- Conservatives jackasses will of course blame the unions.
I say, if you want Hostess cherry pies or whatever, quit your job and be a Hostess scab.
Otherwise STFU Republican asswipes.
- You should see the outcry on the Hostess Facebook page. Whining and blaming Obama because they can't stuff their face with a Twinkie anymore.
- Republicans forget unions are just as American as Wonder Bread.
- I do hope they continue to make the Wonder Bread English muffins! Tasty!
- WHEN I began researching the ingredients for Twinkies, I naively thought that their raw materials were extracted from nuts, beans, fruit, seeds or leaves, and that they came from the United States. I was looking to link places with foods -- along the lines of California wine or Maine lobster, but for thiamine mononitrate. It turned out that I was way off.
Although eight of the ingredients in the beloved little snack cake come from domestic corn and three from soybeans, there are others -- including thiamine mononitrate -- that come from petroleum. Chinese petroleum. Chinese refineries and Chinese factories. And there are other unexpected ingredients that are much harder to trace. So much for the great "All-American" snack food.

- A fine old American company looted by a succession of corporate raiders, and now that there's nothing left they walk away from the carcass.
Frito-Lay or Bimbo down in Mexico will snap up the brands and re-launch the products. The only losers are the poor guys who worked at the bakeries.
- Heh Heh. Suck it, bitches.
Little Debbie
- Exactly, R7. They're scape-goating the union, but the real villans here are the corporate raiders. Like the kind Romney used to be.
- It was the union this time that was greedy and it bit them in the ass. Now 18,OOO people are out of a job before X-mas. AND where the hell am I going to find my beloved Ho-Ho's!!
- I need to relax. How about I get out my sterling silver serving tray and fill it with twinkies.
Ann%20Blyth
- R10, you go ahead and keep believing that.
(rolling eyes)
So tired of idiots always blaming unions. Consider that there was a REASON they were striking, and I assure you it wasn't greed. Well, not their OWN greed, anyway.
- Damn, the chocolate cupcakes are the bomb.
- Someone will pick up the most popular items (Twinkies) and start manufacturing them. It happened with Mother's Cookies - out of business, shut down, then resurrected.
- R10 do you mean the greedy union that was just asking to at least keep the same wages and benefits that the workers had in their old contract? Please drive your Hoveround into the ocean so you can be with the rest of your whale brethren.
- And the blood ran Snowball Pink in Aisle 7 that day.
- Only one hostess product that I'm aware of is "super delicious"... and that's their crumb-cake coffe-cake squares. Those things are amazingly good.
The cherry and lemon pies are okay, but dear god, they're a nutritional nightmare (more calories than a big mac).
Everything else is rather flavorless, and mostly just 'Sweet' these days.
I should go try to hoard any remaining crumb-cakes I can find. Thankfully, being Hostess, they'll last for months.
- The crumb cakes are good; I never see them around which is a good thing.
- R14, Didn't know that Mothers' Cookies had resurrected. Thanks for the info. Now at least you can buy them without the dreaded high-fructose corn syrup.
- They also wanted profits from the company you tool[R15] 25 percent ownership. They played chicken and lost. Understand , pinhead?
- I posted in the Little Debbie thread praising Little Debbie, so I'll add my 2 cents here.
It wasn't the unions, it was a series of corporate raiders and insiders filling their pockets. They've been bleeding this company white since the 1970's--slowly at first, and for the last decade they haven't even bothered to hide it.
They cheapened the products, they loaded the company with debt, they didn't invest in technology; I could go on and on, but this simply didn't need to happen.
I worked for them 30 years ago when they were still a fine organization, and it breaks my heart to think of all those people out of work and all those magnificent bakeries shut down.
Read the Wikipedia page and look at the history of the company since 1975. One corporate raider after another.

- I don't know about the Chinese chemicals, in my day we were still using cane sugar instead of HFCS, so I'm sure it's a different world today.
I will say this, I worked for their major competition, and they tried hard to match the Hostess Cakes product for product. They came close on everything, Hostess was always better, but not by much, except for the Twinkie.
No matter what they tried they could never touch the Twinkie for taste, color, mouth feel, or anything else. It drove them crazy. Just the color, that perfect, even sunshine color the Twinkie has (had?), was insanely difficult to duplicate, much less do it uniformly every day in bakeries all over the United States.
And that wasn't because of management, that was because some union employees cared enough and knew enough to run 300 foot long ovens 10 hours a day and make the constant manual adjustments necessary to produce an exceptional product.

- It's not about the union victory or loss, fucktard. It's about the blatent greed of those in charge, who ran the business in the ground, and 18,000 people out of a job, in order to line their own pockets.
What part of that are you not getting?

- As the company was preparing to file for bankruptcy earlier this year, the then CEO of Hostess was awarded a 300 percent raise (from approximately $750,000 to $2,550,000) and at least nine other top executives of the company received massive pay raises. One such executive received a pay increase from $500,000 to $900,000 and another received one taking his salary from $375,000 to $656,256.

- R102 actually Union management salaries are NOT on the same level. They did not take a 300% increase.
You can also criticize them for being overpaid but the fault here lies totally with the management.
- Why doesn't the union buy the company out of bankruptcy?
All they have to do is offer more than the liquidation value of the business, which will be low, and the bankruptcy court will let them buy it.
They can fire all of management and run it like they want to. Of course, if the business continues to lose money, it will be their money lost, not the money from investors.
Or, the backers of thinkprogress or the people on here who believe it is just management's fault can do the same.
Money%20talks%2C%20bullshit%20walks
- Why didn't this go to binding arbitration?
- Because the CEOs were mad that Obama was elected...so they said, let's bust a union! If it were up to me, I'd be busting the heads of a few CEOs...I'd love to see that. Is there any way the employees could sue these CEOs and get into their offshore bank accounts?
- R106, because the business was in bankruptcy. They had no cash left. You can't make a company stay in business.
In bankruptcy, anyone can approach the court and offer to buy the business. It goes to the group who offers the best price and the money then is allocated to the investors who own the debt in the business.
If you buy the business as is, you inherit the plants and the employees and their union contracts.
No one, not a single group, thought they could run the business profitably so the winning bid now is by someone who will sell off the land and the rights to make the brands.
The bottom line is that the inherent costs of the business are too high - the costs being primarily the salaries. This is combined with the relative unappealing aspect of the products - Twinkies are not exactly following the current nutritional trends.
- They were demanding their workers take cuts in pay and benefits. Look into their history and see if the management CEOs ever took any cuts in pay. Or if shareholders profits went up up up while workers pay stayed the same.
- R109, you do understand that any equity shareholders lost ALL of their invested money in this deal.....
That is what generally happens in bankruptcy.
They did not shut down the company and walk away with a bunch of profits on their investment.
Shocking how little some of you understand about this
- [quote]Because the CEOs were mad that Obama was elected...so they said, let's bust a union!
The CEO was an outspoken supporter of Obama, idiot.
- Oh really? And you are going to tell me that the CEO and the board did not rip off the company? Instead of making changes to fix the company, they obviously robbed the company of all it's profits. The CEO is at the top...he's paid to keep the company going. The union had already made concessions. I might be an idiot but I don't mind saying, if those at the top would stop taking all the profits...they could keep a company running and keep people employeed.
- Hostess products including Twinkies are still manufactured in Quebec,Canada by Saputo Inc's Vachon Incorporated.
They do export to the USA so I wouldn't bother with stocking up or ebay scams.
Wait and see if Vachon picks up the slack.
- I wish the union could buy the company. I think it's always good if the employees own a share of the company then the success of the company, is on their shoulders.
- Since I know five people who have just lost their jobs (three of them 1-3 years away from retirement), I do know the higher ups will be getting a few million $, so they did have a few bucks left.
- The last round of concessions were a sham, just cheap theater for the press. The company was shelled, there was no way anyone could have taken the existing operation and made it run at this point. Remember, they were hours from this same result back in 2004, and this time it was even worse.
The Teamsters took their deal, and the company has already failed to keep their promises or make the required payments for health and pensions.
Even if the union had taken this deal, the company would have gone into liquidation in a matter of months (maybe weeks) unless the hedge funds already invested came up with millions more, and one of the hedge funds has already walked away and the other had zero interest in throwing good money after bad.
They were also already closing bakeries as fast as they could, so a large percentage of the workers would have been terminated over the next several months anyway.
Everyone involved realizes that the only value this company has are the brand names, and by liquidating now the hedge funds can do a clean deal for those, maybe sell a few of the better bakeries to the new buyer (they have to bake them somewhere and we're talking very specialized factories that would take months to build from scratch), so maybe 50% of the employees wind up working for the buyer, and long term (12 months or so) that's probably as many, if not more, than would have kept their jobs if they had taken the contract.
The logical buyer is probably Bimbo, and they already operate union bakeries across the US. The Hostess employees will almost certainly get first shot with Bimbo.
This was not an irrational act by the union even if the press and the PR machine is spinning it that way. And if you believe the script for this little soap opera isn't already
written and agreed to by Hostess, Bimbo, the Unions, and probably the Bankruptcy Court, you're naive.

Unions can buy companies. The unionized employees at United Airlines used to own a majority of the business (before it went into bankruptcy).
The union employees at Hostess were offered 25% ownership of the company if they would accept the deal that they turned down.
The union (or anyone) could still buy the company today if they are willing to pay more than liquidation value.
