The only juggernaut at the Academy Awards will be "Lincoln." It's a master class in acting and it's a film about the single most beloved and revered American figure in history helmed by a distinctly American director, written by acted by the most gifted male actor alive. You really have no idea about how the Academy works. "Lincoln" hits every major touchstone the members like and want in their films, AND it's a major studio release. Les Miz might have a shot in a weaker year, but it had no hope this year.

I'm SOOOO happy that Bigelow won. I saw an early screening of ZDT and it's a jaw dropping film. I liked both Lincoln and Les Miz too, but ZDT had that It Factor that those other films just didn't.

A lot of people are not so keen about THE MASTER, and SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK falls apart in the 2nd half - I've read some not-so-good reviews of it. Weinstein will campaign his way to some nominations, but that'll be the extent of it. As the NYT stated today, this is the year the studios will deliver the good for the bulk of the Oscars.

There's a lot of perhaps untested love for Michael Haneke's Amour in the media but I just can't see this one being much of a crowd pleaser, especially if you've already had to deal with end of life issues. I, honestly, do not understand for whom the film is for. It's not even as grueling as the real thing (nowhere near) and is hardly entertaining. I think all of the love for Amour is going to quietly disappear during awards season. For what it is, it's just been way over hyped.

I haven't seen Amour, but I have no doubt that Riva has a very good - if not a locked - chance of getting an oscar nomination. But here I was speaking of who will win the NBR award. As far as the subject of Amour being too heavy, let's look no further than who won best actress from NBR last year. Tilda Swinton for We Need to Talk About Kevin; so clearly the graveness of Amour is not necessarily an impediment to Riva winning (for that matter Weisz or Cotillard could win, and The Deep Blue Sea and Rust and Bone are not exactly laugh riots!!!!). Also, it may be that AMPAS will decide to nominate both Riva and Wallice, thereby making history for having the oldest and youngest nominees for best actress ever in the same year. Anything can happen; or so it now seems; let's just hope that sense of no foregone conclusions continues through the season; otherwise it becomes a deadly bore to tune in Oscar night and see only annointed victors.

R90, they make the voting in the final round public. It will be on IMDb eventually, if it isn't published tom'w. I like the NYFCC, they feel the most prestigious, but I also like the LA critics. They're mavericks. They awarded Brazil Best Picture.
Anne did not get a majority on the 1st ballot and her support waned on the 2nd ballot, when each voter can submit up to three choices (1st Choice = 3 pts., 2nd Choice = 2 pts., etc.) By the 3rd ballot you can't add any new names. To win you have to not only get the most points but you also have to appear on more than half the ballots.

I think Weisz will certainly win (or at least be nominated for) the BAFTA for Best Actress but she'll need a Golden Globe and/or SAG nomination if she's to be in the running for an Oscar nom.
I don't think Weisz is eligible for the BAFTA. That film was a 2011 release in the UK...I think she'd have been eligible last year. (don't quote me though, not sure.)

I looked up the film and it was released in the fall of 2011 in the UK. Rachel Weisz was nominated for some minor awards but not at the BAFTAs. Unless the NYFCC award increases her visibility and snags her a Golden Globe I think her chances of an Oscar nom are very slim. Jennifer Lawrence is still the front runner.

According to the by-laws, since Anne didn't win on the first ballot but was described as the "initial front runner," at best she had the majority of votes, with each member restricted to one vote, but not 50% of the vote. In the second round, voting opens up to three nominations, from which point support for Anne ebbed away from her. The voting pattern here is significant in that it suggests more people do not want Anne Hathaway to win an Oscar than people who do want her to win an Oscar.
Given critics don't vote for the Oscar, it suggests absolutely nothing, R110. Let's wait and see what happens at the SAG Awards before inscribing Sally's name on the Oscar.
I think the Hollywood Foreign Press will support the Weisz nomination given she is a former GG winner and there will be 10 actress nominations. She might even win the GG, since Lawrence will be in another category.

The interesting thing about the International Press Academy Satellite nominations at R88, is that even though LES MIZ got a ton of performance and design nominations, Tom Hooper failed to get nominated for best director. I'm getting the feeling that the industry is tiring of Hooper and his look-at-me faux artsiness. A semi-related question: Has a film ever won best picture at the Oscars without even scoring a best director nomination?
Wings, Grand Hotel, and Driving Miss Daisy all won Best Picture without the director being nominated. I think Hooper will probably be nominated, though I wish they would go with someone else. He basically won a couple of years ago for a TV movie and that should be award enough, especially when they made Scorsese wait a 100 years and lose to one actor playing director after another. I think it would be pretty damn surprising if Sally Field won. That would mean two of the acting categories would be won by three time winners, and the academy also gave Streep her third last year. They usually like to spread awards around a little and not give too many to the same person, unless it's Edith Head. Geez, Spielberg would also be in line for his third, if they decided to go all in for Lincoln. That's a lot of potential repetition for a show that is already boring as hell.
Spielberg has never won at NYFCC. He even lost for Schindler's List (Jane Campion won instead for The Piano), but he's won twice at the National Society of Film Critics, another NYC based critics group with many of the same members, and a reputation for being the most highbrow of the major awards. It's a little bizarre.

Isabelle Huppert - she plays the same character all the time, but I'm not holding that against her. She's terrific within her limitations. A true artist... so fearless. Isabelle Adjani - the exact same thing. I love Glenn Close, Tilda Swinton, Emma Thompson, Vanessa Redgrave, Glenda Jackson, Gena Rowlands, Ingrid Bergman, Bette Davis, Dietrich, Crawford, Judy Davis, Naomi Watts, Angela Bassett, Juliette Binoche, Cotillard, Blanchett, Penelope Cruz, Catherine Deneuve, Jeanne Moreau, Miou-Miou, and Sandrine Bonnaire. I loved Virna Lisi in La Reine Margot! Still holds up really well. Fernanda Montenegro in Central Station will always remain a fave. My most recent love is for Kirsten Dunst in Melancholia. Easily one of the best performances I've ever seen. And none of these actresses is in Meryl's league. But that's beside the point.

Forgot to say: I also love Romy Schneider, but only her work from the 70s. She was a major star in France & Germany, and should have been as big a name as Deneuve was in the States. She died early, and it never happened. Lots of terrific films from the 70s. So, after Streep my faves are Schneider, Huppert, Adjani, Ullmann and Thulin. And Fletcher, in that one role.
