6:48 p.m. | Updated Al Jazeera on Wednesday completed a deal to take over Current TV, the low-rated cable channel that was founded by Al Gore and his business partners seven years ago.
Current will provide the pan-Arab news giant with something it has sought for years: a pathway into American living rooms. Current is available in about 60 million of the 100 million homes in the United States with cable or satellite service.
Current is available in about 60 million of the 100 million homes in the United States with cable or satellite service.
That may be true, but it isn't watched by 1% of those 60 million homes. It isn't even watched by 0.5%
And there's no guarantee the cable systems will carry the channel once it becomes Al-Jazeera.
Time Warner has already pulled Current down:
And what happens to Jennifer Granholm, Eliot Spitzer, etc? Are they still under contract to these people?
God forbid we ever get to hear another point of view.
And what happens to Jennifer Granholm, Eliot Spitzer, etc? Are they still under contract to these people?
It doesn't sound that way. According to OP's link:
Al Jazeera plans to shut Current and start an English-language channel, which will be available in more than 40 million homes, with newscasts emanating from both New York and Doha, Qatar.
Damn, I didn't realize how dismal Current TV's ratings were. I find it baffling that the news junkie audience doesn't gravitate towards any of their programming even though I should know better.
Jennifer Granholm had apparently been so pessimistic about Current's future that she was only signing three-month contracts anyway.
In NYC, Time Warner has been carrying Al Jazeera for over a year on the RISE channel (93 or so).
They took down Current and Ovation on January 1 - it was about costs (too few viewers, too much to carry the channel) and had nothing to do with the Al Jazeera take over.
I hope Jennifer Granholm gets offered some sort of gig at MSNBC.
Here comes the next Ground Zero mosque protest. Demands will be made for Comcast not to carry the network, and Comcast with cave.
If you haven't watched AJTV, it's better than MSNBCBSFOXNEWS in that it doesn't "toe the party line" and actually calls out the government on bullshit. Like Hillary being in a plane crash.
Which is why it'll be banned, r11. It won't go through. America is anti-Arab. They are specifically anti-Al Jazeera, which the Bush Administration continuously called out by name for propagandizing for terrorists in the Middle East, getting our soldiers killed. Don't start going off on whether that's true or not. You're preaching to the choir. The fact remains that the average American is not going to stand for this network being broadcast nationally in the United States.
Al Jazeera is owned by the Qatar government.
it doesn't "toe the party line" and actually calls out the government on bullshit.
Calls out the US government, specifically. You'll never hear a peep on there about the Qatari government.
Not that I care; I welcome Al Jazeera to my cable lineup, fingers crossed.
This is as good a place as any to bitch about people who pronounce Qatar as "Cutter" or "Gutter", thinking they're approximating some variety of Arabic. People I know who work there say the locals just pronounce it "Catarrh."
TERRORISTS IN YOUR LIVING ROOM!
I liked Current TV when it was seemingly the one-man shop of Brett Erlich.
I hope Eliot Spitzer finds another home. IMO he's just what TV needs. He's great.
Will it be all news all the time?
Or other things as well?
Which is why it'll be banned
Excuse me? What about that part of the First Amendment "Congress shall make no abridging..." I will love the lesson in constitutional law tea baggers are going to be getting.
Al Jazeera created BeIN sport which shows soccer from most the major leagues in Europe except England's. Two channels, one in English, the other in Spanish are shown in the U.S.
Excuse me? What about that part of the First Amendment "Congress shall make no abridging..."
Nobody's saying Congress is going to ban Al Jazeera America. The idea is that no cable system will want to carry it for fear of consumer backlash against an "Arab" network.
Comcast just pulled the plug.
Excuse me? What about that part of the First Amendment "Congress shall make no abridging..." I will love the lesson in constitutional law tea baggers are going to be getting.
Oh, you are such a naive little asshat.
You can't shout fire in a crowded room, and you can't threaten the president's life. The First Amendment is a farce. Apparently, you aren't aware of this thing called the "Red scare," not to mention our no-fly list, and the fact that all our shit is wiretapped. Have you heard of this site called Wikileaks by any chance? Indefinite detainment? The Constitution is meaningless today. The US government would run Al Jazeera out of business. Al Jazeera cut down on its 2008 presidential election coverage thanks to pressure by the US government.
Nobody's saying Congress is going to ban Al Jazeera America. The idea is that no cable system will want to carry it for fear of consumer backlash against an "Arab" network.
Which is what happened, and is the reason why it's no longer happening now.
Arabs are not welcome in the United States.
Oh, you are such a naive little asshat
Well thank you for your early morning venom, sir. May I ask why you like indulging in typical tea bagger behavior? (i.e. couldn't be civil to save their lives) I always thought this typified small-minded, uneducated people.
I love Stephanie Miller and her crew. Their drunken John Boener imitation is spot on.
Joy Behar just can't catch a break. First she loses her HLN gig. Now this.
The Young Turks and Eliot Spritzer are outstanding too.
I hope they all find new homes soon!
One other thing. Stephanie Miller has been on for almost 3 hours and they are not discussing this at all. One caller did ask Stephanie where she was going next as she hung up, but Steph didn't discuss it. They must've been told not to discuss anything.
Time Warner pulled Current after midnight.
I had to listen to Stephanie's show on an older AM radio!
I will miss some of the shows, but I knew something was going on because they took off most of the talk shows over the Christmas/New Year break.
I will miss some of the shows, but I knew something was going on because they took off most of the talk shows over the Christmas/New Year break.
Wow. Maybe the talk show hosts were on break too, did you ever think of that?
Jennifer Granholm just announced that she is leaving Current TV. How long before Elliot Spitzer, Joy Behar, and Cenk Uyger follow suit?
Aw I'm gonna watching their election coverage, Jennifer G., Joy and Jodie's girlfriend. Damnmit, can't they keep their shows? Are they afraid of being tagged with being an Al Jazeera program?
Forget Jenifer, Eliott and Joy I am more concerned over what will happen to the adorable and funny Brett Erlich. Erlich has worked on many of the current shows and is currently on Granholm's ahow.
He is more than eye candy he is a talent!
So if I'm following this correctly, Al-Jazeera bought Current literally for the channel, not for any of its content and not for the Current name? Sucks for them that cable providers are now dropping the channel fast.
R28, I enjoyed the SM show during the election season, but wow, what a difference. I quickly soured on the three of them, so I haven't tuned in, but you don't have to listen on the AM dial. You can go to iheartradio and either listen online or download the app.
Time Warner [...] took down Current and Ovation on January 1 - it was about costs (too few viewers, too much to carry the channel) and had nothing to do with the Al Jazeera take over.
Not where I am (Central NY State). Ovation was dropped at the new year but Current was still running until after this news came down yesterday.
I love Stephanie Miller and enjoyed catching her simulcast on Current when I happened to be home at those hours on weekdays. I listen to her on an Ithaca AM radio station in my car, which I can only pick up depending on the weather. (Yeah, I know, I need satellite radio). I hardly ever watched Current otherwise, even though I like Granholm and love John Fugelsang, who has, or had, a weekly show.
I'll probably miss Ovation more--they ran some good musicals and documentaries about pop music, the weirdly compelling UK "Antiques Roadshow," and some good niche movies that wouldn't otherwise be on cable. But I get that it is probably one of the lowest-rated cable networks out there.
I hear Time Warner is considering dropping IFC, too. That would be really bad news.
Not only did he push though the sale before the tax rate went up, he sold it to an anti American propaganda source that is paid for by Arab oil money,
Aljazera news is good, I use the app.
oops, just noticed my missing word at r31.
Aw I'm gonna MISS watching their election coverage, Jennifer G., Joy and Jodie's girlfriend. Damnmit, can't they keep their shows? Are they afraid of being tagged with being an Al Jazeera program?
What made you sour on them r34?
Get that $ Al! Werk!
Not one cable company in the south will carry it, nor in most of the west...Texas...no fucking way. Most of the states is this shitty country are red states and none of them will stand for this "propaganda". They have no problem with Faux Noise propaganda however.
Crony Leftist Al Gore Made $70 Million Off of Current TV's Sale to Al Jazeera
Al Gore’s Current TV was never popular with viewers, but it was a hit where it counted: with cable and satellite providers. When he co-founded the channel in 2005, Mr. Gore managed to get the channel piped into tens of millions of households — a huge number for an untested network — through a combination of personal lobbying and arm-twisting of industry giants.
He called on those skills again after deciding in December to sell Current TV to Al Jazeera for $500 million. To preserve the deal — and the estimated $100 million he would personally receive — he went to some of those same distributors, who were looking for an excuse to drop the low-rated channel, and reminded them that their contracts with Current TV called it a news channel. Were the distributors going to say that an American version of Al Jazeera didn’t qualify, possibly invoking ugly stereotypes of the Middle Eastern news giant?
“The lawyers for the carriers couldn’t find their way around it,” said a person briefed on the negotiations who described them on condition of anonymity[...]
Current was born out of Newsworld International, a niche channel that Mr. Gore and his business partners bought in 2004 for an undisclosed sum. Newsworld’s biggest distributor at the time was DirecTV, which sold television service to 20 million homes, and the man about to become the controlling shareholder of DirecTV was none other than Rupert Murdoch, the chief executive of News Corporation.
In a meeting in New York, Mr. Gore leaned on Mr. Murdoch for an extended contract with a lucrative per-subscriber fee.
Mr. Gore asserted that DirecTV should carry a “diverse set of news sources.”
The resulting contract guaranteed Current roughly 10 cents per subscriber per month and helped Mr. Gore secure the financing he needed to acquire Newsworld. It also laid the groundwork for similar extensions with smaller distributors.
That’s why Current, despite having one of the puniest audiences of any widely distributed cable channel, was able to post annual revenue of about $100 million.
Bottom line: Al Gore business is the business of political-connections intimidation that even makes Rupert Murdoch shake in his shoes. It wasn't business logic that caused Murdoch to cut a multi-million dollar deal with Gore,
I love it, R37!
We have tolerated enough fake patriotic shit from all three cable-news programmers -- CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC -- at numerous points since at least George W. Bush was president. Let's have more exposure to the world outside the United States which does not limit us to what those cable-news programmers and broadcast networks -- ABC, CBS, and NBC -- "approve" for their viewing audiences.
Racist much, R37?
So it's fine that Australian money can own tons of media outlets where they push the neocon agenda, but a media outlet that prides itself on being what CNN used to be, shouldn't be allowed to air in the US?
Most Americans are such brainwashed idiots.
You're too ignorant to let go of the fact that it was the Bush admin. who portrayed Al Jazeera as some "terrorist" network. Just another lie told by them.
Yes, a network so bad that during the war, the US networks were using tAJ's feed, and without permission.
Al Gore's being called a hypocrite? He's never not been a capitalist. Why do freepers have the mistaken idea that he wasn't?
Freepers tend to warp reality.
"Anti-Muslim violence spiralling out of control in America"
That's a current headline at Al Jazeera. As an American, I call bullshit. Had they written "anti-Muslim rhetoric spiralling out of control," I would have said they had an arguable position. But the current headline is hysterical overstatement. If you check the "'Hate crime' on cards for Iraqi woman killed in US" inset on the page, that has to do with an family murder in California that the killer staged (badly) as a hate crime.
This is the sort of bullshit we deride Fox News for. It shouldn't get a pass just because it's Arab bullshit instead of American bullshit.
Here's Al-Jazeera's biggest star on homosexuals:
The schools of thought disagree about the punishment. [...]Some say we should throw them from a high place, like God did with the people of Sodom. Some say we should burn them, and so on. There is disagreement...The important thing is to treat this act as a crime.
Please continue to dribble on about "another perspective" and "brainwashed Americans". It's highly amusing.
Why are gays (and guilty white liberals in general) so muslim-friendly? That's one of the most violently homophobic religion on earth! Yet you people are sooo welcoming of a barbaric, medieval culture who believe you should be stoned to death for your turn-ons. A culture where people have violent, murderous riots over the tiniest things that poke fun at this woman-beating death cult. And you idiots think that's something America should EMBRACE???
And why is everyone assuming that A-J is an honest network? They're just going to tell nothing but pro-islam bullshit in which muslims are always the good guys and white Americans are always the bad ones. Common sense dictates that.
Before the usual tired cliches of calling me a "Freeper," keep in mind I voted for Obama twice. But Islam's own track record proves it is not something to be trusted or catered to in any way. So please, folks, get your heads out of Arab asses.
It's status-jockeying, R49. Reflexively supporting whoever the cultural left says is above reproach is how they differentiate themselves from flyover fundies. Never mind that their extremists are worse than ours. Fundie Christians are horrible, but they generally won't firebomb the offices of a magazine that tells a Jesus joke.
The idiot social justice bloggers on Tumblr fall all over themselves fetishizing hijabis while saying things about Christians they'd never have the guts to say to Muslims.
ps. I vote Dem too.
The idiot social justice bloggers on Tumblr fall all over themselves fetishizing hijabis
Even better than that - the half-witted "feminists" who frequent ONTD won't even have have a bad word said about [italic]burqas[/italic]!
Yes, the libfems are included among the social justice types I spoke of. Not that there is anything wrong with seeking social justice, but the online SJ cabal is mostly about liberals impressing other liberals with how enlightened they are.
That's how the oppression totem pole is right now. I've seen reports of the British Socialist Workers' Party asking English women to wear hijabs to appease their Muslim members.
R48 is quoting out of context. I've never seen any anti gay promotion via AlJazeera. I've used the news app for a few years.
Why don't we look at the NyDaily news, now there is some propaganda.
where will stephanie miller go???
The "half-witted" feminists on ONTD tend to be in the 13-24 year old age range.
There are a lot of Muslim girls on ONTD and Tumblr. I'm familiar with them through soccer blogs. The ones in Western Europe generally adopt completely western attitudes, though they're understandably offended if someone makes assumptions about cultural or religious matters or the Palestinian problem. The girls in the Middle East are in an alternate reality. Very infantile and child-like.
I've nothing to back this up, but I have a feeling that Spitzer may be invited to stay. He's a brilliant commentator, a name, and had the only show on Current that regularly attracted more than 100k viewers. Although I can see how hitching his wagon to Al Jazeera may not be in his best interest if he's looking to run for office again.
I for one will really miss The Young Turks and will make it a point to watch it online. Where I used to think Cenk Uygur came off as a frat-boy-turned-union-boss blowhard, lately he's been on fire, quite eloquent in calling Obama on his blue dog Democrat bs.
It's from Al Jazeera Arabic, r53.
Of course they know they wouldn't get awy with this shit on their English-language channel - but it still shows the mindset of the people behind this.
I hope they don't mess with the MSNBC line-up now there's a few unemployed TV personalities out there. On the bright side, any of their stars would be a wonderful replacement for Piers Morgan and Anderson Cooper at CNN.
Why don't we learn from Europe's mistake in pandering to Mu-slime culture? It's done Europe ZERO good of any kind and only harmed them. Because the muslims they enable/appease (admittedly far more radical & violent than American muslims) do nothing but cause trouble and refuse to assimilate into Western cultural parameters. I don't want this same turbulent muslim problem to happen in America, even though our muslims are clearly far better behaved (fanatical European muslims know that we "ugly yanks" won't tolerate their demanding, irrational bullshit).
It's funny, that continent of elitist, George-Galloway-type "champagne socialists" were so busy spending many years fanatically hating on Americans for their own paranoid, stereotypical projections, that they failed to notice the REAL enemy - Islam. Which subverted them, makes outrageous cultural demands of them, and now outbreed them right under their noses while they were soooo busy being horrified by Americans. In a few generations, Europe will be doomed to dhimmitude with their new muslim majority, who will eventually get into major positions of power through their sheer breeding numbers.
As much schadenfreude as I feel about Zeropean PC-pussy fuckbags getting steamrolled by their new Islam masters they like to blow (it really couldn't have happened to a better continent of hypocritical bigoted, elitist, alcoholic pigs), I really, really don't want the same thing to happen in America. Call me racist or Islamophobic if you want, but I don't want this psychotic, barbaric, despicable religious culture introduced to American society. We have enough problems without ANOTHER primitive religious pathology to deal with. And Islam's bloodthirsty, evil, homosexual-torturing, woman-brutalizing culture really has truly earned the bigotry against them.
Why are gays (and guilty white liberals in general) so muslim-friendly?
Oh, god, the troll's back. F&F it immediately. I love when the Freeps make it so damn easy!
r49/r50/r51/r52/r55/r59 = talking to herself. Nice IP play, honey. F&F!
ps. I vote Dem too.
Yeah, sure you do, honey.
r50 doesn't capitalize words like r49. Hmm, wonder why...
Al Gore is a hypocrit.
r48 posts no source. Haha. Trollin, trollin, trollin...
r48's quote comes from a far Right blog. F&F
I guess the people shitting on AJE were cool with the US media pushing the lies of the government, allowing govt officials to lie to you without questioning those lies and pushing for a false war leading to hundreds of thousands of people being killed including thousands of Americans, but AJE is the one with the "propaganda."
Keep fighting to stay stupid.
No doubt this troll is quite the productive member of society, eh?
When people have time to post some long-winded, bigoted screed which includes some incredibly *clever* derogatory derivation of a word, you just know they're captains of industry.
Al Jazeera is a great news source, please, what is all this negativity? They are light years ahead of FauxNews.
Go continue to stick your head in the sand, R65, you rotten idiot. The fact is: MUSLIME LOATHE HOMOSEXUALS AND COMMIT EXTREME VIOLENCE AGAINST THEM! What part of that concept do you stupid guilty-white-liberal queens not understand? Muslime are every bit as detestable as our evanglical Christians and both need to be exterminated.
So fuck you, you Uncle-Tom, for supporting a religion as violently homophobic as MU-SLIMES!!!! I'll bet you're one of those Eurotrash, fanatically American-hating, islam-cocksuckers TRAITORS TO THE WEST that I've been complaining about for years.
GO SUCK SOME MORE ISLAM COCK, YOU FILTHY DHIMMI PC PIECE OF SHIT EUROTRASH ISLAM SLAVE!!!!!!
Here's a quote from that noted neocon website, Queerty:
Al Jazeera’s English Network Is Much Gay-Friendlier Than Its Arabic Channel. Duh
How dare they slime the fabulous Al Jazeera!
Go rim some more violently homophobic, barbaric Islam swarthy assholes, R67.
If you like that ultra-violent homophobic culture, then you are simply the "house nigger" of homosexuals. Fuck you Islam-blowing elitist, champange-socialist, MUSLIM-RIMMING PIGS!!!!!!
Any homosexual who supports that Islam death-cult is a filthy traitor who deserves to die the most agonizing AIDS death a human body could possibly endure. Treacherous, PC pigs who automatically assume that non-white people are poor little victimized saints who can do no wrong. You guilty white PC liberals are some of the most disgusting, patronizing, arrogant racists on earth.
I was wondering when the Freepers would come in and start bashing Muslims.
Look, Islam is just as violently homophobic and brimming with bloodthirsty violence against homosexuals as the most fanatical Christianity. Period! No matter how much woman-beating, anti-civil rights, oppresive, homosexual-hanging mid-eastern dick you gay-house-nigger, guilty-white-extremist-liberals like to suck. Islam is a violent, brutal, gay-hating culture which has NEVER peacefully co-existed with other cultures. Whether champange-socialist, self-righteous, ultra-leftists like it or not, they're catering to a culture of hate-filled, radically homophobic animals WHO WISH US DEAD! You dumb, PC idiots.
Yep, the anti-gay, anti-Muslim freepers are in full swing.
Can't wait for webbie to delete the proud Freeptards who stink up our threads.

Seriously? Linking to Queerty proves I'm a freeper? If that's your idea of a reasonable deduction, anything and everything you post should be ignored.

well, if you put it hat way...
Time Warner dropped it, any idea where I can see their programs, until Current is officially dead?
The leftist crony Al Gore is now richer than the confused crony, Mitt "my pollster said I was going to win" Romney.
Gore left office with a net worth of $1.9 million and after 12 years is now worth $300 million.
With an estimated $100 million gross profit from the sale of his Current TV to pan-Arab broadcaster Al-Jazeera, Gore is now worth more than $300 million, according to an estimate from Forbes.com.
That puts his net worth well ahead of that of former presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who has an estimated fortune of $230 million.
Gore's wealth accumulation began soon after he left the White House in 2001. Apple (AAPL) tapped him in 2003 to serve on its board, and the former vice president held more than 100,000 shares and options in the tech company as of Dec. 17, according to a regulatory filing. That makes Gore's stake worth more than $56 million, based on Apple's recent trading price.
Google hired Gore to serve as a senior adviser on environmental issues in 2001, a role he held for three years. He doesn't have a formal financial relationship with the company currently, Forbes.com reports.
Gore also has his hand in a global investment company called Generation Investment Management, which he founded in 2004 with ex-Goldman Sachs (GS +0.95%) executive David Blood. Together, Blood and Gore have reportedly built a company with assets under management of more than $6 billion.
The truth is, serving in the White House often proves beneficial to a person's financial health.
Freeper bumps thread. Great.
Who's the freeper?
R37, if you're worried about Arab ownership of American media, please boycott Fox News. Everyone knows its largest shareholder is Australian Rupert Murdoch (proving, along with Russell Crowe, that if anyone can be bigger assholes than Americans, it's Aussies). But its second largest shareholder is Saudi prince Prince Alwaleed bin Talal. Saudi Arabia is the home of the most radical Islamists, like Osama Bin Laden. Qatar, on the other hand, is home to the largest US military base in the Middle East, and for good or evil the place from which we launched two of our last three wars.
Al Jazeera is more hated in the Arab world and Israel than in the US, because their goal is to outdo the BBC in investigative reporting. The USA is not the only nation with a government that hates having its ugly side exposed.
When it came to making a choice between making money and preserving one of the very few progressive outlets on cable TV, Al Gore chose making money.
Saudi Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal and News Corp. own the Rotana Group, which has a Arabic-language news service. Jon Stewart has more:
I'm confused. Are you attacking Gore, or defending him?
Since he is the high prince of socialism, I assume you are defending.
r88, you've been F&F. You'll be out of here in no time. Hope you had you fun while it lasted.
I can't tell who is hating here!
Is Gore evil for selling to Al Jazzera, or for making $70M, or what?
It doesn't matter- Gore used his position as former VP to make $250M+ over the last 12 years by selling his soul, and selling out "the little people" in the process.
He's a fucking hack, and I wouldn't believe a word he uttered. May he rot in hell, alongside Bush, Bush2 and Clinton.
