I agree with OP. Really dreadful and hard to sit through.
It's not the worst movie ever, but it is a total desecration of a beautiful little Spanish movie, Open Your Eyes, upon which it was based.
The original starred Penelope Cruz and Eduardo Noriega (see pic). Cruz was infinitely better playing the same part in the original Spanish film.
I loved it, but I have questionable taste in movies.
I enjoyed it. I thought Cameron was great playing a needy psychotic.
Hated it. My partner and I still use it as a barometer for measuring movie dreadfulness. Horrible overacting. Cruise was crap.
The worst thing is we still remember some "in the vanilla sky!" soundtrack screeching. Is that actually in the movie or did I imagine it?
R3, you're right, I need to see the original. Thanks.
Eduardo Noriega: the Spanish Brad Pitt. (No kidding, this is how he is referred to.)
But I agree the original "Open Your Eyes" was so so much better. Even the title made more sense. The director, Alejandro Amenábar, also directed "The Others" which is a beautiful movie it its way.
Not the worst movie I've ever seen, but certainly horrid.
At the time of the release, Cameron Crowe did an interview where he was questioned about the name.
He said that Vanilla Sky was one of the names they were considering for the movie that came to be known as Almost Famous.
Crowe really liked the name, so decided to use it for the Tom Cruise movie.
I swallowed your come.
R13, that line made me laugh out loud in the theater. The movie would not have been so bad had they hired anyone other than Tom. In the Spanish version, the main character is in his 20's. And smoking hot. Tom's overacting ruined the movie. "Fuck my arm!!"
Fuck me Eduardo Noriega.
Eduardo Noreiga was in a good movie - Transsiberian (with Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer).
Vanilla Sky is a terrible movie. A depressing one, too.
Who cares what you think
I didn't like it but it certainly has more bite than most of his generic movies.
Youknow it's bat when the strange man who's been shadowing Cruise's character finally comes forward and says, "I'm now going to explain what's going on...", and after his "explanation', it still makes no fucking sense.
It wasn't a good movie, no.
But Prometheus was far worse.
I forgive Cameron Crowe for this disaster.
He made Almost Famous - and that movie brings me back to teen years in the 70s (and the movie Dazed and Confused)
One of the few movies I ever wanted to walk out of.
It was bad.A long, long time ago I rented a movie called "The Morning After" or something like that with Jane Fonda playing a drunk. Watching paint dry would have been more appealing.
Not crazy about the movie, but Cameron Diaz was fantastic in it. She deserved a Best Supporting Actress nomination for it.
You know it's a bad movie when Cameron Diaz turns in by far the best performance
This is the worst tommy girl movie ever!
Prometheus was FAR better.
The worst Cruise flick? Far and Away.
