George Bush being a college cheerleader

President Bush was a cheerleader in college and I have never understood this. Bush thinks of himself as a masculine man and I don't think he has ever flirted with homosexuality. Weren't male cheerleaders always regarded as gay or at least feminine? Weren't they teased by the hetero world for this? Why would Bush want to be a cheerleader? It seems weird and incongrous.

• He was a Yale cheerleader because his father was. If you think he's gay, then GWHB must be too.

• I agree with you R12. I just don't personally see it as manly. That said I wish the sterotypes would stop. I'm at fault with this too I guess. Anyway, I doubt he was very good. Too much of a stiff shirt for the flexibility required.

I don't know if he played sports in H.S, but I'm betting that's it and he simply had to be involved. Cheerleading back then didn't involve the athleticism it does now with all of the lifting and gymnastics that university squads do. They have their own competitions that are pretty rigorous.

• It used to be very manly to be a cheerleader - in fact, you were considered the "real" cheer leader while the woman were basically these idiots you paraded around. Lots of guys wanted to be cheerleaders but their voices weren't deep enough or they didn't have the body for it (LOTS of heavy lifting).

• No cheer leaders or yell leaders were not exclusively male, especially up until the 60s. I recall My Three Sons where Ernie was a yell leader.
