[quote]A year later, in another press release, Hynes’ office announced the indictments of 43 gang members, disclosing the names of the gang leaders charged and describing the crimes perpetrated against the unnamed victims. [quote]Any of the violent gang-affiliated defendants who were charged could have easily figured out the identity of the victims and witnesses by simply reading that press release. [quote]These in-the-open prosecutions demonstrate the imbalance of Hynes’ practice of disclosing only the identities of certain charged defendants who live in certain communities — while keeping the public in the dark about other defendants, perhaps those who come from powerful voting blocs whose support Hynes needs. [quote]After all, gang members and pimps do not simply “shun” a victim who reports a crime, as is supposedly done by the Orthodox. Instead, they often intimidate, threaten, coerce and, in some cases, kill, witnesses and victims.

• Hines was in the Othodox community's pocket for the most part as that group contributed a lot of $$ to his campaigns. But once the NY Times exposed his lax treatment of these cases, he had to grow a spine and finally did his job with this case. I just hope this conviction doesn't give him the opportunity to go back to his old ways. The Othodox community, like other separatist, insular religious sects, tries to act as a law unto itself. And their refusal to believe in Webeerman's guilt is just another example of collective brainwashing and a long-standing patriarchal culture.

• At this point the default position for any Religious leader should be Pedo until proven innocent.

• These people have a right to return to Israel. Maybe they should be sent there.

• The Jewish community has its own code of omerta. No doubt a remnant from the days when the wrong word from the wrong person could bring down a pogrom on the entire community. But there's no excuse for this bullshit.
