Why only 1 Oscar tie in my lifetime ...?

I can only recall one Oscar tie and that is the 1968 one when rightly Katharine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand both won. I wonder how often does a tie almost happen? What other ties would you have liked? 1950 - Bette AND Gloria - who were seen as old timers then and not as revered then as they are now. 1960 - Deborah Kerr AND Jean Simmons, as the culmination of their great years, both were very big stars indeed in the 50s and played opposite all the great names, their careers would tail off in the 60s as they got older and newer names arrived ... (Taylor deserved her win in 1966, but not in 1960). 1976 - De Niro for Taxi Driver + Finch. I can't say 1954 as I would have wanted Judy to win on her own for A Star Is Born. Grace won for looking dowdy in a cardigan. Her perfirmance and the film (The Country Girl) do not hold up. 2006 - Julie Christie AND Cotillard as Piaf. It would have been great if Julie had won 40 years after her first win. (I think only Kate Hepburn has such a distance between Best Actress wins). 1980 - Romy Schneider for DEATH WATCH, AND Sissy Spaceck. Europan actress Schneider is astounding in Death Watch (Le Mort en Direct) two years before she died in 1982, I would let her share with Sissy's Coal Miner's Daughter.

1977 or 1978 - Ingrid Bergman AND Liv Ullmann for their amazing teamwork in AUTUMN SONATA, it would be impossible to single out either one.
I love Faye Dunaway as Evelyn Mulwray in Chinatown. I would have tied her with Burstyn's Alice, in 1974.
1962: Lee Remick for Days of Wine & Roses, to tie with Bancroft. 1961: Natalie Wood for Splendor in the Grass, tie with Sophia Loren.
I read here that, according to the rules, it is very difficult to get a tie somehow.
Viola Davis, Rooney Mara and Michelle Williams and I should have tied for the Oscar last year.

OP, there was one other tie, likely before your lifetime, in 1932 when both Fredric March ("Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde") and Wallace Beery ("The Champ") bested the only other nominee, Alfred Lunt ("The Guardsman"). It would've been nice if Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift had tied for their 1951 performances in "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "A Place in the Sun" respectively. Those two were the hottest young actors around and turned in revelatory performances, ushering in a new style of acting. The eventual winner, Humphrey Bogart for his iconic performance in "The African Queen" was good but not spectacular IMO. I also would've liked to have seen a tie in '83 with Streep ("Sophie's Choice") and Lange ("Frances"). Both delivered exceptional, again revelatory, performances that stood apart from the rest of the pack.

Wallace Beery and Frederick March tied for Best Actor in 1931-32. The rules were different, then - actors tied if they came within three votes of each other. Beery had one less vote than March, so they both got the prize.
Nicholas Cage won a well deserved Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas (back in the days when Cage was actually good). I wish it could have been shared with Sean Penn for Dead Man Walking, which was the role of his career.
Both Sissy Spacek for Coal Miner's Daughter and Mary Tyler Moore for Ordinary People.

R17, I believe you meant Kramer Vs Kramer, not Tootsie. I only point it out because I personally would have liked it if Hoffman had indeed won for Tootsie, or tied with Ben Kingsley that year (1982).

Bette Davis and Gloria Swanson should have tied for their equally brilliant performances. Davis may have won if her co-star Anne Baxter had been nominated in the supporting category, and not the best actress category.
As someone else noted NO ONE voted for Anne Baxter over Bette. Guess I'm in the minority but I think Judy Holliday deserved her Oscar...

1954 - Marlon Brando AND James Mason for his towering performance as Norman Maine and for playing opposite Judy which several others turned down. Its still a brilliant performance now. I am not that gone on Brando actually though of course his was an astounding performance too. 1955 - James Dean AND Ernest Borgnine, Borg was soon back playing heavies, whereas Dean became the icon of a whole generation with that new style of acting. Good call too on Clift and Brando for 1951. Bogie was old hat by then.
Streisand's transparent pant suit for the Oscars is mind-blowingly awful. Was it a Theadora Van Runkle creation ?
