Let's Have a Kiki
How was this song not nominated for a Grammy?
http%3A//www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DeGCD4xb-Tr8
- The Glee version with SJP flouncing about was vastly superior.
*snort*
- How powerful is Perez Hilton, really?
Anonymous
- Grammys are now only awards for songs targeted at the Teen Girl Market.
Adult music need not apply.
- Has anyone actually had a kiki?
- can someone tell me why this song got so popular with gays?
Kiki-speak pre-dates Paris is Burning....it's literally like if the Macarena got popular again and everyone was doing it.
Sad to see yet another thing that black people invented be co-opted by obnoxious white people who don't even use the term properly or know that Kiki was around waaaaaay before the Scissor Sisters
- I had my kiki removed when I was eight.
- Kiki is the name my brother's stepson gave his security blanket. I've never heard of this particular kiki until now, so it's weird to associate a child's blankie with that. :-/
- This song is actually kind of annoying. They performed it on Wendy Williams not too long ago.

- Whatever happened to Kiki Dee?

Sad? If it wasn't brought up again and "co-opted" by "obnoxious white people", you'd be bitching that it was being neglected and hidden by racist whites. Can't fucking win.
- Because Grammys are voted on by people who either have never been to a club or, if they have, not after 1980.
- The popularity of black culture in this country is something to be proud of, R5, not resentful over.
- hmmmm maybe because it is a stupid song, not done very well.
- More importantly: Why are the Scissor Sisters so vastly fucking overrated?
- Because Jake Shears is HOT.

- What are you talking about? Going to the toilet?
Rose%20Ratliffe
- Not many people have had me.
Kiki
- R10, it wasn't neglected and hidden in the least. If my macarena reference didn't work for you, let me try again. It's like if everyone started saying "Cool, daddy-o!" or dancing the charleston again......the fad happened once, was big, and didn't really need to happen again.
R12, I agree entirely, it would just be nice to see the originators of it hold on to it. Elvis Presley became a softer James Brown, Amy Winehouse literally stole Sharon Jones' band to go big, and now the Scissor sisters have followed suit.
I'm not american by birth or living in america anymore....but it's sad that black culture in your country can never just stand on its own. It always has to be black culture as performed by white people.
- R15 --
Useta was!
- Always thought it was VERY close to "If A Girl Answers" by Vanity 6.
Someone should do a mashup.

- I think this version is much better!

- Glad I'm not the only gay who finds that group tedious and overrated
- Elton John had a love/hate relationship with Kiki Dee. When she requested inclusion in his hit song 'Wrap Her Up' her request was granted but when she showed up for the video shoot she was met with a pie in the face!

Actually I love both and both have 3 million hits. And if possible Glee's is more gay. Queers, drag queens, show tunes and Sarah Jessica Parker. You never would have had this on network TV five years ago.

- R20 Kiki sounds NOTHING like that song.
- R21 wins!
- Kiki is motherfuckin hot.
- I thought kiki was when two drag queens have sex while in drag???
- And I thought it referred to versatile lesbians.
- The first time I heard this song (on WWHL), I didn't even see how it qualified as a song. They were basically just talking over some minimal music. Then I heard it again on Wendy and liked it a little more. After I heard it a third time, I LOVED it and had to download it. It's one of those songs that just grows on you the more times you hear it! It's suuuuper gay.
- I played it for my 15 year-old niece and her friend and they LOVED it.
- The only purpose R21 serves is to underscore how tight the Scissor Sisters were, and all in one take.
- r30: That's the problem with it for me. It's too self-aware that "THIS IS A GAY SONG".
- r10 nails it.
Give it up, PC shrew at r18.
Fads come and go, then they come and go, and then they come and go. That's the way it's always been.
Blacks and whites live in the US so it's inevitable that musical styles will influence each other. All the American styles like jazz, country, gospel, folk etc are all related to each other and more intertwined than most ever realize and were created by black AND white artists. And when Marian Anderson sings opera or Charlie Pride sings country do you shriek about blacks appropriating white music? No? Then stfu.
It's crucial that musicians get paid fairly for their work and are acknowledged for their accomplishments, we should live in an equal society, but beyond that you're just exposing your white liberal guilt and PC yammering. Musicians are influenced by a wide range of styles. Deal.
- stupid. next.
