• I'm glad TCM is exhuming films like these. There's a swath of films that have been out of circulation, and they're a part of film history. Let them be seen. It's the 21st century, I think we have enough perspective to handle them.

• I never considered these movies, which I'd seen many times over the years, as something to get all riled up about until the hysteria here on Datalounge happened. I just accepted that this was a popular convention in old movies the way it was a very popular American stage effect during the mid-late 1800s. What should I do, jump in my time machine to throw a hissy fit for Mickey and Judy?

• r11's take on the practice is mine as well. Though I will say that the blackface scene in the otherwise enchanting Wonderbar from 1934 is still the worst I've ever seen. It's nearly unwatchable even for someone with thick skin who can view these things with historical perspective.
