Back-seat driving

My friends do this to me constantly. I get very distracted when someone's talking to me in the car, and so they feel they have a right to tell me which way to turn if I'm not taking the most direct possible route. If I ask them to stop, they stop for a while but the next time I drive them they're back to doing it again. Why do people do it? is it just a control thing? It's really insulting if they're not worried they're lives (or someone else's life) is in danger, but just because they want to get somewhere faster.

• This doesn't sound like a problem most adults would have. Agree with r1; you must truly be an awful driver.

• Unless you're endangering them, passengers have absolutely no business telling you how to drive unless they are asked. They have to be told flat-out to knock it off. And r1 is just being a usual r1 cunt. (I am not sure what r5's excuse is.)

• No, R6. If someone is being horribly inefficient, telling them a better route is HELPING them, as well as helping the passenger. OP is just ignorant and unwilling to learn or take advice... too much a creature of habit I guess, unable to actually learn something new. People like the OP are far more annoying than those who offer suggestions for a better way.

• Since I wager this doesn't happen to most people, just to the OP, it's fair to assume the problem is with the OP.

• Passengers who insist on talking to the driver while the vehicle is in motion cause driver distraction. That's never a safe thing to do. If the driver doesn't mind going out of the way, why should a passenger? A friend years ago constantly monitored my driving, the only person who has ever done that. It was extremely irritating and distracting. After I warned him a couple of times one day, I pulled over to the curb and told him to get out of the car. He promised to shut up and he did from then on. Looking back on it, I believe he had a problem with OCD. My sister (whom we all referred to as the family fussbudget) used to do the same thing to my mother. "Watch out, that light is going to turn. Watch out, that car is pulling out of a parking spot." Child abuse would have been warranted.

• Just pull over at the nearest bus stop and ask them to get out. Problem solved!
