- One for the oldies:
The very hot and hunky Les Crane whose talk show in the 1960s actually rivalled Johnny Carson and The Tonight Show in popularity for a brief time.
He married Tina Louise and disappeared.
- Don't forget Tom Snyder!
He was kind of hunky when he was young, too!
- R28 Walberg, not Wahlberg. He's now the host of "Antiques Roadshow."
Chevy Chase
Magic Johnson
- That 90's show "Vibe" with Chris Spencer as a host. Notable only for a guest appearance by Sandra Bernhard where she grabbed the mike from Chris and started to sing En Vogue's "Don't Let Go" a capella.
- Arsenio Hall
- About the time I was over Oprah, Rolanda Watts wandered into my living room. Don't recall why, but I loved her!
- They should play that Joan Rivers clip alongside something from "Fashion Police" as a warning to everyone.
- "The Ananda Lewis Show," "The Whoopi Goldberg Show," "The Arsenio Hall Show," "The Chevy Chase Show" -- I actually watched all these, even staying up for the premiere of Chase's show 'cause he had on Whoopi and Goldie Hawn, whom I fell in love the previous year with "Sister Act" and "Death Becomes Her," respectively.
- Didn't Oprah's pal Gail have a daytime talk show way back in the day?
- George Hamilton and his ex Alana had one that was surprisingly not that bad.
Lauren Hutton's one-on-one talk show was superb and way ahead of it's time. Stylish and looked like it should have been on Ovation instead of late night syndication.
- It seems like every imaginable Z-lister and hasbeen was getting a shot at a talk show in the mid-90s.
- Gayle had two talk shows. From wiki:
King briefly cohosted an NBC daytime talk show with Robin Wagner called Cover to Cover until it was cancelled. She was married to Bill Bumpus, an attorney and an assistant attorney general in Connecticut, from 1982 to 1993. In 1997 she was offered her own syndicated talk show, The Gayle King Show, which was later cancelled due to low ratings.
- I certainly didn't know Joan Rivers had a 1969 talk show. It was a syndicated daytime show that didn't last long. The set looks odd, but it's interesting that their conversation does sound like familiar daytime chat, the formula for that type of show was already in place so long ago.
Joan had a 2nd daytime talk-show in the early 90s that ran for 5 yrs and won her an Emmy. She said she walked away from it, it wasn't cancelled, according to her.
- Mike and Maty

Current show that's already forgotten: "Marie" on the Hallmark Channel

That show that replaced "One Life to Live" on ABC with Tim Gunn, Ty Pennington and some fish...
- [quote]Joan had a 2nd daytime talk-show in the early 90s that ran for 5 yrs and won her an Emmy. She said she walked away from it, it wasn't cancelled, according to her.

- The Doris Day program where Rock Hudson famously (because it was the first time he publicly looked so sickly) appeared shortly before his death. Was that a regular talk show or was it like a special about her pets?
I'd never seen the program except for the clip with Rock.

- R72 Have you forgotten how to read? It's been mentioned NUMEROUS times.
And it's ROLONDA.
- Rolonda does voiceovers for Judge Joe Brown.
- Most of these shows *are* forgotten, but some people seem to think "forgotten talk show" is any talk show that isn't currently airing. It's supposed to be shows that were never popular, and came and went so fast people truly don't remember them. So to list 80s/90s juggernauts like Sally Jesse, Geraldo, Ricki, and Jenny Jones is ridiculous, or even really old hit shows like Mike Douglas and Dinah Shore. I might also object to listing Arsenio Hall which was a huge hit for 4 yrs. Then he had to face direct competition from David Letterman and a flurry of other talk-shows debuting in his 5th year, which killed the show.

John Davidson had a talk show where he incinerated his guest Rex Reed for not liking "Airplane" (this was about 1980) and then muttered to the audience: "I, for one, don't like being told what I should see".

- In high school, one of my classmates flew out to L.A. because his mom was appearing on The Leeza Gibbons Show. He was hot, but since he was poor white trash he tended to be shunned.
- R83, I remember back when his show was on the air, the CNN crawler ran a headline that read something like: "For second time, John McEnroe's talk show registers 0.0 with Nielsen."

- I Hulu'ed 'That Joan Rivers Show'. It's not bad. I am fascinated about how the talk shows from the 60s and 70s seem like actual 'talk' shows. You know, people having a conversation, not just scripted PR approved stories and shilling.
- Does anyone remember The Lives We Live.
Not sure if it was local or national, but it was daytime in the early 1980s. Three women, (a WASP, a Jew, and someone else) met in each others "homes" and had coffee an discussed issues before a guest came over to talk about that issue.
I remember when two of the women ganged up on the WASP because she was uncomfortable with gay rights and a gay rights activist was coming over. The New York Jew loved the gays of course.

- Tyra was touted as the Oprah of a new, even more self-involved generation, but her talk show didn't go anywhere.
Remember how they replaced MadTV with Wanda Sykes? Yeah, that went over well.
- Talk shows were always at least a little bit scripted, the difference is that actors were actually actors instead of people playing themselves in every film so they knew how to make even a talk show appearence seem natural.
- Queen Latifah had a talk show, too, that didn't last. Almost forgot about that one.
- The pea-brained Arsenio is about to inflict himself upon us once again. I always thought his main job was procuring women for black male celebrities.
He had zero interest in guests. If the topic wan't risque' or dumb he couldn't handle it, and often could be seen staring vacantly waiting for the guest to finish talking.
I think Eddie Murphy keeps him on his payroll, so he won't tell all Eddie's dirty secrets.

When I first watched Arsenio, I thought Eddie Murphy had a new talk show. haha I remember the first show I watched featured Angela Lansbury. I don't remember what she was promoting. It was September 1992. Maybe it was just the latest season of "Murder She Wrote," since that was still around.
- [quote]Hot Seat with Wally George was a guilty pleasure when I was a kid. He was a crazy conservative and the father of actress Rebecca De Mornay.
"Hot Seat" was an ultra-low-budget show in the mid-1980s on a tiny UHF channel in Southern California. Wally was a far-right winger (about your average Tea Partier today) and was a cult figure among teenagers and college kids for his helmet hair and polyester sports jackets. Wally played it to the hilt, but I don't think he was aware he was the butt of the joke even more than his guests most of the time. He was the WORST with a comeback, which was what was funny.
Here he is with "rape rockers" The Mentors, complaining that he has a "family show."

- Howard Stern's first show on Channel 9 (UPN) was horrifyingly hilarious. I'll never forget this guy that later died (Kenneth Keith Kallenback?) who insisted could blow smoke through his eyeballs while smoking and ended up puking under the desk. Even as a 5th grader I knew classy when I saw it!

- Virginia Graham had a talk show in the 1950s called "Food For Thought". Sponsor was Bohack, the supermarket chain on Long Island and in Queens. As a prop, Virginia had a bowl of fruit on the table. Don't recall her having any guets. She just philosophized for 15 minutes.
She was a Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Chicago. One smart cookie.

I KNEW he was family!
- Did anybody watch Roseanne's astonishingly bad talk show? It was on when I was in college so I'd come home wasted at like 3 in the morning and it was on and I have just the most surreal memories of her screaming at her audience while wearing giant wigs and everyone being terrifically uncomfortable. IT WAS INCREDIBLE.
- My favorite was a show called, "My Talk Show", which was a partly scripted, part talk-show series that I have never been able to dig up info on via Google Bing, or--Heavens!--Ask Jeeves. I think it was on in 1990-1991. I just recall being in college and staying up very late at night to watch it (no VCR) and feeling bad for the actress who "hosted" it. (I think I saw her later on some ABC series--Cynthia something. Anyway, It was very funny, very refreshing but it didn't stand a chance. It was too odd--apparently improvized sitcom section about that day's show and star "popping by the house/set", followed by the actual talk show portion. I'd love to see it again to see if it really was as lovable as I recall or if I was just drunk.
- Merv really did go after the boys, didn't he? I remember Denny Terrio from Dance Fever (?) suing him, claiming that Merv came out of the bathroom in a leopard g-string and tried to mount him. "Merv! I'm not ready," Denny said, to no avail. The horror!

- Dorothy Kilgallen and her husband, Broadway producer and actor Dick Kollmar, hosted from their own apartment (and later their townhouse) a morning talk show called "Breakfast With Dorothy and Dick" on WOR radio from 1945 to 1963. As a producer and a Broadway-columnist, the couple lived a glittering life of parties and premieres, nightclubs and swell society affairs. Even people who hated the couple felt compelled to tune in to hear what they had to say about the showbiz social scene.
Alas, their hard-partying ways finally caught up with them. Dorothy had to be hospitalized for addiction to prescription drugs. While she was locked away, Dick carried on the radio show alone. Then one morning after an all-night bender, he showed up to do the program blind drunk. He had to be physically restrained from taking the microphone. His scheduled guests, writer-director Josh Logan and his wife Nedda, were forced to ad-lib the entire hour themselves. Luckily they too were a sparkling couple, witty and gay (in every sense of the word) and they rose to the occasion.
The sponsor pulled the plug that day and after 18 years Dorothy and Dick breakfasted on the air no more. When Kilgallen returned from the sanitarium she was furious to discover that they had lost the show. It had been one of their primary sources of income.
- I'm sure many friends of Dorothy have breakfasted with dick.
- David Frost
Mike Douglas
Gypsy Rose Lee had a talk show in San Francisco.
Oscar Levant had a local talk show in L.A. that was legendary. People tuned in to watch his descent into madness.

- R137, yep Roseanne's show was surreal in its train-wreck awfulness. On the premiere episode she actually flew into the studio and over the audience suspended on wires, and that circus atmosphere was retained throughout its mercifully short run. She can be an incredibly self-indulgent performer, and when she isn't funny, she's painfully unfunny.
- I can't wait to listen to that tape of Dorothy and Dick!!!
I'm obseesed with Dorothy Kilgallen and fascinated with the idea of that radio program.
I can't imagine how two loose screws like the Kollmars ever managed to regularly haul themselves out of their (separate) beds every morning to rise to the occasion.
Thanks for posting r149!
- I remember Roseanne's show. She tried to offer Monica Lewinsky $2 million in order to land the first interview with her. Monica turned down the money to do the Barbara Walters interview instead.
I also remember that King World renewed the show for a second season and the affiliates were pissed. The studio was making money on it, but the affiliates were losing money and were furious they were obligated to keep airing it.
- Dorothy Kilgallen is practically forgotten today, but in the 50s and 60s she was a national celebrity.

- I was going to post about "My Talk Show"... Loved it too. Very odd show, but I love Cynthia Stevenson, who went on to be in movies like "Home for the Holidays" and tv shows like "Men in Trees"...IIRC they replaced her with that Southern lady comedian who was also on some sitcoms in the 90s , and it wasn't as good after that. It wasn't Brett Butler...Stephanie something I think.
I remember when Virginia Graham would pop up on All My Children in the 80s. I had no clue who she was until my mom told me. Between her massive hair and Phoebe's giant wig, you could barely see the set.

- Thank you, R144 and R142! Cynthia Stevenson! Because of that show, I'm alqays happy to see here whenever I come across her in something. And while that episode on YouTube doesn't quite live up to my memory of the show's greatness, it's nice to finally see some proof that it wasn't a show I made up in my sleep-deprived head!
