Dr. Oz "Gay Conversion"
If you missed it and live in Metro New York, the episode reruns show today 11:00-Noon on WNYW-5.
- What does he say? Why should I watch this?
- Anything for ratings, disgusting.
- r1, you should watch to see for yourself and not just take observations from others on DL.
- We're not taking the observation of other DL'ers, GLAAD was invited on the show and they gave their account on their site, including that they weren't told the "reparative therapy" shysters were going to be there and presented as legitimate.
- In the 70's David Susskind hosted a live program with members of Gay Activists Alliance and Aesthetic Realism (founded by Eli Siegel) who said people can be changed. Actor William Atherton claimed to have been converted to Str8. IIRC, the episode was "Those Who Are and Those Who Were."
Friend, Marc Rubin, was on with the GAA.
- I'm just trying to find out why I should watch it, R3. I hate that guy and I've never watched the show anyway.
So stop playing hall monitor today, OK?
- I hate this fucker...his brand "Dr. Oz" and all that entails. I get a zillion spam email from this jerk and his minions
- Every show is the same (although once in a blue moon they'll show something interesting about anatomy I didn't know).
Oz, as a person, just strikes me as too smug and self-satisfied. And creepy.
- Don't watch it if you are an Oz fan. I've watched at least 3 shows a week since he started and after that show I'm disgusted and haven't watched since. He presented 'reparative therapy' as a viable/equal option under the guise of 'we need to have this discussion.' I mean, I was thinking of this guy as a doctor -- backed by science. The reality is... uh... not that.
It's a TV show and now I'm left to wonder about all the vetting his team does. Reparative therapy is not backed by science at all. If anything, it has been scientifically shown to NOT work. It's a last ditch effort by those stuck in a religion that tells them that there is something wrong with them so they feel pressure to be different (rather than switching religions.) And by 'legitamizing' it, he is continuing the villainizing of being gay and further contributing to the high gay suicide rate.
ugh... so frustrating. In the coming season, prepare for him to open the dialog about evolution vs. creationism (and how both are scientifically viable). There's more scientific evidence to support astrology over astronomy than there is to support reparative therapy.
Suggestion: Don't waste your time watching it.

- Wow thanks Op,You're a lifeline for those of us stupid enough to be interested in a television show dependant upon appealing to the lowest common denominator in people to get ratings(in this case fear and anger)and are also too backwards to own a DVR or even a TV guide. Thanks Op,your 18 bucks has been well spent.
- R10 is right. We should never discuss television shows dealing with gay subject matter on a gay gossip website.
Datalounge is only for trading porn and recipes. Discussion of gay people as represented in pop culture is clearly off-limits.
***violent%20eye%20roll***
- violent eye roll = old man in the house.
- It's not the sevenites anymore,we don't have to "show our support" for every fucking thing the entertainment industry shits out with the word "gay" in it.
- R13, your post does not even make sense.
We're discussing a nationally televised talk show that presented human sexuality as changeable and homosexuality as something undesirable that should be suppressed, reprogrammed and ultimately eradicated. A medical doctor presented these views as worthy of discussion and debate, to a large, impressionable audience.
No one is talking about "showing support" for the entertaining industry.
Do you have a cognitive impairment of some sort?
- Dr OZ promotes a cure for homosexuality on the show. A day later, he denied it on his website, saying he supports the AMA stand on this....yet he failed to mention that on his show.
Take OZ DOWN!!!!!!!!
- The media treats every snake oil salesmen pitch like it's a valid opinion in the hopes their ratings will skyrocket through the roof.
It's all about manipulation and 'water cooler' word of mouth appeal (the pre viral marketing tool).
- He had has fraus whipped up into a homophobic frenzy on his site, where he posted GLAAD's response. They ignored his tepid mea culpa, I'm sure he's still their hero for having the "courage" to put the "reparative therapists" on.
- I was dissappointed. I respected Dr.Oz but now I have less respect for him. I figured he would take the sides of Gay conversion. I figured he was anti-gay
- This guy was born in the USA, yet felt a need to take on Turkish citizenship so he could join the Turkish army and fight for Islam.
Does his promotion of a cure for gays really surprise anyone?
- I watched and didn't see a single person converted to a gay. Fraud!
Let me know when they do THAT show.

- So much damage done to Dr Ozs rep for a small, one time audience number boost. This is going to dodge him for years and years.
- "We're discussing a nationally televised talk show that presented human sexuality as changeable and homosexuality as something undesirable that should be suppressed, reprogrammed and ultimately eradicated. You are so fucking boring.
- No, R22, you're boring. And ignorant. I think you might be looking for threads on One Direction.
- [quote]This is going to dodge him for years and years.
WTF does that mean????
- Some power Queen like Geffen, is going to axe his show within the next year.
- I'm sure the Turkish Army has a program to cure homosexuality too.
- R22 is a very, very sick person.
and
Dr. Oz is a scam artist.
- Look, there's a difference between discussing this show and somebody posting the info so we 'can' watch it. Promoting the episode here is offensive.
- So Dr Oz likes promoting people who think Gays are a psychological disorder. It is his reputation at stake!
- [quote]Some power Queen like Geffen, is going to axe his show within the next year.
You don't get to be a "power Queen" by having morals and scruples and caring about bigotry. And Geffen has absolutely nothing to do with this show/network and has no power over it. Anyway, Miss G ain't interested in your petty little woes.

- Rumor has it there is a Jewish producer on this show. I'm guessing Orthodox.
- I DVRed the show if only because I couldn't believe that in the 2010s, a show like this would be on in the first place.
Watching it, I felt like I was in some kind of a time warp that transported me back to the 1980s, and Sally Jessy Raphael had on guests who were arguing about the merits of conversion therapy.
There are no merits. The word "reparative" alone tells you these people believe there is something wrong with being gay, and they're just the ones to fix it.
Oh, and the show made me think of this clip from a few years back . . .

- The show was pure promotion of the anti-gay agenda.
- I masturbate six times a day, seven when Dr Oz is on.
- I masturbate eight times a day, nine when Doctor Travis Stork is on

for r5
I remember seeing a repeat of that show in 1983...I remember it vividly since I was really young and really harmed by it.
years later I was working in a book store one summer and I caught William Atherton going through the beefcake calenders....I was I'd had the nerve to confront him and say....yeah you've been cured but I was young. (I did go up and say "can I help you?" just in order to embarrass him during his softcore male porn binge.
- I know ton's of gays who converted.
It was seroconverted but still...
- The Dr Oz show right out of the 1970s!
- Wow, I just thought he was a fraud before. Now I think he is a creep and totally untrustworthy.
- Funny when a norm says a 'mo should stop all that and be regular, the 'mos all scream...
No a gay should be gay and the norms should accept them as they are. 'Mos don't need to change and 'mos must learn to accept themselves as they are.
But when a transsexual says they should be the other gender than what they are, the 'mos all say, "No in this case they should NOT learn to accept themselves and they SHOULD CHANGE."
Talk about a double standard.
- There is a growing anti-gay contingent in the TV industry.
- A "norm"?
You are anything but "norm" R20. Normal people aren't obsessed with gay people or troll their websites with inflammatory remarks. Normal people aren't threatened by gay people, especially normal heterosexuals. We've all known for years that it's usually closet cases who exhibit the kind of obsessiveness you're displaying. "Norms", gay and straight, recognize this and roll their eyes at your rants.
Admit it: you jerk off to gay porn and then come here to work through your guilt and self-loathing. It's so obvious.
- R40 aka 'mo' troll - you are so fucking tedious. I keep f&f'ing you, but obviously the f&f function means nothing on this site. I never see anyone disparage transsexuals on here - if anything, there's support, so fuck off with your allegations and generalities.
The problem with Dr. Oz even giving this a platform is the fact that he didn't go out of his way to discount reparative therapy. If he had on a group of 'psychic surgeons', you can bet he'd have an opinion on the harm they do. Reparative therapy has absolutely NO redeeming qualities - it suggests there's an illness that needs to be cured, when the only thing that needs to be 'cured' are the opinions of parents who think gay kids need to be 'cured'. The problem isn't being gay, the problem is when people - in this day and age - still believe it's a choice that can be changed. You can see it in the people who commented on Dr. Oz's website that they thought it was fair of him to present it as a viable option, which only goes to demonstrate his lack of admonishment. It's a shame - I had more regard for him than that, but no more. As a professional, he should be working towards eradicating it, not just saying it's an important conversation to have.
And R40 - it cannot be over-stated - just please fuck off already.
- I was talking to R40 at R42, apologies to R20.
What a moron this "mos" troll is. Why hasn't it been banned?
