India: Is There Anything to Recommend?

I've always wanted to vist India since I read Forster's A Passage to India at college. But the more I read about the country, the more revolted I become. I've just finished reading "Behind the Beautiful Forevers" about the Indian slums which makes you feel like India is living in the Middle Ages with the grinding, hopeless poverty and a caste system that makes slavery look benign by comparison. Then there is the story of a 23 yer old woman gang raped on a bus, revealing appalling misogyny by the police and the courts who pressure women to drop rape allegations. Does anyone ave eperiences travelling in India? It sounds like hell on earth.
