Is this something new, because I couldn't imagine my mom being obsessed with this sort thing in her 30's or 40's. She watched a soap opera, but that's about it. I'd have been so embarrassed if she was going to Duran Duran and Billy Idol concerts and crying over them. Why are so many women that age acting like teen girls?

My theory is that film geared to adult audiences cater almost exclusively to hetero male desire, hence films usually cast an average joe middle aged guy with a supermodel in her 20s. Think about being a middle aged woman going with her husband to movie after movie with the above scenario. However, teen girls and young women are a target audience that gets to actually see young beautiful men is the media created for their consumption. Think about the Twilight franchise casting versus most mainstream movies made for a general audience.

When did women in their 30s or 40s start to be labeled middle aged? When I was a kid, people in their 50s were considered middle aged, that applied to men and women.
