I'll be alone as usual, just another day with everything closed. My mother lives on the other side of the country, and my brother will be there for Christmas; I'll be going after New Years.
Of course they do; they already received their gifts early from Barack Obama.
I'm not looking forward to Thanksgiving let alone Christmas.
Does anybody hold a gun to people's heads and tell them to spend like crazy?
If people associate reckless spending with the holiday, they have no one to blame but themselves for allowing Madison Avenue to run their lives.
I can understand some reasons for not enjoying it or not celebrating it. Like not having family to share it with, or having a completely screwed up family that you have to spend time with. But it just seems stupid to me that people would rather skip something altogether than use basic common sense.
Skipping the holidays means no time away from work.
r1, don't you live in an area with a fairly vibrant gay "scene"? Unless you are female, I would recommend going to the baths on xmas day, I always do, it's a great way to pass the time; soaking in the jaccuzi, steaming in the sauna, getting laid, watching porn, etc. There is quite often a number of activities gay bars organize on xmas day too. Best of all, at the baths you can shut out all the xmas crap outside as everyone else is there at least partly for the same reason.
Thanks [R6], but I'm really very nerdy.
R6. I'm all for going to the baths; I do it often. However, once I went there on Thanksgiving--later in the day when you would have thought people were done with family, etc. The baths are not the hotbed of activity you desscribed on the actual holiday. It's a rather lonely place.
Stay away from the baths on holidays if you want to maintain your self-esteem.
Well r8, that's saying if you care more about "hooking up" with someone. I can take it or leave it. If there are only a few guys there I sort of make believe it is my own private sauna, jaccuzzi etc. and have it all to myself. Can't find anybody?, watch some porn and jack off. Life doesn't come to an end just because it seems "lonely"--talk to the attendants if you want to be sociable. If it's dead they probably wouldn't mind shooting the shit with someone.
And surely, on Christmas, you could lower your high standards for a bathhouse and spread a little... charity. Bring canned food to the fire stations and a little Christmas to the bathhouse.
I'm with R3. I don't want to be bothered with either holiday. I just want it all to be over.
R9. I don't mind being alone; not a problem. I kind of like going to the baths on occasion and slipping into the wolrd of anonymity. However, there's something about beating your head over the fact that you're alone on a holiday by spending it at the baths--and that's when it can crossover into lonliness.
As I said, to maintain your self-esteem, stay away from the baths on the actual holiday. It's not worth it--and there's nothing going on anyway. If you want to watch porn alone, stay home.
20% of Americans do not identify as Christian. I wonder how many of this 45% who would prefer to skip Christmas do identify as Christian?
I saw news coverage of the upset Walmart employees. The greed has no bounds. And I don't intend to participate.
I knew it! I mentioned in the 'Gawd, I hate Christmas' thread that there are plenty of people who dislike Christmas, but they just do not voice their dislike and keep it to themselves.
Christmas in the U.S. is all about spending money on gifts. It's Giftmas that Americans focus on in November and December.
The Christmas season can be great. There are all kinds of concerts and shows. There is a lot of classical music that isn't available or played at other times of the year.
It can be fun just to ride around looking at lights and decorated store windows. When you totally eliminate Giftmas, you can have a great time. I organize friends into going to festive events. It's more rewarding to spend money on doing things with friends than exchanging gifts.
Forty-five percent are Athiests.
How many slimy Jews were included in this survey?
Not all Christians are so dumb as to believe that Christmas, as we know it, has anything to do with Christ's birthday or the significance of Christ. Some are actually against celebrating Christmas in any way.
As much as we dread it and make fun of it, when you really stop to think about it, Thanksgiving is a pretty hip holiday, especially compared to Christmas.
No real point or message other than the general "give thanks," only one day, always on Thursday so you're guaranteed a 4 day weekend, no gifts, meal prep is simple--you cook a turkey. Really, if you designed a holiday from scratch, it would be hard to improve on Thanksgiving. Well, maybe costumes and candy . . .
Did you know that kids used to trick or treat, not on Halloween, but on Thanksgiving? See link.
This is the time of year when fraus try to spread their phony "good will" and "cheer", and if you try to keep them at arm's length the respond with "ohhhhhhh, yer jist an old grinch aren't cha!?" Sometimes it works if I tell them I'm Jewish and sometimes they'll say, "well, happy hannukah then" stupidly under the ridiculous assumption that hannukah is "the Jewish christmas". I don't dare tell them I'm Muslim/Moslem lest I run the risk of being lynched.
