A planet has been discovered, 13 times the size of Jupiter.
[quote]Scientists using the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii have discovered a "super-Jupiter" orbiting around the bright star Kappa Andromedae. The planet, which is about 13 times the size of Jupiter, glows with a reddish color and skirts the line between planet and star on account of its tremendous mass. Moreover, its parent star now holds the record for the most massive sun known to host a directly imaged planet or lightweight brown dwarf companion.

- Wau!
- Can we build McMansions on it?
- Is that the Planet X that will cause chaos during the end of the Mayan calender??
- Stop the Chris Christie bashing!
- LOL!!!
- That's no planet! That's my ovary!
Octavia S.
- It's a planet that was made out of the collected negative energy of bitter Romney voters. Is it any wonder it was discovered after the election?
- Hot!
No, literally, hot.
- Is it an insatiable bottom?
- 170 light years is really close
- Astronomers are nothing but a bunch of fickle size queens.
Jupiter
- I'm not a scientist, man! It could be a large planet, or perhaps just a very large, angry turnip.
Marco Rubio
- Close on astronomical scales, yes. Too bad each light year is still 6 trillion miles.
Voyager 2 has been travelling at 38,120 miles per hour since 1977, and is still only 11 billion miles from the Sun. It will take 17,565 years for Voyager 2 to travel a complete light year.

Science Nerd
- Yup, size matters here.
Pluto
- I hear that Kappa Andromedae is an insatiable bottom.
- It astounds me that we are finding planets in other solar systems. I honestly thought we were a unique solar system in the universe. I still don't believe there can be life on any other planet, but I could see how fantasy authors could make that leap.
- Of course there has to be life somewhere else, R16. Either you believe in American, er, Earthling exceptionalism, or you have to admit that chemical elements and stellar lifecycles work the same throughout the known universe.
- [quote]I honestly thought we were a unique solar system in the universe.
R16, you cannot possibly be that stupid and/or uneducated. Please tell me you are trolling. And if you're not, please go and read some basic science books now. A great introduction for people who know nothing about science is "A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson.
- R3, Planet is supposed to be much closer than that.

- It's the planet where all actors egos are stored.
- There has to be some kind of life form on a planet that massive.
- I hope it doesn't decide to crash into earth.
- [quote]I honestly thought we were a unique solar system in the universe.
That has to rank right up there as one of the most idiotic statements posted on DL.
[quote]The universe may glitter with far more stars than even Carl Sagan imagined when he rhapsodized about billions upon billions. A new study suggests there are a mind-blowing 300 sextillion of them, or three times as many as scientists previously calculated. That is a 3 followed by 23 zeros. Or 3 trillion times 100 billion.
And out of all of those stars, you somehow think that we're it? You can't possibly be serious.

- [quote]There has to be some kind of life form on a planet that massive.
There really doesn't. The existence - or otherwise - of life on a planet has to do with many other elements than just size. There are a myriad of requirements that a planetary body needs to have in *just the right* combination to be able to sustain life.

- Not as big as Jennifer Lawrence!
Jessica%20Chastain
- Incredible, to witness such wonders in one's lifetime.
- The years have not been kind to what was a really greasy, ugly face even it its prime.
- And someday I will rule it.

DOOMED, I say! The Alumqui are near!

- I like R27.
- Janet Jackson's career is much bigger than that planet. Plus she is so much prettier!
- It must have an enormous schvanstigger.
- I love R13. More factoids, please.
- If you laid every star ed to end, I wouldn't be surprised.
