That's DOCTOR Voice of the NIght, Bitches!
I'm still not entirely convinced that I'm going to be woken up in a few minutes, but I got my first acceptance letter today.
I know you're going to do it, so I'll start "It's ONLY a D.O." And you know what, I might have felt that way too, but then I went to the school, and I fell in love with it. And I think it is exactly the right place for me. I get to do what I want to do, and it honestly doesn't matter to me what letters after my name say.
And while I try to never be directly rude to anyone here, I think I've earned this much:
To every single person on this board who told me I was crazy and that I couldn't do it, FUCK YOU!
The Voice of the Night- CONGRATS!!!!!

- Yay! You rock, Dr. V.
- Congrats; What's a D.O.?
- Don't forget about us!

- How is a DO different than an MD?
- Congratulations! I thought a D.O. was pretty much the same as an M.D. At my HMO, I've had both as my primary care physician, and I didn't notice much differernce.
(Of course if you're referring to the porn star named D.O., that's another matter entirely.)

- NOW WATCH SCOTT PILGRIM!!!!
- [quote]How is a DO different than an MD?
It makes you slightly more defensive about your career. Sort of like when you go to William & Mary instead of UVA.
The Voice of the Night
- Congrats! I know a couple of D.O.'s and they had wonderful training. Enjoy your future adventures in medicine!
- Which school? A top 25?
- At most hospitals nowadays DOs, NPs, and PAs are all interchangeable stand-ins for MDs.
Anomynous%20
- Congratulations, VotN!
My family doctor was a D.O., and I thought he was the best!
- When can you start writing scrips?
- In a more serious answer, a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine is basically the same as an MD, but they tend to treat things a little more holistically. You still do all the same specialities and can compete for the same residencies, but they had a wrinkle with a touch-therapy called Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. Most DOs don't actually use it in their practices though.
The Voice of the Night
- Congrats doc. Now get rich.
- How cool is that? Congrats VotN!
Wow!
- Perhaps most amazing is that you were also able to keep up General Hospital...and other extracurriculars.
Congratulations VotN
Vincent
- Also, since I'll be eating, drinking, and sleeping this stuff for four years, those of you who've been trying to run me off will finally be rid of me come August. So, win, win.
The Voice of the Night
- And in all seriousness, thanks for all the well-wishes.
The Voice of the Night
- YAY VON!!!
- how about a do-over?
- You'll always be our nutter.
- Congrats!!!

- "basically the same as an MD" and "pretty much the same as an MD" do not equal MD. OP deserves a round of applause for achieving a longheld goal, but calling him a doctor is a stretch.
Oh, and schools with great DO programs aren't your traditional top schools. For instance, Des Moines University has a great DO program, but it's a diploma mill as far as other disciplines are concerned.

- That's great VotN! Are you finishing undergrad soon or are you a "nontraditional" (hate that word, haha) student?
- Congratulations! You have a lot to be proud of. I use to be an admissions rep for a D.O. med school. It can be tough to get in. Are you going to one of the newer schools or one of the granddaddies?
- So you.going to be . . . a chiropracter?
- At my hospital we have DOs doing emergency medicine and radiology and other stuff.
Can you be a member of the AMA?

- You'll never make it, Justin.
- Good for you, VOTN. I never understood the haters.
- I refuse to see D Os. I demand an MD. You'll end up on the graveyard shift ih Harlem lookin up the asses of fat black women
- Congrats!

- My osteopath was a huge help with my knee. My physiotherapist just kept plugging me in to machines which was no help. I needed manual therapy. Next time I hope to get a male osteopath ;-)
- R25 doesn't know what he's talking about. A practicing DO has the same responsibilities and capabilities as an MD and is in fact a doctor. That Forbes article was garbage as plenty of knowledgeable commentators already pointed out.
Congrats VotN, pursue your dreams and be successful. I doubt most of the people talking trash on here even have the first clue about what's needed to apply to medical school.
- Uhmm, how much are you gonna charge? Are you going to try and BANKRUPT the whole country with your fancy pants letters and OBAMACARE???

- One of the best justified FUs I've read on DL. Congratulations. I assume you'll be hearing from other places.
- I thought VoN was studying to be a legitimate M.D., not something quackish like osteopathy.
But, congratulations, I guess.
- Is this school in the Carribean?
- "To every single person on this board who told me I was crazy and that I couldn't do it, FUCK YOU!"
Have you really "done it" yet?
Sounds like you haven't even started.
- Congratulations and all the best!

VOTN, may I have these words for my inaugural speech in January?

- Physician and Surgeon Voice of the Night!
- Congratulations VOTN.
I prefer DOs to MDs, although my HMO does not allow its DOs to practice anything outside of the narrow confines of allopathy. I can tell my DO I'm exploring alternative treatments without getting "the look."
A friend and her husband were both DOs. After I was in a serious car wreck and had a head injury he gave me a series of treatments where he manipulated my skull. It was amazing how well that worked. By the time he was finished I was pain free.
My friend used to give me adjustments. She could tell when I needed one long before I did. They made a believer out of me.
- Congratulations, OP! That's a huge accomplishment (as you know) -- best of luck to you.
- An osteopath is a masseuse? Ugh.
- Yes, getting an acceptance letter is a huge accomplishments. I'll never forget MY first.
- I'm really happy for Voice, but I don't get it. What is the difference in training and education for and MC versus a DO? Does an MD remain in school longer? Does a longer residency?
- So DOs do chiropractic type things?
- Good job!
- Been lurking & posting here for nearly a decade VotN have always enjoyed your posts. One of the better longtimer posters here. Many congratulations and best wishes to you please keep us updated as you move towards your goal.
- Yes, R54, along with practicing medicine like a traditional M.D. A D.O. can write prescriptions, for example.
- I'm confused. You'll be starting med school? Or did you get a match with a residency program after completing med school? (sorry, but while I know VoTN, I guess I'm not up to speed on your schooling)
If you just got accepted into med school, dude, your hell is just beginning.

- Well done, sir.
- One of the best doctors I ever went to was a DO. I like doctors who do more than just push drugs.Unfortunately, I had to move out of the area.
Congrats VOTN, I've always liked your posts. and hope you can still find time to visit.
- Good for you, Voice! Great comeback.
- Congrats, VOTN! All the best to you.
- VOTN: Congratulations!
Just one thing: Please promise to keep posting here. You are one of the best and I always enjoy reading what you have to say. Don't leave us.
- Bravo! I too hope that you will continue to post.
- Congrats!! Mt partners best friend is a DO and is one of the top spinal surgeons in the country.
- This is so cool! Congrats Dr. VOTN!!!!!!!!!!
This makes me feel happy.
- Good work, VOTN. You must be exhausted. And it's just the beginning of a life of exhaustion. LOL!
I first heard about DOs because Sam Sheppard and his brothers and father were all DOs. I think he went so school in Los Angeles. He inspired my career choice - criminal law - which I guess isn't quite what he would have intended. But there you are.
I remember that he was also a surgeon so I knew they operated and it seemed everything was the same. Though IIRC they ran into some prejudice from the local medical community and when the tragedies struck there was quite a bit of schadenfreude as their successful family owned hospital suffered.
- Congratulations, VOTN. You are a class act.
One%20of%20the%20lesbians.
- Congrats, VOTN. But I'll always be The Doctor.

- Kudos, VotN.
getting too old for this shit
- congrats VON!!
- Congratulations VOTN. If we provide proof of being paid contributers on DL do we get an Eldergay discount:)?
- Big Congrats to VOTN! One of the few that are still brave enough around here to authenticate and add a certain credibility behind the posts. Better not leave us!
- YAY!! Well done!
- So, since I'm going to be a New Yorker within the next year, at what point do I get to look down my nose at the flyovers?
Or am I just branded a hick for life?
The Voice of the Night
- Hooray for Dr VOTN - our own Dr McCoy!!!!
Or Dr Pulaski?
Never liked Beverly Crusher...
- Congratulations. Getting into medical school is a big accomplishment and you should be proud of yourself. However, you come across as fairly arrogant in these posts, and you may want to reign that in. Take it from someone who knows: there is NOTHING worse than an arrogant medical student.
- PS: You are NOT a doctor yet.
- Congrats; a wonderful accomplishment! I am so proud of a fellow DL-er! May I ask where you live, Votn?
- Congrats Votn!!!! All the best for a successful career!
- This thread isn't complete without VotN announcing his opening hours where Dataloungers can consult him about their ailments.
Congrats VotN btw.
- "Take it from someone who knows: there is NOTHING worse than an arrogant medical student"
Oh yes there is - an arrogant medical practitioner.
Several of whom have told me that I'm not a "proper" doctor...
Well, I'm not a physician, but do have an MA, MSc, PhD, and D.Div (and, hoo boy - that last one was a MISTAKE)
One of them, who I personally wouldn't trust to glue a page back into a book, wanted to ban "non-Doctors" from calling themselves "Doctor"...
Only worry if I start giving medical advice...Which one is the liver, again?
- If a medical student is that arrogant before he even has his degree, how do you think he will behave once he's actually completed his training? With unending humility?
An arrogant medical student who calls himself doctor before he is one is a person to be avoided.
- [quote}If a medical student is that arrogant before he even has his degree, how do you think he will behave once he's actually completed his training? With unending humility?
Sincere practitioners will learn much humility from the medical events that they will witness, will partake in, and that will befall them.
Or so I've heard.
- Congrats Dr.VON
- r81 - But VotN isn't one of them - he's honestly documented his trials and tribble-ations (sorry!) many times...
He deserves his triumph...
- Finally. Someone to fill the void left by Jack Kavorkian.
- Congrats and good luck, VotN!
- And he can start with r85 - except it won't be voluntary...
- He already started with himself so maybe he's honed his skills.
- Congratulations DOCTOR Voice!!!!!
I am happy for you. Without you The DL would not be the same. :)
- [quote]To every single person on this board who told me I was crazy and that I couldn't do it, FUCK YOU!
To be fair, you haven't actually done it, yet, or even started doing it, so your detractors could still prove correct.
- You are not a doctor.
- I have both a primary care MD (a nice guy, well-versed in classical medicine) and a DO whom I consider a true healer. He went to the School of Osteopathy in Maine.
He's dealt with some pretty painful back/knee/musculo-skeletal issues I've had WITHOUT surgery (which my MD immediately recommended) and without a heavy dose of painkillers (which he will prescribe, but not overprescribe). He also trains and heals other health practitioners (bookmark the link below).
I think it's a wonderful practice, and wish you a great journey.
http://altarofcreation.com/
- Sincere congratulations--well done!
- Congrats, VOTN!!
I can't believe these idiots don't know what a D.O. is, when chances are good they've either 1) been to one already, or b) would rather go to one if given the choice between a D.O. and an M.D.
I only started college when I was 30, so I know what a challenge it can be to be in school when you're "older." And it's really much more of a triumph when you do it when you're "grown-up" and on your own.
And it also makes you wiser and more committed. As I know you are.
So celebrate now, but don't forget -- never let the bastards get you down.

- How did I miss this? Congratulations, Dr. V!

- My doctor is a D.O. I used to love D.O.s because I thought they were more holistic than your average M.D.
Then my gall bladder nearly burst two weeks ago after my doctor downplayed my illness. I want to sue him. I will never go to a D.O. again.
- Let's just check back in 1 year and see how you are getting on, Dr.Feelgood.
