Matt Damon on U.S. politics: ‘We’re genuinely f*cked’ on long-term issues
Friday, December 28, 2012
Hollywood star Matt Damon recently told Playboy he has little hope that Washington can address long-term environmental issues like using hydraulic fracturing to extract natural gas.
“We’re at a point where politicians don’t really get any benefit from engaging with long-term issues,” he told the pornographic magazine, according to Politico. “Instead, it’s all about the next election cycle. Those guys in the House don’t do anything now but run for office.
“So unless they can find some little thing that zips them up a couple of points in the polls, they’re not interested. There’s a consensus among scientists, though, that we face serious long-term issues. They’re saying that unless we engage with those issues, we’re genuinely fucked. The way it looks, we’re going to wait until one of those big issues smacks us.”
Damon is the star of the new movie Promised Land, which dramatizes the environmental controversy surrounding fracking. The process of pumping water and other materials underground at high pressure extracts natural gas, a profitable and environmentally-friendly alternative to coal, but there are concerns the mining technique can contaminate groundwater and produce fatal explosions. Fracking has even been blamed for earthquakes.
“They’re debating about letting it happen in New York now,” Damon explained to Playboy. “To us, the movie was really about American identity. We loved the characters because they felt like real people making the kinds of compromises you have to just to live your life.”
We need to amend the Constitution and make congressional terms 4 years long.
Damon is such a little hypocrite. Several years ago, he was outed for never voting in elections. Yet he always acts angry about our political system all the time. I'm over him.
Didn't Damon vote for Obama in 2008, R3?
Did he have a nude spread in Playboy?
He is right.
Do you think Hefner tapped that ass?
When I am rich I will buy some big ass property in the Andes mountains of South America and form a gay friendly (duh!) self sustainable (gated, surrounded by big walls, or only able to be entered and located through a hidden passage) community. But I am still unsure if it will be a completley off the grid kind of thing where we have no access to the outside world or if we still have internet and TV access. Maybe an intranet would be a nice compromise.
I think someone who is very politically aware could easily become so disgusted with politicians and the political system that voting would seem pointless. In that sense I don't think not voting makes him a hypocrite, it's really perfectly in line with his statements.
As for fracking; natural gas is better than coal yes, but there are much cleaner sources of energy.
Why would Hefner want to tap that ass? That ancient man is apparently only into women, bimbo types.
Damon's body is not what it was back in the 1990's.
In what ways, R11?
Well isn't he kind of fat and pudgy, R12?
He has gained weight for some recent roles (The Informant) but has gotten muscular for others (Elysium, Invictus). Usually, he stays somewhere in between (Hereafter, We Bought a Zoo). He's older now, so he doesn't have the Bourne body any longer.
Damon is an idiot.
he'd be happier if his wife could give him a boy
R9 is a typical fan boi who makes excuses for boys he finds dreamy.
Damon needs to shut his mouth. He's really getting boring.
R18 = imbecile.
I'm actually a big ol' lesbian, R17.
Did he vote for Obama this year?
Supposedly he did, r21.
Regardless of whether he voted this year or in 2008, he's correct. We *are* totally fucked because Republicunt pols who are OWNED by Big Oil will never let substantive change occur in the energy industry. They're quite happy with the status quo, even if that status quo will ultimate lead to massive climate change and rising seas that will swamp many parts of coastal America (and the rest of the world).
[quote]it’s all about the next election cycle. Those guys in the House don’t do anything now but run for office.
Ain't that the fucking truth.
We need to amend the Constitution to ensure publicly-funded elections. No more spending 80% of a term campaigning and fund-raising, candidates should all be on an even playing field with nothing but their record to stand on.
[quote]he told the pornographic magazine
Since when is Playboy a pornographic magazine?
Porn, when did I eat porn?
R23, Big Oil's bed is big enough for everybody. How many Democrats campaign against fracking? Why was Obama's main disagreement with Romney over how much public land should be ceded for the practice? Why has he made no move to close the Haliburton loophole exempting fracking from the Clean Air and Water Acts? In fact, there's been no federal regulation at all.
I don't care one way or another about Matt Damon, but everything he said is 100% correct.
He's completely correct

You can't amend the Constitution without 2/3rds of Congress agreeing. And 2/3rds of Congress will never agree to cut off the teat that feed them (or, rather, their coffers). You need to quit hoping for far-off wild dreams that will never actually transpire, and focus on a REAL potential solution to this dilemma.
This is just Matt Damon's prep work for when he announces he's running for some political office. I don't know if Damon voted for Obama but he spent a hell of a time criticizing him and trying to sabotage his reelection. Obama tried to zing him at the correspondence dinner.
"Referring to one of Damon's less successful projects, Obama joked: "Just the other day, Matt Damon -- I love Matt Damon, love the guy -- Matt Damon said he was disappointed in my performance. Well, Matt, I just saw "The Adjustment Bureau," so ... right back atcha, buddy."

That's all I remember. Really dumb guy who thinks Obama should use dictatorial powers to bring about the one issue he was whining about ... banning tests from schools or something of the sort.
I'm so sick of these boring talking head actors who think that just because they've made a few movies that they know everything about everything. They know fuck-all! I don't care if they are liberal or conservative, they just need to shut their pie-holes.
