ever had any inclination or curiosity to do so. Very few young and out gay men, these days, experiment with women at all.
- Also want to add: Boys these days are realizing they're 100% gay at much younger ages, and are identifying/coming out as gay, too. I was shocked to not only learn that my 14 y.o nephew came out as gay at his High School, but that he has an entire crew of other openly gay boys (10 or more) that he hangs out with/has dated/is flirting with.
- None of you goobers will post a poll thread?
- secure gay men haven't had sex with women, nor felt the need to. Insecure gay men have, because they fear their own sexuality...... or they're just horney little fuckers who would stick their dicks into overripe plantains for a thrill.
- He'll be a regular on Girls this season. How does he do two TV shows???
- He will be nude on Girls this year.
just%20a%20warning
- Sounds like there are bunch of bi guys on this thread.
- R54 A regular on a tv series usually is allowed up to three guest appearances on another tv program.
- I think Girls shoots in the summer (before the other show started)
- Actually he is leaving Girls. He will probably appear from time to time as a guest star, but he will be regular only on TNN.
- If he could successfully have sex with a woman, then it will get easier and better each successive time, R46. At least that's the straight male thought process on us gays.
- He's listed for the first 3 episodes of Girls.
- Anyone who has sex with Andrew Rannells IS having sex with a woman!

- R61 Yes, because he will leave mid-season.
From Huffington Post interview (January 9th):
[quote]But in a conversation with HuffPost TV, Rannells revealed that his busy schedule finally caught up with him this summer, when both "Girls" and "The New Normal" were shooting their new seasons on opposite coasts. As a result, he's leaving "Girls" mid-way through the season, but not before taking Elijah on a roller-coaster ride in Season 2.
So you've been working double TV duty lately. Has that been exhausting?
Yeah, a little bit. Although it worked out sort of perfectly. We started the second season of "Girls" while I was just wrapping up "The Book Of Mormon," and then we had two episodes sort of in the clear after I left "The Book Of Mormon," and I got to just focus on ["Girls"]. Then I wrapped that up and moved to L.A. [to shoot 'The New Normal.'] It all kind of timed out perfectly.
Will we get to see Elijah after the first four episodes [that were sent to the press]?
Elijah is out for a bit.
Does he come back at all?
No. He's finished for the season. But it felt like a very eventful season for Elijah.
Was it scheduling that led to that?
It was definitely ... I'm the luckiest guy in the world that I had this opportunity to do both of these shows, and it does come down to a scheduling thing and a timing thing. One is shot in Los Angeles and one is here [in New York]. Unfortunately, that's the way it works. I mean, if I could be in two places at once I obviously would have done it. And I'm so grateful to Jenni [Konner, "Girls" showrunner ] and to Lena and to Judd [Apatow, executive producer of "Girls"] that they were flexible enough to figure that out, with the timing of all of it. Because it's a hard thing, to put together these shows with people's schedules, and I'm very grateful for the fact that they were generous enough to work around that ... because what an awesome show to be a part of.
Is there a sadness that you only get four "Girls" episodes this season?
Totally. Oh my god, yeah. I was completely heartbroken ... I mean, if I could be hanging out with Hannah all the time I would. So yes, I miss them terribly.
"Girls" executive producer and showrunner Jenni Konner was also disappointed about Rannells' departure, but wished him well on "The New Normal" and joked about the Rannells' tug-of-war happening between the two shows. "It was sad," Konner said of seeing him go. "And Ali Adler, who's the showrunner of "The New Normal," is one of my closest friends, so we torture each other all the time, like, 'I'm with Andrew now. Where are you? Oh, I'm going to the premiere with him tomorrow.' So I have to support them and be happy for them."

- Elijah slapping Marnie in the crack episode was one of last season's highlights.
- Where did he get his statistics? I don't think he is correct!!!! He might need to take the dick outta his ass before talking shit!

- New Normal will be cancelled soon, so he'll have more time for better projects.
- Apparently Andrew Rannells is naked in tonights Girls episode and showing naked butt.
Also the question was asked of him because his Gay character on Girls will try to have sex with a woman in one of the episodes.
- Yes, he was very naked tonight. Great scene.
- Did you love his butt?
- "I'll show anything!"
