If no one comes forward with an answer I'm willing to make something up.
I dont know but it's good question.
Better yet, is it pronounced like "date" or "dat"?
Way back when this site was more varied, gossip was just a small section.
It actually offered articles and info.....hence the data lounge.....an online place for gays to hang out and socialize virtually.
Sorry, but I think the gays pronounce it "The Dah Tah Lounge"
This gay doesn't, R6.

Epic fail, r8.
A demented Grand Matron of the Eastern Star was out picking mushrooms and found gold plates and a magic Ben Wa ball that, when inserted, allowed her to read what had been scratched onto the plates with demonic flatware. She changed into a leather-wearing vampiric bitch-goddess in the process. When finished, the plates disappeared (or she hocked them at the Crunt Pawnshop in the Meatpacking District). Years passed as she slowly parlayed her wisdom into a career in disco, soft porn and, finally, secretarial work. She finally started a temp position with a small media company that operated out of the bathtub of a couple of clueless entrepreneurs. Seeing the opportunity to spread her gospel of bitchery across the planet, she took over their minds and began to have them build a web site of formidable occult power. She christened it "The DataLounge" in order to attract physicists and alcoholics, but in the end an altogether different group arrived. She transformed into The Webmistress, taking residence in the sub-basement cubicle of the new International Media Tower her minions built as a command center. From there she began taking over the minds and spirits of each person who happened into the site, like a spider catching flies. And each person carried her Message of Doom into their homes and communities, spreading a mania and despair upon which she fed, leading otherwise sane members of gaydom to spend endless hours constructing elaborate scenarios to answer simple questions posed by newcomers to the Horror, in hopes that somehow the neophytes will be driven off before the insidious taint takes over their minds and souls and they become servants of Her Majesty, trembling lest she arbitrarily cut them off from her Queendom, as is her Mysterious Wont.
bitchyqueens.com was already taken.
i thought maybe it had something to do with "DL" - "down low" (on the "down low")...?
There used to be data here. Lots of categories - health, legislation, etc - all gay related.
So we would read the data. Then we would lounge in the forums discussing it all. Some of us wore togas.
That's my memory and I'm sticking to it.
R8, thanks for the good imitation of Wund Girl. She popped up a couple of times last year. I hope she frequents this place more often in 2013.
I think it was 2005 when the webitor stopped publishing a little editorial on the front page.
I enjoyed those.
R6 is correct. You don't say DAY-TA, so why would you say DAY-TA Lounge?
At times I call it Dental Lounge. I am not sure why other than the fact I have had many root canals.
I say both day-ta and day-ta lounge. I'm sure Captain Piccard knew what he was saying when he called for Lieutenant Day-ta.
It is spelt as day-ta. Da-ta would be spelled datta.
Actually R17, people do say Day-ta. That is the most common American pronunciation. The Dah-Ta pronunciation is an accepted alternative, but less common.
Most Americans say "day-ta."
Brits say dah-tuh.
What a dump!
Cheryl opened her legs and gave a mighty push...
Well, I wish I could take that much credit, R25. But I would like to remind everyone that we do not EVER question the Editor and his decisions, including the birthing name of Datalounge. He has his reasons.
