Have you ever met someone who was infamous - like a highly publicized criminal or someone who was involved in a public scandal?
I'm closely related to one and see her frequently. I never bring up the public scandal with her. I figure she's been through enough already!
A friend of my mom's waited on Patricia Krenwinkel at a department store in Mobile, Alabama, shortly before she was arrested in 1969.
R2 reminds me:
A guy I met told me how he asked a mousy girl at a party in Detroit in the 70s to dance with him. She turned him down, and he didn't give her any more thought. A few weeks later his buddy said "You know that little girl you asked to dance? She just tried to shoot the president". It was Squeaky Fromme.
I don't know what she was doing in Detroit. The guy said the party was full of weird people who appeared to be into black magic, and he left because they were creeping him out.
"I'm closely related to one and see her frequently. I never bring up the public scandal with her. I figure she's been through enough already!"
In 1969, I took a poli-sci class with Karl Rove at the University of Utah.
^ What was Karl Rove like? A know-it-all?
Klaus von Bulow. It was just a quick moment -- I was working at an event he was attending -- but in the course of our very brief exchange, he made a comment that seemed to say a lot about his true nature. Of course, I was kind of nervous through the whole thing, so I was glad it only lasted about a minute.
You read my mind R4.
What was the comment, r7?
r4 and r8 - no, it's not her. I would feel horrible if I revealed her real name and talked about her on datalounge.
Trust me, it's no fun being an infamous person in the public eye. My family member nearly had a nervous breakdown during the first week of the scandal. The media chased her like crazy and I even got a couple of calls from them. The whole thing gave me an insight into how the media really gets facts wrong. A lot of what they reported was inaccurate. I'm glad it's behind her now and she's living a normal life.
I'm a prison guard in what is the "Prison Capital" of Canada, so yes, I get to speak to our most notorious weirdos almost every workday.
Monica Lewinsky, R10?
My cousin was married to a police officer who was involved in a sex scandal. There was a huge controversy because the police chief let him keep his job.
Paul of Paul and Karla infamy R11?
R9, it was a comment about how he felt the company I worked for should sue another company, for a really stupid reason. Showed me how his mind worked.
Can't name names R14 but clearly you are familiar with the city and the walls I work within
I wonder if you'll get to meet Luka Magnotta, R11. Several months ago some DLers were convinced he was posting here shortley before he was apprehended
After I found out that my ovarian cyst had returned, I walked out of the docs office and ran into William Kennedy Smith on the the street.
When I worked at the Clackamas Town Center mall, I used to see Tonya Harding when she practiced at the ice rink. And one day in Nordstrom's Annette O'Toole asked me where the ladies room was.
I once saw Kenneth Lay at a quiet nice restaurant here in Portland, OR during the Enron trials. it was him (all three people at my table immediately agreed it was him and identified him), and the woman he was with, we later discovered by using Google, was his wife. we had no idea what he was doing in Portland, OR.
A few months later he "died."
Tonya Harding cruised me once.
I was in the intensive care ward when a serial killer was murdering patients there in 1983. Ironically, I was there for a suicide attempt, but the killer(a doctor) seemed to prefer killing the elderly.
I hate to be fussy R19, but we don't "meet" cons .... we work with them.
My friend's sister lived in the same apartment building as Fred and Rose West, before they shifted to Cromwell Street. She even used to say hello to Rose on the stairs. Said she seemed normal.
Saw Hedda Nussbaum (of Joel and "Lisa Steinberg" fame) in a grocery store in Danbury, CT, approximately 1990. Took me about 15 seconds to connect the battered face with the name. Wow, I'm old.
I was at a party in Palm Springs a number of years ago, and the conversation turned to "share your worst boyfriend stories."
It was the usual, "he was a dick", "he cheated on me" and so on.
Then one guy says "I dated John Wayne Gacy."
The room goes silent.
I can't remember how they met, but he'd go out to Gacy's house and they'd fuck in the garage while the Gacy's wife would be in the kitchen cooking dinner.
Apparently, this was before Gacy started murdering boys and burying them in the basement crawl space.
The room remained silent until some said loudly "YOU WIN!!!"
"Tonya Harding cruised me once."
Are you male or female?
Every day, with unbearable regret.
Tonya Harding and I played pool at the Galaxy Restaurant & Lounge in Portland,Or.
She was friendly and I beat her if I remember correctly.
Many years ago I was at a friend's place when John Wayne Bobbit came by for an interview. I was invited to stay and they were talking when John whipped it out to prove his re-attached dick worked.
I worked at Doubleday Bookshop on 57th and 5th Avenue across from Tiffany's. Talked to Audrey Hepburn while looking over her shoulder at Tiffany's. But also sold a dictionary to Peter Bogdonovitch with Dorothy Stratten, who was soon murdered by her jealous husband. Helped Jackie O,pick out Elvis records on Christmas Eve and couldn't help but think of her crawling out on the back of that car in Dallas. But the weirdest memory is of Nicholle, standing by herself in her Cayote coat, not looking at any books, while O.J.talked to fans and looked around the store. Wish I could have warned her.
I sat next to William Kennedy Smith on a plane......long island to chicago and he had the creepiest smile the whole time, very odd.....it was weeks after the trial ended.....
. Wish I could have warned her.
Warned her of what? When your man beats you on the regular, you know damn well he's going to kill you.
You're right R36. I've thought of that too. But I have this memory of her looking very vulnerable.
R33, I remember that interview from GQ.
R35, was this on Southwest?
I met Rod Blagojevich, during his trial, at the memorial service for the mother of one of his lawyers. He was charming, but it was a definite distraction for him to be there.
Would anyone count Donald Trump "infamous" now, in light of his Birther nonsense and public and degrading name-calling with Rosie?
I saw him at work, he was dedicating something and was there to unveil the plaque. I did a double-take as we passed each other in the hall and he smiled and nodded his head in acknowledgement and said "how ya doing?" or some such. I'm not allowed to speak to celebrities that come to my place of employment unless it has to do directly with their business reason to be there, so it's not like I could do anything and anyway, I'd never jeopardize my job if I could help it.
At age ten, I interrogated Anthony Mirra, one of the most violent mobsters in NYC history, in the driveway of our hi-rise, relating to why he was hanging around my mother.
"What do you do for a living?" I asked?
He seemed to like that I cared about Mom so much.
I used to have sex with a guy who is famous for writing underground books using an alias. His books are about how to cook meth, build a bomb, manufacture LSD, poison someone, etc. He lives locally and I still see him around on occasion. He is professionally employed as an engineer, "straight", and kind of nuts. But his craziness made it all kind of hot and fun. This was 20 years ago. He has been featured in Playboy, 60 Minutes, and has an FBI file that is miles thick.
Do you want to hear my OJ encounter again? It was before he was arrested, outside at a party, where I happened to be the only female. Drunk&drugged, beyond obnoxious, incredibly volatile and rude, and more cruelly insulting than the worst psychos on DL. The young pale white girl waiting in the back of his limo was also beyond drunk. He verbally abused her as well. The passive black male chaffeur, stood and waited, looking blase.
And one day in Nordstrom's Annette O'Toole asked me where the ladies room was.
In what universe is Annette O'Toole considered "infamous"?
I stood next to Suzen Johnson (sp, Frank Gifford's paramour, at the baggage claim in PBI, she was attractive in a trashy way.
Ron Brown's father worked at a store I shopped at regularly. I remember staring at him trying to remember where I'd seen him before. This was well after the OJ trial and he was working retail, so I guess he didn't make any money from all his CNN appearances. I heard that the Brown family spent all the money they raised from the Nicole Brown Simpson Foundation on themselves.
R24, that is very bizarre. It would make a good short story or teleplay.
A friend of mine is a Mason and knew Paul Bernardo because Paul joined his Masonic Lodge a year or so before being caught. Paul's wife, the also infamous Karla Homolka, would come to their spousal Masonic summer picnics. Apparently Paul was a very open and friendly kind of guy and Karla was quite shy while around him.
I was acquainted with serial killer "The Night Stalker" Richard Ramirez's wife. She is nice and works in retail. She likes Johnny Depp movies, because of his resemblance to her husband. She dyes her hair black.
"Do you want to hear my OJ encounter again? It was before he was arrested, outside at a party, where I happened to be the only female. Drunk&drugged, beyond obnoxious, incredibly volatile and rude, and more cruelly insulting than the worst psychos on DL. Was he married to Nicole at the time? He sounds like a huge asshole (no surprise there)
I eiffel tower'd an Asian chick with James Holmes.
I met the devil down in Georgia
I used to wait on Allen Dorfman, the Teamster official who was portrayed in CASINO. He always had a table full of guys who you knew were either mobsters or Teamsters, and they looked exactly like the old mafia guys in that movie.
One time, not too long before they killed him, he left a little box of golf balls with his name embossed on them at the table. I wish I had kept them.
R53, were they good tippers? All the mob guys I waited on were great tippers...100% or more.
I drove a truck for KLLM Transport out of Jackson, Mississippi for a number of years. Bernie Ebbers bought controlling interest in the corporation as a white knight when another reefer trucking company was trying a hostile takeover. After the World Comm scandal, when he had lost his job at World Comm/MCI, Bernie came and took over the management of KLLM. He was friendly and treated the truckdrivers just fine. He actually helped get the company back on the road to financial recovery, but he fired all the previous management which they considered to be a betrayal of his "white knight" agreements with them. Eventually he was convicted in the World Comm scandal, and had to turn over all of his assets, including KLLM to a receiver for the MCI stockholders, and went to prison. I guess he is still there.
[R53], were they good tippers? All the mob guys I waited on were great tippers...100% or more.
Oh my yes, especially during the week when they came in with their girlfriends. On the weekends with their wives, not so much.
R50, Insanely beyond asshole. Rumor is that OJ always dated girls with long blond hair who looked like Nicole, and in awe of his celeb status. The young blond (don't think it was Nicole) in the car screamed at him, "Oh don't mind OJ; he's always drunk at parties." His angry response was all 4-letter words. Although the blond sounded "out-of-it," I can't understand how any sane/sober person would be around someone that violently aggressive for more than 2 seconds. Most pro ballers that I've met compensate for their superior physical size by acting like "teddybears." OJ was just the opposite, although he didn't try to hit me, he used his body to intimidate, not just his abusive language. By the way, everyone around me were older white men, just wanting his attention. I could not see how I provoked him either. I was wearing a miniskirt and heels, and I'm only 5'4" and a curvy size 10.
Ugh. William Kennedy Smith about 10 years ago. He used to (or maybe still does) live in one of those white townhouses on Oakdale, east of Broadway. I have a friend who used to live in the plus four next door to them. I accompanied her when she took her dog out for a walk and we ran into Smith and a blonde woman who my friend said is one of his younger sisters. Anyway, my friend and the woman knew each other from dog walking and were friendly. Smith, on the other hand could not make eye contact, and barely said hello. It was a brief three minute exchange of pleasantries that he just couldn't seem to muster. I'm a female, also. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but the situation was entirely innocuous and [italic]tense[/italic]. Can't imagine how he'd handle a loaded situation.
Another story about him that preceded the incident above by seven or eight years. A friend's boyfriend worked at the Seattle's Best on the corner Oakdale and Broadway. He made the mistake of saying to him "you look like WKS" when he came in for coffee one morning. The way the story was relayed to me, it was said innocently as part of conversation made over the cash register. He didn't really think it was him. Barista got fired.
This is a strange one. I encountered Tokyo Rose. Yes, that Tokyo Rose who was charged with treason and later pardoned by Carter or Ford. Her family owned (or still owns) Toguri Imports on Clark and Belmont. She worked behind the counter. Tiny, very old, nice and no-nonsense.
Mike Ditka, floridly drunk outside his restaurant pumping fists with people entering or leaving.
Bernie Ebbers bought controlling interest in the corporation as a white knight when another reefer trucking company
And one day in Nordstrom's Annette O'Toole asked me where the ladies room was.
Well, there went your Shitty Little Ann story.

She got railroaded -- there is a question whether she was actually TR, one of a dozen or so women who called themselves TR or just a poor gal who caught caught on the wrong side on 12-7-1941.
My Dad was one of a group of about 30 former GIs who campaigned for her freedom soon after she was "caught." They had no hard feelings and thought the US was being a bit over the top with her.
Did anyone ever meet John Wayne Gacy or Richard Speck??? OMG! Shivers!!!!! (and not the GOOD kind!)
Read the thread, R61.
Ok, saw it. Sorry. But what about Richard SPECK. And it doesn't say anything about JWG, really.
I worked at the White House when the Monica scandal came out. I didn't know her.
I think r34 is a bit unclear on the concept of this thread.
She did indeed, R60. The story I heard is that her U.S.-based family sent her back to Japan as a teen to spend time with family and was caught up in the outbreak of the war. Since her English was unaccented, the authorities swept down on her and got her cooperation when her family was threatened. Whether threatened or not, can you imagine being 16 or 17, far away from home, and having this happen to you?
I read that she made knowing references and used phrasing which provided a subtext that diminished the overt message and was easily understood by the GIs (at least the smarter ones).
I'm glad your dad stood up for her. You should be proud of him.
Gennifer Flowers at a smallish house party. She "held court" (best way to describe it) in a corner with two aging Eurotrash-looking guys, who fetched her drinks, etc. When people approached and said hello -- and this was in a private home, not a club -- she acted like she was the queen of Studio 54 or something. Bad facelift and fillers, too.
Here's a recent picture. She looked pretty much like this.
My mom used to say of GF, She's a sexualized version of Hillary! My mom was very proud of this insight so I thought I'd share.
"...I was wearing a miniskirt and heels, and I'm only 5'4" and a curvy size 10."
R57, are you a M or F?
"I worked at the White House when the Monica scandal came out. I didn't know her."
Any insights into Bill or Hill?
I met both Bill Clinton and John Edwards. :-)
And shopped in the Paris Lalique store nwxt to Andy Williams and Claudine Longet, years post-Spider. I pretended they weren't there, as...awkward!
About 10 years ago, I got in an argument with Pete Rose at a busy dry cleaners. I was patiently awaiting my turn when he came barreling in, and walked straight up to the counter with his ticket -- ignoring me and the two other people waiting in line. I called out, "Excuse me, but I'm next. There's a line." (gesturing behind me). He turned and snarled at me, "I'm in a hurry." I replied, "Well, so am I...and maybe these people are, too." He said dismissively, "Too bad" and then turned back to the young gal at the counter and snarled at her, "So, are you gonna get my stuff or what?" She took the ticket and scurried off. I was furious. Very loudly, so everyone could hear me, I said, "Oh, I see.....because you are PETE ROSE, you CLEARLY have more important things going on than the rest of us! That was great, the way you just bullied that girl into helping you first. Do you do this everywhere or just at the dry cleaners?" He called me a bitch, I called him an entitled asshole. The gal reappeared with his cleaned garments, and ran his credit card. There was a suit in his order.....and I couldn't resist. As he turned to leave, I said, "Nice suit, Pete! Is that for your Hall of Fame induction ceremony? Oh wait.....that's right, you were banned from HOF. That must suck!" He turned around and looked at me like he was gonna kill me, told me to fuck-off, and stormed out the door. The 20-something guy behind me in line started laughing, and said, "That was awesome! What a DICK!!"
I backed hard into Whatsisname Goetz -- the guy who shot a black kid on the subway because he asked him for change or something -- in a bookstore in New York. My first thought was, "Don't shoot!"
R69, I was just trying to convey that I did not come across as physically threatening. The blond in the car was very petite. Was Nichole Simpson?
Some men who want a far smaller and physically weaker partner have very serious ego and control issues.
"I met both Bill Clinton and John Edwards. :-)"
Was John Edwards handsome in person?
I met a man several times that was part of a pretty nasty NYC gang. Remember the movie starring Denzel Washington, American Gangster?
I was a waiter at a dinner at the home of the CEO of The GAP, and 9 West twenty years ago. Dewi Sukarno, Raine Spencer, and Rupert Murdoch were among the dozen guests. I had only the vaguest idea who they were at the time.
My grandfather and an uncle ran into Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker while hunting in the Ozarks. He said they were living out of their car and that two other people were with them.
That's scary, r78. He's so lucky to have had a rifle when he ran into them or he would've probably been a goner.
I met Bill Gates
Lance Bass sucked my cock
Used to live near Lucianne Goldberg. She was just an old bag walking around the nabe as far as I could tell. Then suddenly, there was press camped out in front of her building. Shortly after that I saw her buying smokes at a newsstand and she bought a pink lighter, which I gave her grief for and she kind of sneared at me. How innocent the 90's were.
A friend of mine was invited up to Phil Spector's suite at the Waldorf with a few other people - this was in the mid 1990's. He called downstairs to "get someone up here to pour" as in a bartender and he impled that my attractive blonde friend was a hooker - although she is actually an opera singer and was a friend of one of the other guys there.
I see Mlop around town quite a bit. Infamous on DL. She is a wacky gal. Everytime I see her she says something odd - but she is harmless.
Hopefully, you have another job lined up. Hopefully not Millhaven.
Several years ago I was dragged to Church by my mother for midnight (Xmas) mass at the Saint Charles Boromeo Catholic Church in North Hollywood. When it came time to "shake hands during peace" I turned to the guy behind me and realized he was ... Kato Kaelin (of OJ Simpson infamy). Totally random and somehow hilarious to have Mr. Kaelin wishing that "peace be with me, dude."
This is [R84} again ... another weird encounter ... I ran into Michael Jackson coming out of the men's restroom near the Paradise Buffet at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas. I was just finishing my "business" when his body guard came in with hotel security and they told everyone to leave immediately. As I was leaving, Michael passed me on his way in. I guess he was pee-shy.
Less than a year later he was dead.
How bizarre, R85... What if you were mid-defecation?
a prison guard reads the Datalounge? I've heard it all!
Yep. Virgina McMartin of the infamous McMartin preschool child abuse trial in CA in the '80s. It became the longest criminal trial in US history. Got to talk to the her, too. She came into my aunt's nail salon in Torrance to get a mani and pedicure. No one recognized her but I did as I was a news junkie as a young kid. This was in 1998 I think.
She was not shy about identifying herself. She was talking to the pedicurist about it. The pedicurist didn't know her and did the "uh huh. oh."
It was surreal actually. I was just young kid when the McMartin case was unfolding but I definitely knew about it. You couldn't turn on the news without hearing about it. It was a precursor to the OJ Simpson media hoopla. Yet here she was just an old, old lady so nonchalant as she talked about her trial.
I have been in a corresponding relationship with a convicted murderer for over 13 years now and am in posession of about 100 letters. This boy/man is well-known to each of the elders over 45 in this site.
Horrific murderer, with umpteen made-for-TV movies made about his murder. It made the news every single day of each of his 2 trials.
I send him my old Joan Didion books, Whitman and Sexton poetry books, dictionary, stamps and envelopes. They all get to him even though this is contraband.
I am writing about him, his family and the murder. Though it was hinted that he was bisexual, and he often engages in risque talk with me, he got married while in prison years ago.
His penmanship is less penmanship than pure calligraphy of the highest order seen in documents such as the Magna Carta and other old English publications. He is talented, manipulative and one of the coldest murderers this country has known in the past 30 years.
more hints please, R89. Must be nice to exchange letters with a literary sociopath.
Jeffery MacDonald, r89?
One of the Menendez brothers, R89? Creepy.
I think you're right, r92
Last 30 years mean the crimes would have to have been in the '80s. There's only a handful of notorious killers.
r89 is it Richard Ramirez? He married in prison.
I think it is Ramirez. Man/boy clue -- Ramirez was 24 when he committed the 1984 murders in Oakland. At 13, he witnessed his cousin killing someone. He is also known to have nice handwriting despite not having much of an educating. As for being manipulative, pretty much all serial killers are manipulative.
If it is Ramirez, that's not a surprise as he has many penpals.
google Ramirez's handwriting. It is very pretty.
r95, I thought he only had one trial.
You're right, r96. r89's clues do fit one of the Menendez brothers. man/boy - Lyle was 21 and Erik was only 18; and the family part; and the 2 trials.
I would hardly describe either of them as one of the coldest murderer(s) in the last 30 years. If it is to be believed, their father was abusive and they were just greedy bastards. Richard Ramirez, now that is a cold-blooded killer.
By the way, why do you need to over 45 to know infamous murderers? Who hasn't heard of the Menendez Brothers, John Wayne Gacy or Richard Ramirez?
I lived a block away from "Clark Rockefeller" in Boston. My mother went on two dates with a "ridiculously charming and handsome" Ted Bundy at the University of Washington in Seattle just weeks before he came calling on the sorority.
Holy shit R98, that's a good one!
89 is obviously talking about one of the Menendez brothers, probably Eric, since he says man/boy. If he is telling the truth, I don't know why he would not just write the name instead of using this "blind item" which is the hallmark of liars.
Was visting a cousin in around 2003 in San Diego who sold antiques/special garage sale finds at this sort of shopping center with stalls of other doing the same thing. Waited outside to meet her and she came out with a freaked-out look on her face, saying she had just seen Jackie Peterson (Scott Peterson's mother, who apparently also sold antiques). This was in the heat of the trial.
Read the story on the family years later and apparently Jackie was quite a piece of work.
I used to work with George Trofimoff.
Arrogant asshole. Major alcohol problems. Looking back, I wonder how he slipped under the radar for so long. He had all the classic symptoms of being a double agent. Well, actually, he slipped under the radar because the CI types in both the US Army and the German government were so sure that someone of such high rank could NEVER be a spy.
I grew up in the Chicago suburbs where a lot of the Chicgo Mafia, or 'The Outfit" as they're called, live. I had met quite a few of the guys involved and prosecuted in the "Operation Family Secrets" trial in Chicago. I had met them because for many years I played little league and neighborhood football and basketball games with their kids and the parents of those kids seemed to have a party for the baseball team pretty much every weekend in the summer. I never thought of their kids as being any differant than the rest of us, but I was told by one of the older boys when I was a real young kid that those boys could not be picked on or bullied in any way. I was told I was never ever to hit them or at least never to throw the first punch or to ever win a fight with them no matter what. I was a really mellow kid so that was never an issue.
I also was introduced to Anthony Spilotro and his brother Michael at one of those parties. It's horrible to admit this but my stupid 13 year old self had a big old crush on Michael Spilatro that summer. I followed him arround like some stupid puppy at the two pool parties he was at that summer. Damn, that's embaressing to admit even now.
If you don't know who Anthony and Michael Spilatro were, Martin Scorsese's film Casino is based on the Las Vegas careers of Spilotro and Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal, whom the Ace Rothstein character (played by Robert DeNiro) was based on. The character Nicholas Nicky Santoro (played by Joe Pesci) is based on Spilotro. Nicky Santoro and his brother Dominic (Philip Suriano), based on Tony's brother Michael Spilotro)
The link is to the wiki page on the "Operation Family Secrets" if anyone's interested
Andrew Crispo had a crush on me when I was a young, tight-bodied waiter years ago.
Well, I guess "crush" is a quaint term. He stalked me. At first I responded. I didn't know who he was, and I had a thing for older, handsome, dapper daddies. We chit-chatted/flirted a bit and he made overtures of us getting together.
But I soon found out who he was and was terrified. From that point on, whenever he came in to the restaurant I refused to wait on him. Still, I would catch him staring at me. I just gave a weak smile.
He eventually stopped coming in. And as a joke that year at our Xmas party, my secret Santa gave me a copy of the book Bag of Toys.
I posted this before, but this is a better thread for it. I get my hair cut at The Hair on SM Blvd. Years and years back, I was getting my hair cut next to this guy and the bad vibes he gave off were unreal. He wasn't talkative or even threatening, necessarily. There was just something about him that was dark, cold and terrifying. My barber turned the chair in his direction and my gaze caught his for a brief second and my blood froze. My barber couldn't finish my hair fast enough.
When I went back in a few months later, everyone was talking about the psycho who always came in and was just caught by the police for being a serial killer. Yup, I was next to Richard Ramirez.
It's not that difficult to be acquainted with Luka Magnotta. No one I know would admit to having met him or even chatting online, but hundreds (if not thousands) have had memorable encounters with him.
He was always crazy, though the cannibalism aspect shocked me.
That sent a shiver down my spine, R106.
We were almost eaten alive by one.
The Staff at La Scala
for reply (70) II worked gor Gore and only saw Clinton in large groups-WH Christmas party 4th of July picnics - major out of town events where they both appeared. I briefed Hilary a few times. Smart!!!!! I made sure I wa triple prepared before those. Bothe Gores were wonderful nice people to work with.
Gores were wonderful nice people to work with.
Were you the one who once posted that Tipper could be very sensitive and cry when things went wrong?
In the early 90s, I hooked up with a very hot German blond bottom named Carsten a couple of times at Steamworks bathhouse in Chicago. He told me that he was a model, which given his looks was quite believable. A month or so after the last hookup, I saw him sitting in a diner in my neighborhood looking very forlorn. I waved as I passed by and he gave a weak wave back.
Within days, I saw why he didn't look so hot. His picture was on the front page of the local gay rag under a giant headline indicating that he had been arrested for murder. I assume that when I saw him in the Sad Cafe, he was either out briefly on bond or knew his arrest was imminent.
His full name is Helmut Carsten Hofer and he had been the secret love toy of a fat middle aged married lawyer named Dean Olds who was a name partner (i.e. the firm name included his name) at a large patent law firm in Chicago.
The murder victim was Olds' wife, who had been killed in their home in a tony North Shore Chicago suburb. Ultimately, Hofer was acquitted of criminal charges in connection with the murder, but not before spending almost two years in the Cook County jail awaiting trial. But both Hofer and Olds were found liable for the wife's death in a civil wrongful death suit. Olds thus lost everything and was disbarred to boot. Hofer got deported. So much for his "modeling" career.
The really, really scary part of that r105 is that he was one of the milder ones.
What happened to Crispo? The last reference I've found about him is in Gawker from '07 and he was said to be cruising online.
My first female Philadelphia cousins attended Springside School when Jean Harris was the headmistress.
The older of the two was (and still is) a bit of a tomboy pothead, while the younger was (and still is!) a studious, elegant, proper ladylike gal.
The tomboy cuz once got busted for doing something naughty, and was suspended from school for the remainder of the week. Miss Harris saw the younger one in the hallway, and flew into a rage! She grabbed her by the arm, and dragged her to the office, cursing her the whole time for disobeying authority and HOW DARE SHE come back to school when she was on suspension?!?!! My sweet girly-good-girl cuz was in tears.
Miss Harris called their house, and DEMANDED my aunt come down to the school IMMEDIATELY to deal with her DISOBEDIENT DAUGHTER.
This was before the days when everybody sued everybody. It was also back when everybody didn't shoot everybody, but I guess they were all lucky to get out of there alive.
Karla Homolka goes by the name of Leanne Teale now, married her lawyers brother, lives in Guadaloupe and has 3 children.
Poor kids, she should not be allowed to reproduce.
I lived next door to Robert Chabers before his last arrest a few years ago for selling drugs.
Remember Leonard Lake and Charles NG, the serial killers? One year, around 1980 they had a booth at the Renaissance Faire in Marin County, Northern CA, and had a unicorn, really just a pretty white goat whose horns were fused together into a single horn.
I never spoke with them at the booth but visited to gaze at the goat. People told me the people at the booth were really strange and later it turned out to be those hideous monsters who killed more than 12 people. Ugh, disgusting. They are both dead now.
What that article doesn't say is the self-serving cunt who tracked her down somehow got hold of a legal document that Homolka wanted or needed and used it to blackmail her into giving her an interview to sell her crappy book.
(Todd is/was a lawyer. I don't know how she got the paper.)
That's the kind of journalistic ethics that allowed her to walk free in the first place.
Not apologizing for a serial killer, but it's nauseating nevertheless.

I thought the police failed to obtain videotape evidence before securing her testimony for the plea bargain?
R127, it's my understanding Karla pled out and then they found the videotape evidence of her participation after the trial.
She testified against Bernardo for the plea, right? I'm just not sure what journalistic ethics have to do with her trial and sentence.
More William Kennedy Smith stories. He used to live down the street from me in the Lakeview neighborhood in Chicago and I saw him a few times over the years. The only noteworthy sighting was him seeing a re-release of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" by himself at the Century Mall movie theater around 2000. He was sitting right behind me and seemed to be loving it.
A friend had an encounter with WKS about 5 years ago at a design showroom at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. The Mart is a massive building mostly devoted to wholesale interior design showrooms. It was owned by the Kennedys for over 50 years until they sold it in the late 90s. WKS was shopping in the showroom my friend manages and asked for a discount, giving as his reason that "my family owns the building." The only problem (besides the fact that as a physician and a trust fund brat, he didn't need a discount) is that he was angling for a discount long after his family sold the Mart.
How did your friend handle it, R130? What an entitled asshole he is.
He had another allegation of inappropriate sexual behavior with another woman about five or six years ago. I don't recall what happened with that. Around the time the trial in Florida was going on, Spy Magazine published a "list" of other alleged inappropriate sexual encounters. It was over 20 years ago, so the details have faded in my memory. The women weren't identified, but there were descriptions of the situations and some really did sound like assaults. Whatever became of these? Well, Spy reported that the women involved were from wealthy, well-to-do, and well-known families who wouldn't want their daughters' names dragged into anything.

He probably chose them for that reason.
His cousin (I forget his name but he was the one who got the bright idea to ski backwards and died after he hit a tree) had gotten in trouble for boffing his 14 year old baby sitter, but her family owned a huge ambulance company and squashed the story and the charges as to keep her name out of the paper.
" My mother went on two dates with a "ridiculously charming and handsome" Ted Bundy at the University of Washington in Seattle just weeks before he came calling on the sorority."
The Florida sorority? Yeah, that wouldn't be possible. Bundy had just escaped from a Colorado jail where he'd been for a couple of years.
O.J. Simpson, a few times, both "before" and "after".
As the previous poster said, he was arrogant and obnoxious at best. "After" he seemed to relish in and thoroughly enjoy his notoriety, as if murdering his wife and her friend was the best thing he ever did.
Patty Hearst, a few times... sweet and quiet.
Jessica Hahn, the one who brought down the Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker empire. air-head bimbo.
During the optioning, development and making of GOODFELLAS, the real Henry Hill would call our offices many times a day, propositioning anyone who would talk to him. (We would only pick up his call for a laugh.) He was always beyond wasted, slurring and pathetic, inviting young women to shit and piss on him. It was weird to see the movie and to imagine that he had ever been respected by anyone, anyplace.
Some strange stories in this thread.
Right after the OJ trial. My friends and I saw OJ outside a restaurant in Studio City. We were in a car stopped at the light. As soon as we spotted him, we all automatically started yelling,"Murderer!"
Thank goodness the light changed to green and we sped off.
The verbal barrage totally startled him.
As part of my first publishing job in the very early 90s, I spent the day helping Patty Hearst sign copies of her book for sale at San Simeon. They'd never wanted it there before, but changed their mind, and wanted signed copies. She said sure, why not 1000, not realizing what that would entail. Anyway, she was nice to me, thoroughly imperious with everyone else, including VPs who showed up trying to improve my technique for opening the book to the title page for her signature ("We're doing JUST FINE, thank you, LEAVE US ALONE," she barked.)
I asked her how she liked the movie they made from the book, and she said she did, but found it very surreal. Absolutely hates "Patty," and forwarded instructions that her name is PATRICIA.
"Oh my God. I'm back. I'm home. All the time, it was... We finally really did it ... You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!"
We are switching to the new platform for The DataLounge this weekend. All of our mobile users have been using it for over a week and all first time users have been using it for about a month - which adds up to well over one million users. So we're ready to end this phase of the testing and move everybody to the new site. (more)
And yes, we've changed the look and some of how it operates.
Yes, we know you just *hate* it in well in advance.
Yes, we know we suck.
Yes, we are the biggest suckers that ever sucked.
But it was time for a change and with the huge shift to mobile it was long overdue. We've taken this opportunity not only to update the look but also make major changes under the hood (or "bonnet" if you're either British or pretentious or both). And we have to prepare for 2016 - a presidential election year where we can normally expect to see a 60% jump in traffic (yes, we've seen 5 presidential elections so far…Christ we're old).
The site has a bunch - nay, plethora - of new features which will make the site more usable: better search, the ability to ignore posters and threads, see link previews, to pick up a thread where you left off, spam and malware filtering and more.
If you want you can go explore and see for yourself, Click here.
And while running the tests we've noticed two interesting reactions to the new system - people are spending more time on the site and more people that come stay around longer and look at more stuff. Both good things. Yay!
Possibly we've not slain all the dragons and there will be issues that come up during the switchover. There's a help button in the lower right hand corner of the page which you can use to send us bug reports.
Please include as much information about the hardware (PC, Mac, Tablet, Phone etc), operating system (Windows, Mac OS, Android, iOS etc) and browser (Chrome, Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer etc) that you are using as possible to help us replicate and fix the problem.
Please note that complaints about colors, fonts, icons and the like are not "bugs" - they are design choices that we've made and we expect one or two cases of world-class bitching. But they won't actually cause headaches, scurvy, heart attacks, Restless Leg Syndrome, Morgellon's Disease or the vapors (but have your smelling salts at hand just in case).
Talking to DataLounge servers. Please wait a moment...
