- Mark Steines and Bob Goen were both sportscasters. Marciano was a weatherman.

- So many 'weatherman' really want to be the news anchor. In fact, the weathermen and weatherwoman all over the country (nationally and locally) have often branched out to do legit interviews on their shows even if the interview isn't exactly the hard news type. Remember that Al Roker is the Today show's weatherman, and he's now sort of a co-host--not just the weatherman on Today's 9 am hour.
Anyway, Marciano was probably tired of just doing the weather, and CNN, which is still a leading news network, was never going to make its weatherman a full-time news anchor except to maybe fill-in now and then.
So this ET gig for Marciano is the next best thing to being the news anchor...not really, but he's now sort of in charge. And he may just have wanted a change. And perhaps ET will be paying him more money than he's making at CNN. Who knows?
But Marciano is still a bit of a douchebag.
