I'm in heaven with the fact that my thread watcher has threads starring Barrie Youngfellow and Ann Jillian. Can someone start a Marian Mercer thread?

Please refrain from doing this or I will be forced to report you.
Thank you for your otherwise fine website.

I can tell you they love her flaming red nether-regions.

Does anyone else think Barrie's got a comeback in her? I can totally see her doing some small indie project like Peter Fonda did years back with "Ulee's Gold".
by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 22, 2012 12:45 PM |
Wikipedia says she's retired. No more spin arounds by the locker for her.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 23, 2014 5:26 AM |
I was watching what little of IT'S A LIVING there is online; why is Barrie's character so humorless and down in the mouth? She has a heavy touch for a sitcom.
Is this a hallmark of her other work, or just the particular quality she brought to IT'S A LIVING that made the producers keep her through all three incarnations of the show?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 23, 2014 11:30 PM |
She was a great Joan Crawford.

r22 Barrie's character had kids. I'm guessing that the writers needed a mom figure, to be sort of a mother hen to the younger girls.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | November 23, 2014 8:18 AM |
I had to look her up. I remember her from Its a Living and being one of those people who guested a lot. How do people remember her name and have opinions of her? I'm not judging, just curious. She's pretty obscure, I never would have thought of her if it weren't for this sight. Are there scandalis stories about her?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | November 23, 2014 2:58 PM |
Some of us have opinions about this broad because we had to work with her for years.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | November 23, 2014 3:34 PM |
r35, I would imagine many of us in this thread area certain age (mid 40s to mid 50s) who were glued to the television in the 70s and 80s and had a particular fascination for "It's a Living" -- I'll admit, I watched it in all its incarnations, I was teenager at the time. It was either that or "The A-Team"....
by Anonymous | reply 37 | November 23, 2014 3:35 PM |
I'm 44 and remember her ( once I saw her picture). I watched at least two versions of It's a Living. I also watched a lot of 70s sitcom reruns. She was just one of those hey it's that guy actors to me, I never knew her name. I do like that people talk about obscure actors here. Everyone usually obsesses over the big stars.

Barrie @r39 you are no rocket scientist: That is the Wiki list of famous MALE actors from Cleveland.
Barrie Youngfellow is a woman.

A special Family Feud between Dallas and It's a Living. Look at how Susan introduces Barrie and the look Barrie gives her.

Love that commercial R42!
And you have to hand it to Barrie. Even though it's a 30-sec commercial and she's stuck in a chair, she still manages to work in that pivot and a flash of that busted up grill that it took four seasons of IT'S A LIVING for her to finally afford to get fixed.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | December 31, 2014 1:32 AM |
She is married to Allie on-screen hubby from Kate & Allie

Barrie, I was thinking of you today and wondering what you do for income and why you retired so early?
Is there a lot of income from the corporation you've headed since 1978 (per Wikipedia) To Be Announced, Inc.?
And here's a mystery: sources on the internet have Richard Kline married to you in real life from 1974-82, which would have overlapped with your marriage to Michael Mund Youngfellow when you divorced in 1975. Were you and Kline married in real life or just on IT'S A LIVING?
What is your maiden name?
What regional theatre did you do? I wish you were in a show in New York right now, maybe on Broadway or off-Broadway.

R52, I am a committed, serious, trained actress of untold gifts and unplumbed depths, who was sidelined into doing commercial material when the lure of material gain proved to be too great to resist.
I played Joan Crawford in MOVIOLA, years before Ms. Dunaway's portrayal won the heart of the gays and Dataloungers. I hold no resentment toward Ms. Dunaway.
But, if I may modestly submit, I am perhaps best known as Jan on the seminal Witt/Thomas sitcom IT'S A LIVING-- or in the words of the credits "and Barrie Youngfellow as Jan" or my crowning achievement after years of upheaval, "Starring Barrie Youngfellow" in the later seasons when Jan had become so beloved that they didn't have to tell everyone her name in the credits anymore.
The show survived a retooling and retitling when it was network. Then there was a multi-year pause. Then it rose, Phoenix-like, and new episodes were produced for syndication to satisfy the public's rapacious demand. I survived all the cast comings and goings on the show without compromising my art, showing up time and again for all the re-shoots of the opening credits in the Bonaventure elevator. Each week, I tore those scripts apart and put them back together again--whether it's MEDEA or IT'S A LIVING: Episode 4.6, I attack the material that God has blessed me with the opportunity to perform with the same sincerity, the same gravity, the same dedication to craft which (it MUST BE SAID) was not the case with some of my less talented and less dedicated counterparts on the show. There are over 100 half-hours on tape, trapped unreleased in a vault due to music clearance issues, of me giving my all. Half-hours of sitcom gold that could be used to teach students the world over how it's done. It's a great injustice.
In the world of iconic opening credits pivots, my spins around at my locker in each season's of IT'S A LIVING's opening credits--note the subtle variations--are the stuff of Datalounge legend.
I maintain that I was correct in not staying with the series after I shot the pilot of BLOSSOM. Playing Blossom's mother would have dimmed Jan's lustre.
So now tell me, R52: who the freak are you? I cannot use the word you used in your post where you asked me, because I am also the narraratress of the audiobook "The Children's Book of Faith." Though Wikipedia lists me as a retired actress, I am merely holding out for worthy material.
Blessings dear Dataloungers (and you especially R52), Barrie Youngfellow Freed President, To Be Announced, Inc.

Time for this classic American sitcom to be rebooted....with Ms Youngfellow returning in the Marian Mercer role.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | August 24, 2015 3:31 AM |
I can't help but wonder whether Ms. Youngfellow's career were hindered by public confusion over her resemblance to a hypothetical love child of Betty Buckley and Patti Deutsch.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | August 24, 2015 3:50 AM |
Was it in her contract to always be last? Even in that Family Feud clip she is always last.

Ann Jillian sings the solo part:
"We may be less than wealthy
But better yet, We're young and healthy"

The weirdest thing about the show was the restaurant they worked in was supposed to be high class, but originally they wore those weird whorey outfits (halter tops and short shorts).
by Anonymous | reply 65 | August 24, 2015 4:53 AM |
Yes, R64. Ann and her agent tried to make it Ann's show. Singing in the opening credits, playing the showy role of goodtime girl (behind her back I called her "Cassie Cornhole"), and getting her the "And" and her character name as well...copycats! But watch those credits closely.
In Season 1 Miss Jillian has her precious, much negotiated "And" plus her character's name, but she's lost in the middle. Lost. Sandwiched between Wendy Schaal and Paul Kreppel. Can you think of a worse place to be? I can't. So a lot of good all that negotiating did her. I have my "And", my character name, and FINAL POSITION. I'm the last named actor the audience sees and the first one they were talking about. That's called strategy.
In Season 2 (which my most devoted fans know is called MAKING A LIVING), there's no more Susan Sullivan. No more Wendy Schaal. Poor Ann kept the "And" and the "as Cassie", but now she's stuck between Gail Edwards--sweet girl, that Gail--and Paul again. Louise Lasser got top billing that year. She thought she was going to be the star of the show. But from the moment I snatched that salad away from her in the opening credits, I made it clear to her how it was going to be. Louise was here, then she was gone. I knew I had to proceed carefully after that to keep our set from feeling like AND THEN THERE WERE NONE.
In Season 3 it said "Starring Ann Jillian." I agreed to that just to keep the peace, in a weak moment--we'd just found out about Ann's diagnosis. But then, I edged her out. "You'll need time to recuperate," I said. A performance as memorable as any I gave on any actual episode of IT'S A LIVING. After that, no more Ann on my show. I kept my "and", my character name, my final position, and my DIGNITY.
From Season 4 things were as they should have been all along. Starring Barrie Youngfellow. Finally, I felt the producers had come to their senses. Sheryl Lee Ralph and I were different enough, typewise, that I wasn't worried about her; plus I knew I wasn't going to have any competition in the acting department from lovely Gail or Crystal Bernard or Richard Stahl. Marian would admit to being 15 years older than I, so no contest there. Paul did what Paul always does; he did what Paul has always been doing. I incorporated the "energy" I had about him (which had been building steadily across the seasons) into Jan's characterization with a series of underplayed looks. We all have people in our workplace with whom we wish we didn't have to work. So in our scenes together, I gave him the focus he seemed to want so desperately...for a while.
Then they cast Richard Kline as my husband.
Nonetheless, REAL talent always wins out. Anyway, enough with you Dataloungers. I have to go get on my knees with Sam. It's time for us to pray.

Barrie and Sam Freed both seem to have disappeared off the planet - no recent IMDB credits (and old agent/manager contacts), nothing new on Google or Wikipedia, Sam's website is inactive...same with Gail Edwards and Crystal Bernard. And while AnnJillian.com still seems sort of new and it pretends that she's super busy with speaking engagements, but when you Google search for recent public appearances, there aren't any, and in this day and age, even if she appeared at a small town supermarket opening, there would be a writeup. Anything any of these people were appearing in that there were tickets being sold to, there'd be an internet listing somewhere, and there isn't.

I'll ask the DL here too -- was Barrie married to Richard Kline in real life (some internet sources say that)? Or just on IT'S A LIVING in the later seasons?
