Huckleberry Finn and Jim

I've just been rereading the novel (first time since junior high school) and I am shocked by how much care they show for each other. Huck makes a moral choice against the rules of society to help Jim become free. There are many descriptions of Jim hugging and kissing Huck, and calling him "honey". Not to mention them hanging out on the raft naked all day long.
