• R9 you are incorrect. It depends on the hotel. In some there are additional staff who set up the trays, and carts and then the waiter just trudges back and forth. When I take this late night early morning shift there is no extra staff. I am it, therefore I keep the whole tip. While it gets busier later in the morning, because I am a solo act and keep all the $$ I am happy to take the occasional shift in a pinch. I then take a shower, go to my regular job and nap at lunch. I don't get much sleep when I do it, but I am a sub, and don't get called often.

Room service pays more than managerial jobs, for the hours worked, when you include the tips. Even in the lesser hotels stories of $100 tips and requests to come back when off shift are normal. Clients aren't always modest when they open the door either. You don't get tip jobs unless you can prove that you are very discreet, and can handle all solicitations.

• OP = Liar. I work in hotels and there is no way in hell you would ever make $500 in a morning. And I used to work at the Four Seasons and I worked at the Peninsula, both top of the line hotels. And no one ever makes anywhere near that. In the first place room service always has a sur charge so few people tip because the servers get that (some places a portion). $200 possibly $300 (if it was a wedding or special event) is possible, but that would be a rare thing.

• Besides, in upscale hotels such as the one OP describes, there is a FREE ROBE in the room which is to be worn when you answer the door to the service tradesmen.
