wikipedia on Diamonds are Forever:
Producer Harry Saltzman hated the song and it only made the film due to co-producer Albert Broccoli. One of Saltzman's major objections was to the innuendo in the lyrics. Bassey would later return for a third performance for 1979's Moonraker.
What innuendo? Boy times have changed?
That's Dame Shirley Bassey . . .
OP= oh, so glad to be gay.
I believe, r4, the song lyrics suggest that diamonds can act as a substitute for men. The innuendo is.... just how literal is that?
They are all I need to please me
They can stimulate and tease me. Etc etc
Saw a good biopic on the telly about her whilst in London last fall. Wonder if it's available on the internets.
Oh and she married a gay you know.
(note the use of britishisms: telly, whilst)
She fucked Peter Finch . . . in his prime.
I Who Have Nothing... the song every queen wants to sing during a bitter breakup!
Supposedly she was considered for the role of Nancy in the Oliver film.
Does anyone remember her British TV show. They flew around her on a helicopter in the titles while she stood on some oil derrick in the North Sea.
Used to see her in LA at the Greek. She was and is truly a fabulous entertainer...the whole package.
She was always full of herself, with a bit of a chip, but that maybe comes from being Biracial and living in Wales, I don't know.
I thought she was amazing on the Oscars. The James Bond thing was amazing.
Check out her early 70s album: SOMETHING, I CAPRICORN, NEVER NEVER NEVER and AND I LOVE YOU SO. Probably the best vocals of her recording career.
I really never knew much about her until heard a drag queen named Liz cover Shirley's "Gone" at Lipps in NYC (shut up, it was the 90s).
Loved the song so I got one of her greatest hits CDs. It's awesome. "Gone" is my favorite, but there or many other greats by Dame Shirley.
