How did they stop the post office workers from going postal?
Remember that? We need to find out what worked there and apply it to the rest of the country.
- Seriously, bump. We could learn something.
- R1 forgets the media-Republican slash Perot meme that Post Office are all 500 pounds losers with nothing to teach anyone!
- This is actually an interesting point. I was trying to find out how much spree shooting has increased and due to all those postal shootings it hasn't increased at all.
- .
- I think they implemented programs to make the managers more aware of the postal workers needs have more sensitivity towards them. Supposedly the post office used to have kind of a lump it or leave it attitude which was thought to have contributed to the rage workers were developing.
- The internet.
- If you recall, there were three or four big sprees -- two in CA and two in the midwest. Of the CA shootings, both were crazy guys, but each was set off by a dick manager.
In one of the CA shootings, the surviving postal workers openly applauded the death of the dick manager, although many others were killed and wounded.
Of the midwest spree shooters, both were workers who seemed okay before. Then they got new managers. In those shootings, the managers survived, but what was interesting was that the managers involved in the first shootings were transferred to the other plant and clearly were responsible for the second spree.
The Postal Union had a web site on bullying and said that the people most likely to be bullied were the nice, competent, people well liked by everyone.
And this isn't true only in the post office -- one of my high school classmates was a good competent cop well liked in his department and then a new chief arrived. In the end, this nice cop committed suicide and this was only a few years ago.
In the 2000 era downsizing of the USPS, I don't think managers feel confident enough to bully any more, and of course, all the bad publicity in the 90s didn't help. Occasionally, one of the nut people go off (one in Santa Barbara, maybe five years ago) but that is something else.
- So we need to downsize white men under 30. Ok. Shouldn't all these wars we've been waging have done that?
