Ben Savage Joins 'Girl Meets World' (90s 'Boy Meets World' Sequel) Alongside Danielle Fishel
Ben Savage will be playing Cory Matthews once again! The actor has joined the cast of "Girl Meets World," the sequel series to the '90s ABC comedy "Boy Meets World," according to the Disney Channel. Danielle Fishel will also reprise her "Boy Meets World" role as Topanga Lawrence for the pilot.
Disney Channel confirms the pilot is still in "very early stages of development" and that a nationwide casting search is still underway for 13-year-old Riley Matthews. "Girl Meets World" will follow Cory (Savage) and Topanga's (Fishel) teen daughter Riley. "Boy Meets World" creator Michael Jacobs is behind the project.
The cast for "Girl Meets World" will also include Maya, Riley's edgy best friend. Sounds a bit like Shawn Hunter to us!
In the new series Cory will be a history teacher, just like his "Boy Meets World" mentor Mr. Feeny.
"I'm very excited for Disney and [creator] Michael Jacobs," William Russ, who played Cory's dad Alan Matthews on the series, said in a statement to HuffPost TV. "They are a great team and will produce an exceptional show, I have no doubt."
Anthony Tyler Quinn, who played Mr. Turner on "Boy Meets World," told HuffPost TV he'd be interested in appearing on the new series.
"'Boy Meets World' was and continues to be these beautiful brushstrokes in my life," he said. "It was a wonderful experience, and I think Michael's going to create something fresh. I'd love to be a part of it."
Tell us: Are you excited that Cory and Topanga might be back on TV?

In high school, I was totally in love with Rider Strong. I used to dream of threesomes with him & Matt Lawrence. That show had the best eye candy for a 17 y/o gay boy.
Mr. & Mrs. Savage did well. Ben & Fred are both handsome men. Ben is actually hot, which is somewhat surprising. There were some college-age pictures which weren't very flattering. Glad he transitioned through that phase.
Nice to see child actors grow up not fucked up & be able to have quiet success in the industry.

Back ON TOPIC (if only briefly)...
I remember watching this show when I was a kid. With all the shameless reboots, prequels, and sequels that Hollywood is coming up with, this actually seems like a clever concept to continue a show that was wholesome, funny, and successful. And the "continuation casting" is great.

Please tell me Rider Strong is gay. I vaguely remember watching some late-night interview back in the late '90s/early '00s where he was being interviewed and he was FLAMING. He mentioned going to Occidental College (very liberal arts college in LA) and that's the last I've seen or heard from him.

Almost certainly, R41. This is how the series should play out, though...
'Girl Meets World' sees Ben's character living with his gay Sri Lankan lover (Kal Penn), and raising an adopted 5th grade girl. Ben has lost his job as an insipid software programmer, and is pity-hired by hirsute ex-lover Rider Strong. The job is in the gayborhood, and Rider still has feelings for Ben. Hijinks ensue.

Rider followed the Obama path and transfered to Columbia, R39. And I can tell you that while there, he was quietly (albeit openly) gay. Or at least everyone I knew that met him said he was pretty open about it. And word traveled because the show was so big for our generation, and everyone was amazed that Shawn Hunter was a gay.
Admittedly, I never met him, but then I was a major closet case at the time anyway.

The show started its second season this week with five new episodes, including a visit to Mr. Feeney and a visit from Cory's other brother, Eric, who has gone from normal-acting (at the start of BMW) to idiot (by the end of BMW) to hippie peacenik weirdo. And he looks more like he'd be Shaun's brother than the Semitic Cory.
The show hasn't let up on its contrived storylines and didactically preachy, on-the-nose dialogue, occasionally borrowing BMW's tropes to score nostalgic laughs. And Lucas and Farkle make more sense as a couple than Lucas and Riley.

It looks like another Boy Meets World alum is headed to Girl Meets World. EW confirmed Thursday that Matthew Lawrence will bring his perfect hair and 6 percent body fat to the Disney spinoff.
He first appeared in season 5 as Shawn Hunter’s (Rider Strong) long lost (and overly confident) brother, Jack. When we last saw him in the series finale, he was headed to the Peace Corps with Rachel (Maitland Ward).
Lawrence will reprise his role in one episode this season, but no further details have been released. He joins a hefty list of former BMW cast members stepping into the GMW universe including Strong, Will Friedle, William Daniels, Trina McGee, Blake Clark, and Anthony Tyler Quinn.

Agree with R20 that Danielle turned out quite beautifully, she has a lovely figure and seems like a total doll, in a saucy kinda way. The idea of her being lez (mentioned upthread) surprises me, though..anyone flicked through her autobio for deets?
Rider has a mischievous, 'cute' look about him for a grown man, it's not a turn-off though. R9 is correct, Friedle/Lawrence were the sexiest ones in BMW (maybe because they were older?). Will's voice for 'Batman of the Future' Terry (in the cartoon Batman Beyond) is strangely hot.
Hard to believe Rider is gay, too. Maybe too difficult to imagine, because his character Shawn was girl-crazy in a very overt, physical way.

Same tbh. Posts here and elsewhere state he was known as Out and gay in College, but even if it was the case then, it certainly isn't anymore. It's not impossible that he just self-closeted again once he got back in front of a camera, but probably best to take it with a pinch of salt anyway.

Rider's older brother Shiloh is adorable and a half-decent actor (possibly the better of the two), but he mostly sticks to writing for television now after a couple of shows he was on in the 00's got cancelled. He's written a handful episodes for GMW, and probably will continue if it gets renewed (and Rider stays). They both seem like sweet nebbish boys and good brothers, if a little snobby about their education.
Shiloh was great on Dinotopia, as the nerdy but cute Jewish doctor in training/dinosaur trainer. Don't remember much about the show other than his character, and cabaret singer Lisa Zane's villainous queen character. They had unusually amazing chemistry for a shitty Hallmark show, and considering their age difference (she's nearly 18 years older than Shiloh), so knowing Lisa she probably tapped that. Go girl!

The Shawn & Maya relationship didn't play out right.
I get they were going for the surrogate family angle (as Shawn once was to the Matthews) but the writing overstated this and overshot their mark so their scenes became romantic. Initially I wasn't certain if Shawn was more interested in Katy (Maya's mother) or Maya herself. It was borderline inappropriate.
That said, I know this wasn't the intention of the actors or writers. Matters weren't helped by the fact that Rider Strong still looks quite young and boyish (less like a 39 y.o and more like an overworked 31) and truly-young Sabrina Carpenter with that heavy makeup looks 26 more than 16. Also, I think the Maya character would have worked better as a young lesbian starting to come out, but that's another story.

Both ‘Morgans’ showed up for the GMW finale, and one remarked “I don’t think we’ve ever been in the same place, before.”
Eric told Mr. Feeney off for never teaching him anything that stuck successfully, too.
GMW leant too heavily on the fourth wall.

The show was terribly didactic and seemed fully disconnected to real life. The dialogue was atrocious, bearing no resemblance to the way kids talk today. And they really missed the boat by making Farkle straight and flirtatious with both girls. He had more chemistry with Lucas and it would have been groundbreaking if

Farkle had a crush (requited or not) on Lucas. All in all, the show was terribly contrived and a vehicle for dopey 90s nostalgia.

Yes R67, GMW managed to get half of the original main cast back permanently and cameos for the rest; then it all went to waste on flimsy wiriting, boring new characters and cheap ‘throwback’ gags. There’s only so much relic-buffing and retrospection you can do in a new vehicle before it starts to seem quaint. GMW needed to hit harder & faster emotionally, and needed sharper & more current humor.
I didn’t like Riley or Maya, despite badly wanting to. Both girls were designed as parallels to their father figures but felt like sour & flattened counterparts to effervescent Cory & sensitive Shawn in their youth. Lucas was forgettable and watching Farkle always made me uncomfortable on some strange level. I didn’t feel happy to spend hours of time with these characters, and stuck around for the cameos alone.
Seeing Eric & Jack reunited essentially saved the final episodes for me. They still have wonderful chemistry, even though again GMW weighed it down with their sneery ‘bromance!!!’ approach to it.
