Did Many Women Born In The Early 1900s Ever Experience An Actual Orgasm?
Considering the ideas surrounding sex, the female body, and a woman's role in society, do you think many women died without ever experiencing an actual orgasm? People weren't even aware of the role of the clitoris. A lot of women just had sex for their husband's pleasure. Women didn't want to be deemed a whore.
So do you think many women, our grandmothers (shudder), never experienced a real orgasm?
Kinda sad.
- Probably not
- Even today it is a difficult matter. Most men have no idea what to do with a woman's body. Check out the blog Kitty Kitty Korea. The writer is a very active slut that loves sex but even she said, she only came once with a man (and not because of fucking).
- I believe that some of them at least might have experienced that. I think that in each period, pleasure in sex is achievable for both sexes.
Even in the early 1900!
Conservatism doesn't mean that a woman couldn't enjoy sex, just because she couldn't speak of it.
An actual orgasm is about chemistry and not about a reasonable point of view.
- A lot of women didn't even understand masturbation. They couldn't even pleasure themselves.
- Just because everyone was ignorant about biology back then doesn't mean the female orgasm didn't exist. It's true that a lot of straight men suck in bed though. They are only concerned about their own pleasure and developed shitty habits from watching porn at an early age. The worst part is that, to an extent, it's still customary to fake it to preserve his ego. What a fucking waste.

- R4, i believe that masturbation was unavoidable for all even back then. Personally, i find it quite unrealistic for a woman not having touched her body with her hands. Of course many of them had done that and they tried not to realize that...however touching or examining one's body is a form of masturbation, you know.
I bet most women were touching their tits or their skin back then and then maybe after that they were feeling guilty. Lol.
- Agree with R5 about women having orgasms all through history but don't agree that "a lot of" straight men suck in bed. I'd say it's all evenly distributed between people who haven't a clue and those who do. I mean, all you have to do is pick up a book. My Dad always told me the woman comes first. I turned out gay. "Don't forget, the other guy comes first," he said. Ha.
- I'll never have an orgasm until I can stick an Oscar inside myself.
Meryl, can I borrow one of your three? PLEASE?

- A lot of straight men do suck in bed, unfortunately, as American men are not really comfortable with women and do not really like them. They are far more interested in computers, porn and televised sports than in the actual women in their lives.
Straight men go to prostitutes the most of any group in the world, which tells you a lot.
I do hope those ladies in their bustles and Gibson Girl hairdos managed to rock their own worlds through a little canny masturbation.
- I've found that "a lot" of lesbians try to convert straight women by downing straight men just as is being done in this thread. "Hey baby, let me give you the best/first orgasm you've ever had...a woman knows what a woman wants blah blah blah." Sex for lesbians can be a political act. Why is that?
- Most women can't achieve orgasm through vaginal sex, which is what most did in the 1900s. You also have to consider religion at the time. Women were shamed of their sexuality. They were also getting pregnant repeatedly thanks to no birth control. Sex had real consequences for them. I think some women were happy that their husbands ran around on them, as it meant they wouldn't get pregnant. Those Irish-Catholic women were walking clown cars.
Touching your own breasts, skin, etc, even if you consider that masturbation, we're talking about reaching orgasm.
- Lol R10. Interesting realization. But sorry ladies and gentlemen i have to disappoint you both.
According to statistics, most women experience orgasm during masturbation, not with the help of a man or a woman but by themselves. Hehe...
Of course that doesn't mean that they don't find pleasure in sex. We're talking about orgasms. A woman can feel pleasure in sex without having an orgasm.
- Times don't change the homosapien so quickly. Most women realize how to get off with their clit by nature. So, nothing has changed, whether it is spoken about or not. Same ol' same ol'.
- It's very strange to think that while so many me experience orgasm at least once daily - and have always done so - that so many women might never experience orgasm.
No wonder men and women are so different in some respects. Life with and without orgasms is a very different experience.
- r9 suffers from Aspergers and is foisting his warped social perceptions on the rest of us.
- A lesbian will experience her best orgasm with a lesbian, a gay man with a gay man and a straight woman with a straight man. But everything starts with the "fingas" as my sainted grandmother used to say.
- Why don't you go ask them, OP?
- Of course they did. Everyone is compelled through need to play with their genitals. What? You think if nobody told you, you'd never have an orgasm? Don't be stupid.
-
Rubbing and pressing fingers against certain areas of a woman's body is the key which can open her orgasm's door. Of course she has to have some hunger for sex otherwise...it won't work.
Penetration just finishes the job.
- I did, often, but it usually involved getting young men in the tub, shooting them up with heroin and drowning them.

- Another fags-obsessed-with-women-and-their-vaginas thread!
I'm amused that some people would think women started having orgasms after a certain date in time. This is so dumb I'm actually speechless. What's the IQ of people in this thread?
And so, why do women and their orgams pre 1900s or otherwise are a subject of interest to a bunch of gay men again?
- R21 maybe the OP is a woman. Calm down...
In Datalounge there are gays, lesbians, bisexual and straight people.
- Check out 'Hysteria' with Hugh Dancy. It is based on facts and one can't believe how backward men regarding women were.
- [quote]Why don't you go ask them, OP?
Get the shovel!
- Project much, R10?
- You're kidding, right, OP? If not, wow...
Human culture is vast and diverse, and women of all classes have talked and thought about sex long before Puritans, Victiorians, and ... let's face it, Americans ... started having an influence on culture.
There's ample evidence that cultures in Asia, Africa, and Europe in particular knew quite a bit about sex and pleasure, from the wealthy to the streets, there's been quite a bit of debauchery throughout time.
And you don't think any women had an orgasm before 1900?
Come on.
- Women get as horny as men. Masturbation doesn't need to be taught. It is a natural activity brought on by the body's own need for stimulation. Of course women of that period masturbated and of course they had orgasms.
- I would pinch my own teats to climax.
The Dowager
- The Dowager fuck you horny bitch.
ROFL!

- Surprisingly that dowdy, dumpy little Queen Victoria and Albert supposedly had quite a good sex life, going by her diaries. She reigned during one of the most repressed periods in history where they even had to cover table "limbs" with cloth.
- R27, We shouldn't generalize, as there's always plenty of variation. Some repressed their feelings and really followed the "close your eyes, lay back, and think of England" motto.
- OP, women born in the early 1900's came of age as the sexually liberated flappers of the 1920's.
- The hottest people are the worst candidates for relationships.
- Definitely maybe R34.
- [quote]And you don't think any women had an orgasm before 1900?
Someone can't read.
- It would be entirely possible for a perfectly healthy woman to live and die without an orgasm in those days.
Large families were the rule before birth control, and she'd be likely to share a bed or a room with a sister or two, so she'd have no privacy at all. The only discussion of sex she'd hear would be shaming in church, or older women bemoaning the effects of constant pregnancies. While still a teenager she'd marry a man who had no idea that women could orgasm, and who believed that no "good woman" took any pleasure from sex. And then the pregnancies would start, and the children, and she'd be back to no privacy...
Yes, that's a bit of a worst-case scenario, but it'd be a rare woman who didn't go through some of those things.
- [quote]And so, why do women and their orgams pre 1900s or otherwise are a subject of interest to a bunch of gay men again?
Yes, let's just talk of male sexuality and then you can have a rant about women being marginalized. Why is what "a bunch of gay men" post of interest to you?
- Women can't orgasm because they're spending too much time thinking about to fuck with the guy's head.
You know it's true...
- From what I hear of my straight girl friends, it is still a problem today. I think people of the same sex are more biologically and emotionally tailored to meet each other's needs in bed.
- People jack off, they always have they always will nothing ever changes.

- R41 is correct. At some point during childhood, everyone's hands wander south because it feels good to touch and rub---like scratching an itch. No one has to teach you, it just happens as if by instinct. For a lot of sexually naive girls their first orgasm is an accident that freaks them out. All they know is the touching feels good and then....BAM!
- OP must be speaking of women born in 1890 or earlier.
- I'm a woman. I discovered masturbation (and orgasms) at age nine. I was raised Catholic and taught nothing about sex (except that it's something that's only supposed to occur between one man and one woman who have been married in the Catholic church). I had no idea what it was that I was actually doing, and wondered if I was the only person who had ever discovered this ability. All I knew was that having an orgasm felt good and scratched some kind of itch. I didn't really think if it as a "sexual" thing, though on some level I must have known that it was.
Oh yeah, and I was so ignorant about anatomy that I didn't know that the vagina was a specific part of female genitalia. I thought the word "vagina" just referred to the whole area down there. I didn't know that I had a hole that existed to be penetrated. So needless to say, my early childhood masturbation experiences were centered completely around clitoral stimulation.
What R43 and others have said is spot on. It's an instinct. It requires no instruction. No amount of societal repression can completely overcome this simple biological fact. It's possible that it did for a few women, but I'm sure they were by far the exception.
- Maybe OP is referring to the vaginal orgasm and not the clitoral. Aren't vaginal orgasms the elusive ones that are supposed to be the holy grail of orgasms for most women?
- Genitals were considered 'dirty' then. Considering that even by 1900 bathing wasn't an every day occurrence for most people, most genitals probably were. I can understand people's repugnance in that respect.
- "I've found that "a lot" of lesbians try to convert straight women by downing straight men just as is being done in this thread. "Hey baby, let me give you the best/first orgasm you've ever had...a woman knows what a woman wants blah blah blah." Sex for lesbians can be a political act. Why is that? "
I am a lesbian and I've found straight sex can also be a political act. A lot of men believe that you as a woman have not found the right man, that being a lesbian is a waste of time, and that a big you-know-what can turn you straight. Why is that?
And yes, I have lived outside the US a large part of my life and I see that men outside America do pay more attention to women and are more interested in them. America is crawling with dull, unsexy, low-charm straight men. Although our gay brothers seem to like them for reasons of their own...

- r45 made me chuckle, since my experience was so similar. Except I think I was a bit younger, around 7. I had no idea what I was doing, I didn't connect it to anything "sexual," especially since I had no idea what sex was; and I thought I was the only one in the world who had discovered it. And yes, it's a very strong instinct, but I had been given a lot of privacy to "explore." Girls growing up way back when didn't have that kind of privacy, so I think it was a lot easier for urges to get repressed. I think it's very possible that some hands never had the opportunity to wander "down there."
- [quote]America is crawling with dull, unsexy, low-charm straight men. Although our gay brothers seem to like them for reasons of their own...
Which makes me think that r10 has never actually read any threads on here if he's never seen gay men "down" women or insist that gay men can give better head/pleasure straight men better than women can.
- There's no such thing as a female orgasm. Its a myth.
- [quote]but don't agree that "a lot of" straight men suck in bed. I'd say it's all evenly distributed between people who haven't a clue and those who do. I mean, all you have to do is pick up a book.
And how many straight men do you see running to pick up books to better inform themselves about how to get women off? Most straight men think porn movies are documentaries.

- Didn't women do it themselves?
I would say they did before 1975...and today too.
- R45 - all orgasms are clitoral.
- Lesbians smell bad. Why do they want to look like 55 year old truck drivers? Back in the day, they would have brought a covered wagon to the second date.
- Well, Babs Bush did have six children. Surely she must have had an orgasm at least one of the six times that she had sex with Poppy.
- I would sit on the butter churn.

- F&F R56. Shouldn't you be in school this morning? Middle school?
R57, having children has nothing to do with an orgasm, Poppy's is the only one necessary for that. Seeing that GHW Bush played around on the side, he must have brought home some tricks to Babs. Hence, she didn't have to do it herself some of the time.
- Multiple times– if Mark Twain's description in "Letters From The Earth" of women's sexual advantage over men is anything to go by.
- [quote]My Dad always told me the woman comes first. I turned out gay. "Don't forget, the other guy comes first," he said. Ha.

- I swear this is the dumbest thread on DL ever. And that's saying something. Have you ever read any literature from the era?
- No, and I'm pretty pissed. And still waiting.
- They used to treat hysteria in women in the 19th century by bringing them to orgasm, either manually or with an implement. Look it up.
- Haha, that's true R64. They even had spas that rich Victorian women would go to for "treatment" of hysteria. They would hook them up to various fuck machines and supposedly that would take care of the problem and make them all compliant. LOL.

- [quote]I think people of the same sex are more biologically and emotionally tailored to meet each other's needs in bed.
Another reason why life would be so much easier if we were all one sex.
- Seriously though, what a disgusting and disturbing lesser-spoken-about part of history (diagnosing women with hysteria and "professionally" orgasming them)...
- So I guess the answer is absolutely, they were getting off not only on medical orders, but they were gotten off by both men (doctors) and women (midwives).
