Why are there always several high-profile celebrity deaths in the last week of the year?

I had wrongly assumed that the high-profile deaths of 2012 were over and that there wouldn't be anymore until 2013, but I guess not.

• The last big death in 2011 was Kim Jong Il on 12/19. In 2010, it was Teena Marie on 12/27 In 2009, it was Oral Roberts on 12/15 In 2008, it was Eartha Kitt on 12/25 In 2007, Bhutto was assassinated on 12/27. In 2006, Gerald R Ford died on 12/26 and Saddam was executed on 12/29.

• I've heard the death rate tends to fall leading up to the holidays and quickens after they pass - the holidays that is. People hang on...

• I used to work for a hospice service. I asked some people there and they said people sort of hold on until the holidays. Just anecdotal though, no peer reviewed studies.

• We were sad about Teena Marie not because we were big fans, but she was someone we saw around and appreciated.

• Because, dummy, people die everyday and there is not some unwritten rule that "high profile" people have a cutoff date for the year.
