Star trek (II) trailer drops...

We should all know what the end of the world is going to sound like by now. It will have a deep voice, followed by a LOUD horn blowing and large objects crashing into a crowded street full of people. Aside from that horrible tailer cliché Cumberbatch, Pine, and Quinto look good- they all look good. I'm excited.

• It's the Teaser.

• Looks good. Also still has to be acknowledged that seeing a young openly gay actor being a major part of a blockbuster franchise is a cool thing.

• How can people STILL be debating who Cumberbatch actually is in this movie? It's been filmed, obviously someone knows and it's been leaked. IMDB says Kahn, but that seems implausible. Gary Mitchell is s much better fit - why all the mystery?

• The Japanese trailer shows a scene the mimics Spock's death in Wrath of Kahn-with the two hands on the glass. Kirk hand is up against it a way similar to the vulcan salute but it's not exactly. This has to be a total misdirection. I think it's Gary Mitchell's death scene - and Cumberbatch's hand. Maybe this is something that happens before he comes back all superhuman and pissed off. Given the brillant fact that they've rebooted the series and switched things around- anything can happen now. I can't wait for this movie.

• r1 A teaser has just a few seconds of footage. That seems like a full blown trailer to me.

• The Enterprise looks awfully small. Isn't it supposed to be much bigger? I'm pretty sure Cumberbatch is playing Gary Mitchell, and if so, Alice Eve is the character Sally Kellerman played in TOS episode featuring Mitchell (they have the same hairstyle).

• I loved the part where Zachary Quinto screamed "You Bitch!" at Chris Pine and slapped him across the face.

• I suspect Quinto will be the odd man out of the promo game this time around -- Pine and Cumberbatch will probably present a united publicity front.

• The guy who plays Bones (forget his name) looks and sounds so much like DeForest Kelley it's a little eerie.

• Looks terrible. Star Trek is supposed to be cerebral, a feast and puzzle for the mind about ethics and science. What I just watched in that trailer is the furthest thing from it. It's like making a Twilight Zone movie and it turning out to be Saw X.

• Interesting that it appears like the majority of it takes place on Earth. They haven't had that since ST4, which was of course partially comedic. I know the Internets are rife with talk that Cumberbatch is Khan, but I think you bitches are forgetting that in the original Khan is pissed at Kirk because he left him stranded in an episode from the original ST, and left him there to rot for 20 years. How on earth would they do this with the reboot cast, given the lack of a time interval? Also, there's one shot of him jumping 20 feet in the air that would seem to imply this particular villain has some sort of Superman-style superpowers, on Earth at least (not sure if this is due to gravity being lighter than his home planet or the sun's power a la Superman). Finally, that brief shot of a Starfleet ship rising out of some sort of sand or ground does not appear to be the Enterprise. Just sayin'.

• I've never understood the love-fest for the Star Trek re-boot. A complete lack of imagination on the part of the screen writers in that they had to haul in Leonard Nimoy to play Spock... the ridiculous destruction of Vulcan... the meeting of both Spock's... seriously? This has made ST fans cum all over themselves? It was just. plain. stupid. All of that pisses me off even more because the movie started out so well. Great re-casting of the main characters, good stuff at Starfleet, introducing Christopher Pike, etc... then blech.

• It doesn't hurt R23, which is why the entertainment industry has been hiring attractive actors and actresses since the dawn of the industry. People enjoy watching attractive people, it ain't rocket science. And honestly the only things you can really say about this trailer are there are lots of action scenes and how the cast looks.

• The only thing that really bothered me about the re-boot was the destruction of Vulcan. But I'm so happy that Rick Berman and Brannon Braga are not involved in it, I'll overlook just about anything.

• I like Cumberbatch a lot. They're all decent actors. And the plot line is supposedly where Kirk "grows up" in a sense. He has to suffer loss and know the consequences of his own decision etc. I think this will be good.

• It looks like every action film/SF cliche crammed into a minute and a half and Bonnydick Honeybunch (whose face barely registered in the few seconds it's onscreen) sounds like he's doing his Jeremy Irons impression. You could take out the shots of Kirk and splice in the Doctor and Amy Pond and it wouldn't make any difference.

• Honestly, this doesn't say "Gary Mitchell" to me at all. It does seem like a completely different take on Kahn. It could, of course, be neither of them. This could all be misdirection. The 'Gary Mitchell' thing seemed to come out of the blue, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were studio misdirection. Mitchell had the powers of a god...why would he be carrying a weapon? that makes no sense. I still think it's Kahn.

• R19...though you are missing one interesting point. There are times where Brits have been traditionally used as villains in American movies, in a way that suggests they are fey and a bit 'queer'. There's sometimes a subtext to that use of villain. A lot of Americans think that anyone with a British accent is a bit poofy .

I can see the clues you're pointing to, but it doesn't mean it's Mitchell. The blonde could be Nurse Chapel for all you know. :) Or that yeoman who was always trying to get into Kirk's pants. Yeoman Rand. She might be styled a bit like Sally Kellerman's character, but it that doesn't mean it's her.

• Put me down for another vote guessing that it looks like the plot is going to be a reworking of "Where No Man Has Gone Bfore," with bandersnatch as Gary Mitchell and the blonde woman pictured as Sally Kellerman's character, Dr. Elizabeth Dehner. I want them to have the creepy aluminum foil eyes, however.

• Yeah, I wonder about that too. it makes no sense that Quinto would leave the franchise he professes to love. They kept him on for this one, so as not to appear homophobic, but are ditching him afterwards. It's offensive.

• Spock won't die this time. It'll be Kirk who "dies". Somehow, before they are separated by the glass, Spock absorbs Kirk's spirit("Katra") and somehow Kirk gets re-engergized in the next film. Perhaps Genesis is developed early(The blonde could be Carol Marcus). Spock will suffer like Bones did in Trek III, until he gets Kirk out of his head. As for Bones, I guess he'll continue to be on the fucking backburner. He's there anyways, as they seem to think Uhura should take his place in the "Big Three".

• "That Green blooded sonofabitch" Best line ever in Star Trek. What a shame the awesome Bones/Spock rivalrly will likely be dropped so we can devote time to the hard on that execs have for Zoe Saldana.

• Quinto won't quit or be fired. He is renegotiating. He got almost better reviews than Pine and is essential for the franchise to continue. His higher demands will be met and he will agree to appear in three more movies.

• If you're a Cumberbatch fancier I highly recommend the miniseries "To the Ends of the Earth," the first two episodes of which give you a pretty good look at the Cumberbuns.

• Gary Mitchell fits the description...but, so does Garth of Izar, the criminally insane former captain from the Tantalus penal colony. That said, I'd go with Gary since the opening scene in dress uniform seems to suggest a funeral of some sort - and Gary would have been deemed lost.

• Karl Urban already said he's Gary Mitchell in an interview he gave when he was doing publicity for Dredd. The blonde woman who looks like Billie Piper is rumored to be either Dr. Dehner or Carol Marcus. I actually think Marcus might be more likely, as she and Gary were originally supposed to be in the first movie. I'm still holding out slim hope for Nurse Chapel. It did strike me as odd, because they've been publishing a comic book series for the past year or so that retells classic episodes in the reboot universe. They're actually pretty satisfying. But one of the ones they've already done was "Where No Man Has Gone Before," and it just struck me as odd that Paramount would sign off on that knowing the movie was in the pipe. Personally, I was hoping they'd go for "Balance of Terror" for this movie, but I know I was in the minority there.

• John Harrison is a red herring. And while we're on the subject: Quinto was on Conan when Cumberbatch and Pine were in Japan promoting the movie. He is getting star billing and participating fully in the PR campaign--you are totally wrong if you think that a terrific talent like Quinto would be thrown under the bus because he is gay by anyone associated with a franchise like Star Trek in 2012. This movie is going to be GREAT! And another thing, Alice Eve has a natural-looking face while Billy Piper's has clearly been molded out of plastic; there is no more resemblance there than there is between a celeb and her bobble-head doll.

• From all accounts so far it sounds like Harrison is an amalgamation of Mitchell and that Izar dude. According to Cumberbatche's latest interview, 1) He has extrahuman physical [italic]and mental powers [/italic] (he can "sow an idea in people's minds"). 2) He's a terrorist who could be viewed as a "leader." 3) He has some kind of secret which the plot reveals. That first part about being able to sow ideas in people's minds means he wouldn't have to be a shape shifter to hide his identity.

• There's nothing off about them leaving Quinto out of the Japan trip. They left behind Zoe, Urban and the rest of the cast too. It's not a premiere, it's a teaser months ahead of the premiere. At this point the major interest is on the villain, and as it turns out (and Paramount would have already been well aware) Cumberbatch has a substantial following in Japan. Based on accounts, Cumberbatch was mobbed everywhere by fans while almost nobody gave a fuck about Pine. Couldn't even be bothered to ask Pine for an autogragh when they were sure they'd have no chance to get through the crowd surrounding Cumberbatch. They brought Cumberbatch to fire enthusiasm but it was appropriate to bring along a token member of the Enterprise crew. Kirk is the obvious choice as the lead of the ensemble and Pine wasn't otherwise engaged.
