Generic for Lipitor Recalled Over Glass Bits

NEW JERSEY (KTLA) -- A generic form of the cholesterol lowering drug Lipitor has been recalled after some batches were found to contain pieces of glass. Indian pharmaceutical company Ranbaxy announced the voluntary recall on their website Friday, saying that 10-, 20-, and 40-milligram doses of the generic drug atorvastatin are affected. Over 40 lots of the drug, containing 90 pills per bottle and some with 500 pills per bottle, have been listed in the recall. Products at 80-milliliter strength are not affected, the company said. "Ranbaxy is proactively recalling the drug products lots out of an abundance of caution, and in keeping with the safety of our customers in mind." The company also said that the recall is being conducted "with the full knowledge" of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Ranbaxy is already operating under increased scrutiny from the FDA because of several instances of manufacturing trouble at its factories in recent years.
