• If you love this film, check out the audio commentary on the DVD, it's awesome. A large portion of the film was shot by just going out in NYC, using telephoto lenses to shoot so the crew wasn't up on the actors all the time and could act while normal life was going on. For one sequence, they drove up on the freeway, created a traffic jam, filmed it and left before any police came. Loads of stories, including why Hackman's character asks a perp if he 'picks his toes in Palookaville?'

• Saks in NYC got rid of the elevator operators, then they went to self service elevators, and in the 80's put in escalators...time marches on! As for the reason--more efficient and cheaper for the Companies than a paid employee.

• R5, I never understood why they had them in the first place. If all you had to do was press a button to go up or down. Another thing I don't get that I hear they still have is bathroom attendants? First of all, why would you want someone else in the bathroom while you take a dump? And secondly, why would someone want that job? When I use a public bathroom I can't go if there's someone in the next stall, and I don't particularly like to hear/smell people doing their business.
