r7, they're really more living fossils--they're thought to have existed as they are for so long that none of their ancient relatives are still around for us to know.
Raccoons are probably their closest cousins; a common ancestor with panda bears or regular bears would be much further back.
Thank you R9 and R14.
I hope they're more charming creatures than raccoons. I watched a documentary on PBS last week about urban raccoons and how they've come to terrorize every country that imported them as pets because they looked cute. They're devastating ancient temples in Japan.
Yes, except for meere(sp?) cats.
Watch the vid of this little guy having his milk. He's like an itty bitty vacuum cleaner.
Red pandas are cute but their basically raccoons with better style.
Coatis are more raccoon-y.
There is a large troop of them living on the grounds of that hotel at Iguassu Falls in S. America.
Cute, cute, cute
Red pandas are also called firefoxes, R7, and that's where Mozilla got the name. Mozilla is a non-profit and one of the things they do is support red pandas at a zoo - don't remember which one - and they had a live feed of the babies. I understand that they've retired the link, though.
