Conservatives jackasses will of course blame the unions.
I say, if you want Hostess cherry pies or whatever, quit your job and be a Hostess scab.
Otherwise STFU Republican asswipes.
You should see the outcry on the Hostess Facebook page. Whining and blaming Obama because they can't stuff their face with a Twinkie anymore.
Republicans forget unions are just as American as Wonder Bread.
I do hope they continue to make the Wonder Bread English muffins! Tasty!
WHEN I began researching the ingredients for Twinkies, I naively thought that their raw materials were extracted from nuts, beans, fruit, seeds or leaves, and that they came from the United States. I was looking to link places with foods -- along the lines of California wine or Maine lobster, but for thiamine mononitrate. It turned out that I was way off.
Although eight of the ingredients in the beloved little snack cake come from domestic corn and three from soybeans, there are others -- including thiamine mononitrate -- that come from petroleum. Chinese petroleum. Chinese refineries and Chinese factories. And there are other unexpected ingredients that are much harder to trace. So much for the great "All-American" snack food.
Gross as they are, I used to like their apple pies. Maybe I'll stockpile a few.
A fine old American company looted by a succession of corporate raiders, and now that there's nothing left they walk away from the carcass.
Frito-Lay or Bimbo down in Mexico will snap up the brands and re-launch the products. The only losers are the poor guys who worked at the bakeries.
Heh Heh. Suck it, bitches.
Exactly, R7. They're scape-goating the union, but the real villans here are the corporate raiders. Like the kind Romney used to be.
It was the union this time that was greedy and it bit them in the ass. Now 18,OOO people are out of a job before X-mas. AND where the hell am I going to find my beloved Ho-Ho's!!
I need to relax. How about I get out my sterling silver serving tray and fill it with twinkies.
R10, you go ahead and keep believing that.
So tired of idiots always blaming unions. Consider that there was a REASON they were striking, and I assure you it wasn't greed. Well, not their OWN greed, anyway.
Damn, the chocolate cupcakes are the bomb.
Someone will pick up the most popular items (Twinkies) and start manufacturing them. It happened with Mother's Cookies - out of business, shut down, then resurrected.
R10 do you mean the greedy union that was just asking to at least keep the same wages and benefits that the workers had in their old contract? Please drive your Hoveround into the ocean so you can be with the rest of your whale brethren.
And the blood ran Snowball Pink in Aisle 7 that day.
Only one hostess product that I'm aware of is "super delicious"... and that's their crumb-cake coffe-cake squares. Those things are amazingly good.
The cherry and lemon pies are okay, but dear god, they're a nutritional nightmare (more calories than a big mac).
Everything else is rather flavorless, and mostly just 'Sweet' these days.
I should go try to hoard any remaining crumb-cakes I can find. Thankfully, being Hostess, they'll last for months.
The crumb cakes are good; I never see them around which is a good thing.
R14, Didn't know that Mothers' Cookies had resurrected. Thanks for the info. Now at least you can buy them without the dreaded high-fructose corn syrup.
They also wanted profits from the company you tool[R15] 25 percent ownership. They played chicken and lost. Understand , pinhead?
I posted in the Little Debbie thread praising Little Debbie, so I'll add my 2 cents here.
It wasn't the unions, it was a series of corporate raiders and insiders filling their pockets. They've been bleeding this company white since the 1970's--slowly at first, and for the last decade they haven't even bothered to hide it.
They cheapened the products, they loaded the company with debt, they didn't invest in technology; I could go on and on, but this simply didn't need to happen.
I worked for them 30 years ago when they were still a fine organization, and it breaks my heart to think of all those people out of work and all those magnificent bakeries shut down.
Read the Wikipedia page and look at the history of the company since 1975. One corporate raider after another.
Bad management and CEOs robbing the company and destroying pension plans. Same ol' same ol'. Until our nation protects us from these thieves...we should do the job ourselves.
Did the unions say get the ingredients from Chinese oil refineries and factories? I don't think so.
I am BEREFT!
No "Ho Ho's" here in La Jolla after what these Ding Dongs have done! I just hope things don't Snowball even further!
I SAID I hated anything to do with the smell of grease.
union busting plutocrats. I hope this blows up in their faces
I fear to think what raw materials the new Chinese owners of these brands, will make their Twinkies from!
Obama killed Twinkies!!! I knew this would happen!! GET.OFF.THE FUCKING.INTERNET!!!
Well to be honest I can't imagine the ingredients would be any worse than they already are. Weren't Twinkies supposed to be able to survive a Nuclear Holocost?
For junk food, Little Debbie's stuff is far superior to Hostess.
No more Ding Dongs for you, young lady!!
I guess the Chinese petroleum ingredient explains why those nasty Twinkies were always so greasy.
There goes my last chance of enjoying their raspberry doughnuts again.
Link please R20.
As long as Dolly Madison finds a new home, I'm fine.
Insert snowball/twinkie joke here.
Ah...if you want donuts, Krispy Kremes.
Oh, crap. They own Drakes, too.
I don't know about the Chinese chemicals, in my day we were still using cane sugar instead of HFCS, so I'm sure it's a different world today.
I will say this, I worked for their major competition, and they tried hard to match the Hostess Cakes product for product. They came close on everything, Hostess was always better, but not by much, except for the Twinkie.
No matter what they tried they could never touch the Twinkie for taste, color, mouth feel, or anything else. It drove them crazy. Just the color, that perfect, even sunshine color the Twinkie has (had?), was insanely difficult to duplicate, much less do it uniformly every day in bakeries all over the United States.
And that wasn't because of management, that was because some union employees cared enough and knew enough to run 300 foot long ovens 10 hours a day and make the constant manual adjustments necessary to produce an exceptional product.
I've always admired the exceptional craftsmanship of the Twinkie.
They own Drakes, too?! Well, off to buy the last of the Devil Dogs...
Ho'ho's have 13 grams of saturated fat.
I went to Skate America a few years ago and was quite shocked to see a frau pull Hostess cupcakes out of her coat to munch on them whilst the ladies were doing their practice runs.
Ugh...I really love those cupcakes with the white swirls and fudge (?) topping. Little Debbie's cupcakes just can't compare. Oh well, I need to get back on my Sugar Busters diet anyway.
god i love hostess products. i'm 44 now, and have been eating hostess cupcakes and the apple fruit pie my whole life.
I'm gaining weight just reading this thread.
Hostess products are not edible. As a child I thought they looked cute, and finally got to taste one; never again. When you next visit Vegas, dine out at Simon's in Palms Place, next to Palms Casino. Formerly at Hard Rock, Simon's has duplicated many Hostess desserts but made them far healthier and truly delicious. There are also online copycat recipes for all of your favorite junk food.
They are divine when drunk..
They are tasty, but there are a LOT of additives in their products. A LOT.
Stopped by the store at lunch.
Twinkies were completely sold out.
I snagged two boxes of Cinnamon Streusel Coffee Cakes. Those things are awesom.
So...... 5,000 people don't mind taking another 18,000 with them. Morons!
The newly unemployed 18,000 should get together and kick their asses.
union busting plutocrats. I hope this blows up in their faces
Doubt it will. They sell of the right to manufacture the best selling products to another company and they get a big payday.
Hostess also owns Entenmann's. Damn it.
I have a friend who's husband works for them. He wasn't for the strike but as of this morning he has no job. He is the sole breadwinner of the family also. She's says they now have to file for food stamps and unemployment. Scary. They were just getting by from week to week and he really liked his job.
Hostess also owns Entenmann's. Damn it.
Um, no they don't. Entenmann's is owned by Groupo Bimbo. Groupo Bimbo also owns Sara Lee.
Mother's cookies never brought back their best cookies...Flaky Flix!
Oh, and Bimbo already owns Wonder Bread in Mexico, so they will likely get the rest of their items now as well to distribute here as well as in Mexico.
Mother's cookies never brought back their best cookies...Flaky Flix!
No, but Keebler has the same thing with their Fudge Sticks
I have a friend who's husband works for them. He wasn't for the strike
He should have been. It's in solidarity that people get health benefits, weekends off, worker's comp, etc. etc. etc. etc.
It WAS the fucking union this time.
UNIONS FUCK UP SOMETIMES.
No, R63, it wasn't. Management gave themselves over 300% in pay increases... while asking employees to take deep pay cuts.
It was NOT the Union. It was executive greed. Period.
Two Twinkies = 300 calories. Two shots of Vodka (no mixer) = 240 calories. #JustSayin
R54, stop being a moron.
Stop blaming the workers. The workers did not drive the company into bankruptcy.
The robber-barrons and vampire-capitalists did. They loaded the company up with debt, gave themselves huge raises, and are now making off like bandits while putting 18,000 people out of work.
LEARN TO FUCKING BLAME THE RIGHT PEOPLE, DAMMIT.
Nope. If Hostess had been properly unionized and FUCKING TREATING ITS WORKERS PROPERLY from the get-go, then this would not have happened. Instead they let kids get untreated for cancer and men and women working unpaid over-time in order to reap in profits. Like many businesses in the U.S., because capitalism in its pure state is a sociopathic maw that devours with relish.
I think you're all missing the main tragedy in all of this: I've just lost 30% of the food products that comprise my regular diet.
This is just pretext Hostess was planning to close and reopen in Mexico anyway and gets to use the workers as fall guys and kick them out of a job. Nice. But that's how we dooze it.
Mmmm... Twinkie Bimbos.
Hostess, Applebee's, Denny's, Papa John's = shitty food and shitty politics
November is such a cunt:
-Colorado weed harshed by the death of Hostess
-CIA nerd porn ruined by Republican Socialite Sluts (from Mars)
-Fingerbang Elmo destroyed by an Emmanuel Lewis Anorexic
-Thanksgiving feasts wasted on bitter family
I'm sorry for the people who will lose their jobs because of this, but Hostess products are and always have been flavorless crap with no redeeming nutritional value, and their disappearance from supermarkets will be no loss to the worlds of food and health. The person carrying on about Hostess's superior products and once-magnificent bakeries is insane.
The workers did not drive the company into bankruptcy.
The company was already in bankruptcy. The unions were asked to take an 8% pay cut to get the company OUT of bankruptcy. They refused and went on strike.
Now they all get a 100% pay cut.
That worked out really well for them. Hope they're happy.
Freep off, freeper-scab at R54.
Sorry - I mean R75, not R54.
I used to love the cherry pies but in recent years they appeared to be 90% lard. and the Twinkies weren't spongey, they were too soft.
I take it back - R54 can freep off as well.
Gross as they are, I used to like their apple pies. Maybe I'll stockpile a few.
I know! Except I stopped eating them when I used the weight watchers formula to determine their point value. 14. Which, if I was on weight watchers, is like a complete meal. They're terrible for you.
That, and if I ate one at lunch i'd be a sugar zombie for the rest of the afternoon.
I wonder if there will be an SNL skit about this. Maybe in connection with the legalization of marijuana in Washington and Colorado? Or with Mittens saying that he never would have allowed this to happen in HIS America?
r75, the cut was 4% not 8% which was the best union leaders could negotiate. Members weren't happy, so now they have a 100% pay cut.
The cupcakes were so good in the '70s that I used to savor each element - the deep, dark, moist and chocolatey cake, the fluffy creme filling, even the little squiggle had character and flavor.
But that was the '70s and Hostess has been crap for at least 20 years.
I gotta tell ya though, those orange cupcakes are still crackalicious.
I love to split the cupcakes in half and put a scoop of vanilla ice cream in between. Sigh.
Well, I guess this is what happens when you show your Ding Dong to a HO HO, you Twinkies!!
This, R86, THIS is why you should stop drinking.
Twinkies are the best snacks ever!!
Baked good with minimal nutrition value have no place on our nation's tables.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg
If it was good enough for General Motors, Uncle Sam should take over Hostess.
R83, you're missing the point.
The CEO's pay TRIPLED. Other executives had 80% pay raises.
This is a SCAM to get the employee's pensions, by the robber-barons and corporate raiders... the wealthy getting wealthier on the backs of working people and the poor.
Why the FUCK would you defend this, or attack the workers for attempting to fight back?
R75, you're a fucking moron... can't see the forest for the trees.
Why the FUCK would you defend this, or attack the workers for attempting to fight back?
The opinions of DL don't matter for shit here.
When a company is already in bankruptcy, there isn't much room to play.
Fail to see the union victory here.
It's not about the union victory or loss, fucktard. It's about the blatent greed of those in charge, who ran the business in the ground, and 18,000 people out of a job, in order to line their own pockets.
What part of that are you not getting?
What part of that are you not getting?
A well run business will print you money for eternity. They should move their production to China like everyone else.
As the company was preparing to file for bankruptcy earlier this year, the then CEO of Hostess was awarded a 300 percent raise (from approximately $750,000 to $2,550,000) and at least nine other top executives of the company received massive pay raises. One such executive received a pay increase from $500,000 to $900,000 and another received one taking his salary from $375,000 to $656,256.
But of course idiots want to blame the unions.
the cut was 4% not 8% which was the best union leaders could negotiate. Members weren't happy, so now they have a 100% pay cut.
And now they get food stamps and unemployment and because most of their sorry asses won't bother to look for another job till after 99 weeks, they will get free health insurance.
Of course those of us who choose to work will have to foot the bill for these moochers.
Not that I haven't indulged in these confections it's that when I did it was hard to control myself from eating many, even the whole box. Physical illness and guilt followed.
For some time now I have chosen life.
R42, do you have a recipe for the Dunkin' Stix?
The unions should congratulate themselves for what they have done for the foreign worker: Hostess will either be purchased or reorganized, moving their operations out of the country. Great job union!!
And if you are going to criticize corporate management for their salaries, don't forget that union management salaries are on the same level.
Lotta would-be capitalist swine posting here. You do understand that you are part of the 99% too, right?
R102 actually Union management salaries are NOT on the same level. They did not take a 300% increase.
You can also criticize them for being overpaid but the fault here lies totally with the management.
Why doesn't the union buy the company out of bankruptcy?
All they have to do is offer more than the liquidation value of the business, which will be low, and the bankruptcy court will let them buy it.
They can fire all of management and run it like they want to. Of course, if the business continues to lose money, it will be their money lost, not the money from investors.
Or, the backers of thinkprogress or the people on here who believe it is just management's fault can do the same.
Why didn't this go to binding arbitration?
Because the CEOs were mad that Obama was elected...so they said, let's bust a union! If it were up to me, I'd be busting the heads of a few CEOs...I'd love to see that. Is there any way the employees could sue these CEOs and get into their offshore bank accounts?
R106, because the business was in bankruptcy. They had no cash left. You can't make a company stay in business.
In bankruptcy, anyone can approach the court and offer to buy the business. It goes to the group who offers the best price and the money then is allocated to the investors who own the debt in the business.
If you buy the business as is, you inherit the plants and the employees and their union contracts.
No one, not a single group, thought they could run the business profitably so the winning bid now is by someone who will sell off the land and the rights to make the brands.
The bottom line is that the inherent costs of the business are too high - the costs being primarily the salaries. This is combined with the relative unappealing aspect of the products - Twinkies are not exactly following the current nutritional trends.
They were demanding their workers take cuts in pay and benefits. Look into their history and see if the management CEOs ever took any cuts in pay. Or if shareholders profits went up up up while workers pay stayed the same.
R109, you do understand that any equity shareholders lost ALL of their invested money in this deal.....
That is what generally happens in bankruptcy.
They did not shut down the company and walk away with a bunch of profits on their investment.
Shocking how little some of you understand about this
Because the CEOs were mad that Obama was elected...so they said, let's bust a union!
The CEO was an outspoken supporter of Obama, idiot.
Oh really? And you are going to tell me that the CEO and the board did not rip off the company? Instead of making changes to fix the company, they obviously robbed the company of all it's profits. The CEO is at the top...he's paid to keep the company going. The union had already made concessions. I might be an idiot but I don't mind saying, if those at the top would stop taking all the profits...they could keep a company running and keep people employeed.
Hostess products including Twinkies are still manufactured in Quebec,Canada by Saputo Inc's Vachon Incorporated.
They do export to the USA so I wouldn't bother with stocking up or ebay scams.
Wait and see if Vachon picks up the slack.
I wish the union could buy the company. I think it's always good if the employees own a share of the company then the success of the company, is on their shoulders.
Since I know five people who have just lost their jobs (three of them 1-3 years away from retirement), I do know the higher ups will be getting a few million $, so they did have a few bucks left.
The last round of concessions were a sham, just cheap theater for the press. The company was shelled, there was no way anyone could have taken the existing operation and made it run at this point. Remember, they were hours from this same result back in 2004, and this time it was even worse.
The Teamsters took their deal, and the company has already failed to keep their promises or make the required payments for health and pensions.
Even if the union had taken this deal, the company would have gone into liquidation in a matter of months (maybe weeks) unless the hedge funds already invested came up with millions more, and one of the hedge funds has already walked away and the other had zero interest in throwing good money after bad.
They were also already closing bakeries as fast as they could, so a large percentage of the workers would have been terminated over the next several months anyway.
Everyone involved realizes that the only value this company has are the brand names, and by liquidating now the hedge funds can do a clean deal for those, maybe sell a few of the better bakeries to the new buyer (they have to bake them somewhere and we're talking very specialized factories that would take months to build from scratch), so maybe 50% of the employees wind up working for the buyer, and long term (12 months or so) that's probably as many, if not more, than would have kept their jobs if they had taken the contract.
The logical buyer is probably Bimbo, and they already operate union bakeries across the US. The Hostess employees will almost certainly get first shot with Bimbo.
This was not an irrational act by the union even if the press and the PR machine is spinning it that way. And if you believe the script for this little soap opera isn't already
written and agreed to by Hostess, Bimbo, the Unions, and probably the Bankruptcy Court, you're naive.
The dumb asses deserved it.
With 99 weeks of unemployment payments coming my way, I would also rather the company shut down than work in a twinkee bakery
OMG! I'm crying as I type!
I wish the union could buy the company. I think it's always good if the employees own a share of the company then the success of the company, is on their shoulders.
Unions can buy companies. The unionized employees at United Airlines used to own a majority of the business (before it went into bankruptcy).
The union employees at Hostess were offered 25% ownership of the company if they would accept the deal that they turned down.
The union (or anyone) could still buy the company today if they are willing to pay more than liquidation value.
The teamsters had settled, but the bakers were idiots who just wanted to screw EVERYONE over a one year 4% cut in pay.
Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!!!
Damn...I never did know how awful some of the additives are; for example: thiamine mononitrate can cause difficulty breathing, rashes, itching, and joint pain for people who have arthritis. That is one ingredient in Twinkies!
Has autism, morgellons and fibromyalgia
I never liked twinkies or any Hostess cakes. I love Drakes Devil Dogs & Yodels & surely will miss them. For those saying they will get 99 weeks of unemployment, Do you seriously think they can make it on unemployment? Most have mortgages,Car insurance, credit card bills probably up the wazoo. These people, if they don't have plenty in savings need to find a job paying near what they made or they could be forced into losing homes, cars etc & may find themselves needing to file personal bankruptcies.
There has been a MAJOR recession since 2007. That means every person in the USA has has FIVE years. FIVE FUCKING YEARS to save up for a job loss.
They should have saved a minimum of 10,000 a year.
So yeah, if they are in a situation, that is there own fault. Every American should have at least a year's worth of cash on hand.
They get food stamps, unemployment and next year free health care.
These lazy Obama supporting moochers, were too busy trying to suck more taxes from rich people who actually EARNED their money.
Sorry, if they are broke, it's there own fault.
My grocery store was sold out of all hostess products yesterday.
FUNNY BONES! Someone please round up all the FUNNY BONES!
My partner attended a work-related "pie party" last night, where everyone was supposed to bring a savory or sweet pie to share. He took a pie plate filled with a pile of Hostess Fruit Pies. He had to go to five or six different stores to find enough to fill the plate.
It was a big hit, and there were plenty of children attending to enjoy them.
These lazy Obama supporting moochers, were too busy trying to suck more taxes from rich people who actually EARNED their money.
Where to begin? Ah yes, t'hell with you, apologist freeper reichwing, um, sociopath.
All this shit is coming back. They'll sell the rights and recipes to other companies. (And no, not to Chinese companies. Chemicals in Twinkies are one thing. Lead and melamine and other nasty Chinese additives are another. Google the NYT article on food in China - yuck.)
To the individual slammed by R130. I wouldn't put any credence in his comments.
He is also R62, R67, R76, R77, R79 and R103
Some of his previous hits include
I have a friend who's husband works for them. He wasn't for the strike - He should have been. It's in solidarity that people get health benefits, weekends off, worker's comp, etc. etc. etc. etc.
Great, the friend's husband is out of work because a minority of the employees didn't agree with the plan. Sounds fair to me. I hope you're doing more than talking and donating money to help these families who are now unemployed.
If Hostess had been properly unionized and FUCKING TREATING ITS WORKERS PROPERLY from the get-go, then this would not have happened. Yikes, you better hope that Reynolds never goes out of business; otherwise, how will you make your tin hats?
Freep off, freeper-scab at [R54].
Sorry - I mean [R75], not [R54].
I take it back - [R54] can freep off as well.
Thoughtful commentary, as always.
For those saying they will get 99 weeks of unemployment
Union employees generally aren't eligible for unemployment benefits.
And I stand by every post. As you no doubt don't stand but kneel, licking the boots of your master(s).
I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of fatties suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened
Bloomberg reports that the owner of Pabst is considering a bid for Hostess.
Bloomberg reports that the owner of Pabst is considering a bid for Hostess
MMMMMM! Beer Twinkies!
Things weren't always like this.
If Obama is truly serious about keeping people working, and getting off the trend that is wiping out the middle class, he would put together a bill that changing the laws that have allowed these kinds of leveraged buyouts possible ([italic]and so gosh darn profitable for the insiders at the top![/italic]). In fact, he'd have made such a bill a priority early on in his first term. But he didn't. And I can't recall him ever dropping so much as a hint that he plans on doing so.
Gee, what do you suppose is stopping him?
"Hostess took Union members self funded pensions without their authorization to pay their debts - will not be paid back under bankruptcy"
Still think the union was being "greedy"?
Like all right-wing scams, it was about breaking the union and stealing their pensions.
Its' pure greed on the part of the already-ultra-wealthy.
FOX news in this area, blamed Obamacare.
This is why UNIONS SUCK.
They had one union, the Bakers Union. What in the hell is wrong with tradesman having unions? They do all the work...make the profit...why should they not share in the wealth?
Bet those CEOs, presidents, vice presidents, managers didn't make any concessions...it's always the workers who have to make concessions.
They let people start making fun of their products. They let people stress the fat they they aren't really healthy foods...big deal, is beer healthy? It just keeps selling.
Uh, R143, there are investors who put up the money to create and operate a company. You know, like those who buy stock on the NYSE?
Shouldn't they get the profits?
Otherwise, they will invest elsewhere
Yes, unions are part of America, just as murder is part of oakland, detroit and dc right along with welfare and section 8 housing. Why must you weenie liberals have a babysitter throughout your lives?
I've heard rumors Twinkies and such might be coming back soon...
Because obviously, R146, junk food is the only thing you're interested in, you obese cuntress.
