• Gayle had two talk shows. From wiki: King briefly cohosted an NBC daytime talk show with Robin Wagner called Cover to Cover until it was cancelled. She was married to Bill Bumpus, an attorney and an assistant attorney general in Connecticut, from 1982 to 1993. In 1997 she was offered her own syndicated talk show, The Gayle King Show, which was later cancelled due to low ratings.

• I certainly didn't know Joan Rivers had a 1969 talk show. It was a syndicated daytime show that didn't last long. The set looks odd, but it's interesting that their conversation does sound like familiar daytime chat, the formula for that type of show was already in place so long ago. Joan had a 2nd daytime talk-show in the early 90s that ran for 5 yrs and won her an Emmy. She said she walked away from it, it wasn't cancelled, according to her.

• Most of these shows *are* forgotten, but some people seem to think "forgotten talk show" is any talk show that isn't currently airing. It's supposed to be shows that were never popular, and came and went so fast people truly don't remember them. So to list 80s/90s juggernauts like Sally Jesse, Geraldo, Ricki, and Jenny Jones is ridiculous, or even really old hit shows like Mike Douglas and Dinah Shore. I might also object to listing Arsenio Hall which was a huge hit for 4 yrs. Then he had to face direct competition from David Letterman and a flurry of other talk-shows debuting in his 5th year, which killed the show.

• Does anyone remember The Lives We Live. Not sure if it was local or national, but it was daytime in the early 1980s. Three women, (a WASP, a Jew, and someone else) met in each others "homes" and had coffee an discussed issues before a guest came over to talk about that issue. I remember when two of the women ganged up on the WASP because she was uncomfortable with gay rights and a gay rights activist was coming over. The New York Jew loved the gays of course.

• Tyra was touted as the Oprah of a new, even more self-involved generation, but her talk show didn't go anywhere. Remember how they replaced MadTV with Wanda Sykes? Yeah, that went over well.

It was on when I was in college so I'd come home wasted at like 3 in the morning and it was on and I have just the most surreal memories of her screaming at her audience while wearing giant wigs and everyone being terrifically uncomfortable. • My favorite was a show called, "My Talk Show", which was a partly scripted, part talk-show series that I have never been able to dig up info on via Google Bing, or--Heavens!--Ask Jeeves. I think it was on in 1990-1991. I just recall being in college and staying up very late at night to watch it (no VCR) and feeling bad for the actress who "hosted" it. (I think I saw her later on some ABC series--Cynthia something. Anyway, It was very funny, very refreshing but it didn't stand a chance. It was too odd--apparently improvized sitcom section about that day's show and star "popping by the house/set", followed by the actual talk show portion. I'd love to see it again to see if it really was as lovable as I recall or if I was just drunk.

• Merv really did go after the boys, didn't he? I remember Denny Terrio from Dance Fever (?) suing him, claiming that Merv came out of the bathroom in a leopard g-string and tried to mount him. "Merv! I'm not ready," Denny said, to no avail. The horror!

As a producer and a Broadway-columnist, the couple lived a glittering life of parties and premieres, nightclubs and swell society affairs. Even people who hated the couple felt compelled to tune in to hear what they had to say about the showbiz social scene. Alas, their hard-partying ways finally caught up with them. Dorothy had to be hospitalized for addiction to prescription drugs. While she was locked away, Dick carried on the radio show alone. Then one morning after an all-night bender, he showed up to do the program blind drunk. He had to be physically restrained from taking the microphone. His scheduled guests, writer-director Josh Logan and his wife Nedda, were forced to ad-lib the entire hour themselves. Luckily they too were a sparkling couple, witty and gay (in every sense of the word) and they rose to the occasion. The sponsor pulled the plug that day and after 18 years Dorothy and Dick breakfasted on the air no more. When Kilgallen returned from the sanitarium she was furious to discover that they had lost the show. It had been one of their primary sources of income.

• R137, yep Roseanne's show was surreal in its train-wreck awfulness. On the premiere episode she actually flew into the studio and over the audience suspended on wires, and that circus atmosphere was retained throughout its mercifully short run. She can be an incredibly self-indulgent performer, and when she isn't funny, she's painfully unfunny.

• I can't wait to listen to that tape of Dorothy and Dick!!! I'm obseesed with Dorothy Kilgallen and fascinated with the idea of that radio program. • I remember Roseanne's show. She tried to offer Monica Lewinsky $2 million in order to land the first interview with her. Monica turned down the money to do the Barbara Walters interview instead. I also remember that King World renewed the show for a second season and the affiliates were pissed. The studio was making money on it, but the affiliates were losing money and were furious they were obligated to keep airing it.

• I was going to post about "My Talk Show"... Loved it too. Very odd show, but I love Cynthia Stevenson, who went on to be in movies like "Home for the Holidays" and tv shows like "Men in Trees"...IIRC they replaced her with that Southern lady comedian who was also on some sitcoms in the 90s , and it wasn't as good after that.
