- That's not the NRA. The NRA is the National Rifle Association.
This is the NRA's twitter acct
https://twitter.com/NRA
- And this is their Facebook page
https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-NRA/106565656045650%3Fref%3Dts%26fref%3Dts
- Wrong, r2, that's just their wikipedia entry copied to fb. Their own (interactive) page was deleted.
- Idiots, and TONS of them on the DL too. More guns means more insanity.
- Being afraid of guns is about the only thing I don't understand about the left. Why wouldn't a smart person choose to be armed? A violent attack happening near me would end in under 5 seconds, one way or another.
As much as I don't support their single issue based endorsment of mostly Republican candidates, the NRA has integrity when it comes to their their only issue.
Gay%20with%20guns
- Holy crap. Their wall took a beating today. I am shocked they actually shut their FB page down. Incredible. Absolutely incredible.
- This essay by Adam Gopnik explains the "integrity" of the NRA.
"I did a few debates with advocates for the child-killing lobby—sorry, the gun lobby—and, without exception and with a mad vehemence, they told the same old lies: it doesn’t happen here more often than elsewhere (yes, it does); more people are protected by guns than killed by them (no, they aren’t—that’s a flat-out fabrication); guns don’t kill people, people do; and all the other perverted lies that people who can only be called knowing accessories to murder continue to repeat, people who are in their own way every bit as twisted and crazy as the killers whom they defend. (That they are often the same people who pretend outrage at the loss of a single embryo only makes the craziness still crazier.)"

- It will be back up in a few days, just like the OMM page.
- [quote] Why wouldn't a smart person choose to be armed?
because your chance of survival is about 25%, that's with good training. most gunman don't have that.

- We live in the time where 50 years of NRA supremacy is revoked by 50 years of enabled violence of American against American.
The time has come for this to stop.
- In real life, r5 is more likely to die by his own gun than to have the Old West sharpshooter fantasies in his head actually come to fruition.
- For those who harbor fantasies of pulling out their legally concealed weapon to save the day like Walter Mitty, you only need think of the incident that occurred outside of the Empire State Building at the end of the summer.
An assailant with a gun killed a man in cold blood. Two trained police officers followed and he raised his arm at them in a suicide by cop gesture. The cops unloaded their weapons, killing the assailant and hitting and wounding eight bystanders. They are weapons trained and tested/certified on a regular basis. That turned out very well for the bystanders, no?
I'm sure it would have turned out better if it was a Chuck Norris wannabe at an elementary school. No doubt.
- Link to their real Facebook page, please.
- Here's the link, r13, but it redirects to your own page or the fb homepage if you're not on fb.
http://www.facebook.com/NationalRifleAssociation
- What R11 said.
Many times over.
- That and the fact that people refuse to give up their belief that the world is divided by "good guys vs bad." A formerly "good guy" could become a shooter under the right circumstances, or accident. This is a fact.
- r12 is right
- The page is still down. How cowardly of them. They must be in emergency meetings with image consultants and PR.
-
"For those who harbor fantasies of pulling out their legally concealed weapon to save the day like Walter Mitty"
R5 = pocketa, pocketa, pocketa
- Anyone who's seen a Western knows that the shooter who draws first wins. Mass shooters don't phone or text ahead of time to alert their victims, they take them by surprise. Also, the little prick in Sandy Hook, like the one in Aurora, was wearing body armor.
There's also the little fact that, as with Waco and Ruby Ridge and numerous other siege and hostage shoot-outs, some psychos are more than happy to engage in battle with law enforcement officers who are better trained and better armed than they are.
You also have trigger-happy rat's asses like George Zimmerman running around just dying for an excuse to whip out their guns and start firing away. So this idea that everybody would be safer if everybody was packing is just a marketing concept for the gun industry with no basis whatsoever in reality.
- exactly.
- This event needs to be labled as an NRA-sponsored massacre.
- [quote], the NRA has integrity when it comes to their their only issue.
Indeed, they do. They have to have it. Their very existence depends on this. Keeping the arms industry rolling in profit is their sole reason for existence, so they better do their job right.
Now, as this story is unfolding, it has the potential to be more damaging than Columbine and Virginia Tech combined, IMO.
Nancy Lanza has been described as a gun enthusiast who was active in the "recreational gun community." It would not be surprising if she's a member of the NRA, would it? If this is the case, the NRA has more than their average shooting rampage to deal with. It's their biggest fucking nightmare which provides evidence against and counters every single one of their propaganda points.
A newly divorced single woman who lives alone with her son needs weapons for self-defense, right? Why, yes, at least three (more have been recovered from her home). Everybody knows that a gal's best friend is automatic weapon fire!
Guns don't kill people! People with guns kill people! Especially not if a cache is lying around easily accessible to a kid with known "issues."
I'll bet you dollars to donuts the NRA checked their member rolls yesterday and came upon her name. The problem is that Nancy Lanza was the face (no pun intended) the NRA wanted to sell to America; she was the representation of their brand on their marketing material. Nice, average American lady -- the embodiment of someone who has a NEED for her guns -- someone who could never do any harm. Uh, well, how did this turn out?! The NRA is going to have a harder time explaining this one away. They're huddling in some smoke-filled room strategizing how the hell they're going to get out of this one. Hopefully, they will be as effective as the Komen Foundation was this spring.
[quote]NEWTOWN, Conn. — Federal authorities are visiting local gun ranges in Connecticut but have found no evidence that the gunman who opened fire at an elementary school there trained for the attack or was an active member of the recreational gun community.
[quote]Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms spokeswoman Ginger Colbrun said Saturday that investigators have also interviewed Connecticut gun dealers and shoring range employees trying to determine whether there was any training or other behavior that precipitated the attack.
[quote]She says investigators have yet to find evidence of that.
[quote]Colbrun says the ATF was tracing multiple guns recovered at the home of the gunman's mother.

Body armor doesn't help if someone aims for the head.
- We would never have known, R24.

- [quote] A violent attack happening near me would end in under 5 seconds, one way or another
It would wind up with you being dead and here's why:
I'm the gunman. I know what I'm going to do. I've planned it out. I've got a bulletproof vest and I'm likely going to shoot myself when I run out of ammo.
You are someone going about your day. Let's say you are in Panera Bread at lunchtime, waiting to give your order.
I walk in and start shooting. You never saw me pull the gun because you weren't looking for a lone gunman. By the time you realized what was happening, I've shot several people (possibly you) already.
But let's say I didn't shoot you yet. Where is your gun? In your briefcase? In your pocket? In your purse? You will have to reach for your gun, take it out, hold it up and aim at the shooter.
But I see you! I'm the shooter in the place where I can see everyone. Of course I'm going to blow you away with my assault weapon as you reach for your handgun.
Here's what really happens when a shooter starts shooting: you dive for cover to save your life. It doesn't matter if you have a handgun or not. This isn't a movie and you're not Bruce Willis. You want to live. You'll never get far enough along to aim at the gunman.
- [quote] Body armor doesn't help if someone aims for the head
A SWAT team might be able to aim at the head. But let's say you're a handgun carrying citizen. You're going to be able to pull a gun, aim it at the head of the shooter, hit the shooter in the head while children are screaming and bleeding all around you? And you're sure you're not going to miss the head of the shooter and accidentally hit a child with your shot, thereby adding to the body count?
People are so unrealistic. It takes time to find your gun -- is it in a desk in your office? -- steady yourself, aim it and shoot without the shooter seeing you and shooting you first.
Silly people.
- [quote]You will have to reach for your gun, take it out, hold it up and aim at the shooter.
Along with half a dozen other people, who also live in this fantasy world, and who are confused about who the real shooter is, since now half a dozen people are pointing guns, so they start shooting each other. The police enter, see half a dozen people pointing guns and shooting, and shoot them all. The end.
In the chaos of an attack like this, adding additional gunmen is adding fuel to the fire, not putting the fire out.
- i love r27
- If someone is properly trained, they know what lies behind their target. They would know the pelvis is a better and easier disabling shot than the head.
I take perhaps a quarter of a second to unholster and fire a pistol with professional accuracy, and any person of average ability and intelligence can be trained to do the same.
It blows my mind that people would rather let active shooters continue their psychotic killing sprees until they run out of ammunition, rather than let good people conceal carry a weapon. Especially among sexual and racial minorities and women, frequently targets of random violent crime.
Arm%20yourself
- Except R31 , do you not remember how cops shot eight innocent people at the Empire State Building, trying to take out one gunman? And cops are trained to shoot and react calmly in crisis situations.
An armed teacher up against a psychopathic, suicidal gunman would have resulted in the death of the teacher and then the deaths of more children.
- pussies.
(the NRA i mean)
- There's goes that "good people" myth again.
- The simple fact is countries with very strict gun control laws (ie: Europe and Asia) have very low gun violence rates. GEE, I WONDER WHY.
- I'm sure the people who knew Adam Lanza thought he was once a "good person" too at one point. Human beings are not black and white creatures. The concept of "good and evil" as been de-bunked by most educated persons. Anyone who still harbors thoughts that there are inherent good and evil people need to take a few critical theory courses.
Jacques%20Derrida
- Thank you, R36.
- [quote]I take perhaps a quarter of a second to unholster and fire a pistol with professional accuracy, and any person of average ability and intelligence can be trained to do the same.
While they're in an assault situation? See R27. (Soldiers get very very scared in battle and don't always fire with a great deal of accuracy because of fear.)
[quote]It blows my mind that people would rather let active shooters continue their psychotic killing sprees until they run out of ammunition, rather than let good people conceal carry a weapon
What a horseshit statement. No one has said that and you know it.
- i love r38.
- [quote]I take perhaps a quarter of a second to unholster and fire a pistol with professional accuracy, and any person of average ability and intelligence can be trained to do the same.
These universal cat-like reflexes also explain the complete lack of auto accidents.
- [quote]This event needs to be labled as an NRA-sponsored massacre.
And gun sellers should now be labeled Arms Dealers and Automatic Fifles as weapons of mass destruction. But of course the NRA will pay all the politicians off and nothing will be done.
- Do fifles have finger holes along the barrel?
- For R5 and R31.

- [quote]It blows my mind that people would rather let active shooters continue their psychotic killing sprees until they run out of ammunition, rather than let good people conceal carry a weapon.
Okay, so how come the armed people in the open carry state of Arizona didn't whip out their guns and shoot the guy who killed & wounded all those people (including Gabby Giffords)?
There were law enforcement officers and gun-carrying citizens around, and that Uncle Fester lookalike just kept shooting until someone (without a gun) tackled him when it jammed.
- They are still not brave enough to put their FB page back online.
- I can almost guarantee that we'll be reading/watching a report in the next few weeks or month about how the sale of guns skyrocketed after the Connecticut shooting. Gun nuts are out purchasing high-powered weapons in the days to come before "it's banned." The NRA and guns nuts aren't going away quietly. If anything, it will encourage them to buy more.
- r27/r28 is absolutely right.
However, the Mark Wahlbergs (like r31) in this thread are amusing.
- Hell I don't even blame the NRA. They are simply using the system to get what they want. It's the pussy politicians who are either on the take or too cowardly to tell these psychos NO! They let the assault weapons ban expire. They are ones who have more blood on their hands.
- R45 where did you hear that?
- r45 read accounts of the day in the nyt as did i, r50.
- Back up now?
Even Morning Joe just denounced the NRA.
- Wayne Lapierre.
What number is this wife?
Does he have any children?

- The NRA is trying to conceal their connection to this atrocity.
They are, morally if not literally, co-conspirators.
- ...again, it seems very likely that the killer's deceased mother was herself a rabid NRA member.
TPTB at NRA don't want this fact to come out, no doubt.

- ?
- R5, if you think you need semi-automatic weapons to do that or that anyone should be able to get a gun asap, i.e., instacheck like at the gun shows, then maybe you'd better take another shooting course.
- R31 writes:I take perhaps a quarter of a second to unholster and fire a pistol with professional accuracy
And just how have you measured this, R31? And how often? R45 was right.
- They're baaaaaaaaaaack

- The NRA gets MILLIONS in donations for their lobbyists each year. If you want to make a change, donate to the Brady Campaign. The only thing that can turn the heads of politicians are the lobbyists supported by your donations.
http://www.bradycampaign.org/
- Mark Wahlberg is a perfect match for R31. I nominate them to play "The Ambiguously Gay Duo" in the Broadway show.
- Nancy Lanza was about as well armed as it gets.
A lot of good it did her......
