The Master: A pretentious film critic's wet dream...

...but to most normal people, a total fucking piece of shit at worst, or just a goddamn snooze fest at best. What are films of the past that also fit that description?

• Interesting. I didn't hate The Master (the lush score and gorgeous cinematography held my interest) but I do think it is much ado about nothing: PT Anderson is a great director, but he's a crap writer, and this tale of two men in love but not willing to "go there" was tired and silly. On the other hand, I adore Black Swan, The English Patient and Last Year Marienbad.

• Black Swan was AWFUL. I couldn't believe something so awful, and an actress so hammy, was getting that kind of acclaim.

• We went to see "In The Bedroom" due to the near rapturous acclaim this film received upon release. When this ambien finished working almost everyone in the theater looked at each other like what was the big deal. An absolute snooze.

• Oh, yes, Rachel Getting Married. Awful, unbelievably awful. A friend and I were the only ones in the theater when we saw it and we laughed at and mocked the film the whole time.

• "pretentious film critic" "Someone didn't go to college, huh?" There are films that only critics love that the public shuns. Some of these films are overlooked because they are too complicated -- others because they simply suck. Manohla Dargis of the New York Times is one of the perverse film critic with a fetish for difficult, nigh unwatchable films. Her championing of the nutty, precious (and borderline misogynist) Holy Motors is a prime example.

• Black Swan doesn't fit the criteria. You may not like it, but a lot of people did. The English Patient and Tree of Life are both excellent examples.

• Melancholia is an excellent film, with an out-of-this-world performance by Dunst. If anything, that movie is completely underrated. Lost in Translation is very good, despite ScarJo. The English Patient is wonderful, even if some elements are a bit too manipulative. But the good parts outweigh the flaws, plus Binoche and Fiennes are superb in it. Ironweed comes with the most overlooked performance of Streep's storied career. Some of her acting in this film is earth shattering. OT: almost every Tarantino movie falls into OP's category, as do many of Clooney's movies. Up in the Air... yawn. I agree with Eyes Wide Shut, and almost every movie starring Kidman to which critics have a wank-fest. Titanic was praised at the time, so it needs to be included. Horrible, pedestrian script, plus Leo and Kathy Bates were awful in it. Especially Bates, whom I normally love. I cared nothing for Walk the Line, and that one was praised as well. That's all.

• I liked it, thought it was beautiful and took me to a strange place most movies don't even attempt to reach. Not my favorite movie, but worth the price of admission.

• People love Tarantino's movies, R30. Likewise, Walk the Line was fairly popular among "normal people." The OP is talking about movies that critics love, but that the average moviegoer would find uninteresting or unlikeable. It's not about you personally disagreeing about a critically well-received movie.

• Any Jarmusch film - I sat all the way through [italic]Stranger than Paradise[/italic] even though about 80% of the audience walked out. I suspect people claiming to like his movies think they're supposed to like his stuff, so they pretend they do too.

• Streep Troll, sorry, but anybody who says Dunst's performance in Melancholia is "out of this world" is whack. Taking aside the fact that I actively loathed this film, I fail to see what was so great about such a dull, perfunctory performance. Horrible, just plain horrible.

• Who likes Tarantino's movies? Dumb hipsters with no taste? No one else likes them.

• I also hated "Inception" and "Black Swan". Loved "Tree of Life".

• No one likes Tarantino movies? Have any of you ever met a straight man under 50? Resevoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, and Inglorious Basterds are all extremely popular with them. Although, The English Patient has a much higher box office gross that I thought it did, so The Streep Troll is correct on that one.
