The Vatican Says It Will Never Stop the Fight Against Gay Marriage
If only it had put this sort of energy and determination into its systematic sexual abuse of young boys. Anyone professing to be a Catholic is complicit in the Vatican's position by continuing to be associated with this organization. The Mafia has more principles.
"The Vatican, reacting to strong gains for gay marriage in the United States and Europe, on Saturday pledged never to stop fighting attempts to "erase" the privileged role of heterosexual marriage, which it called it "an achievement of civilisation".
For the second consecutive day, Vatican media weighed in with forceful editorials restating the Roman Catholic Church's unequivocal opposition.
"It is clear that in Western countries there is a widespread tendency to modify the classic vision of marriage between a man and woman, or rather to try to give it up, erasing its specific and privileged legal recognition compared to other forms of union," Father Federico Lombardi, said in a tough editorial on Vatican Radio.
Voters in the U.S. states of Maryland, Maine and Washington state approved same-sex marriage on Tuesday, marking the first time marriage rights have been extended to same-sex couples by popular vote.
Same-sex unions have been legalized in six states and the District of Columbia by lawmakers or courts.
Lombardi's editorial on Vatican Radio, which is broadcast around the world in some 30 languages, called the votes myopic, saying "the logic of it cannot have a far-sighted outlook for the common good".
Lombardi, who is also the Vatican's chief spokesman as well as director of Vatican Radio and Vatican Television, said there was "public acknowledgement" that "monogamous marriage between a man and woman is an achievement of civilisation".
WHY NOT POLYGAMY?
"If not, why not contemplate also freely chosen polygamy and, of course, not to discriminate, polyandry?" he said.
Polyandry is when a woman has more than one husband.
The Catholic Church teaches that homosexuality is not a sin but homosexual acts are. It says the rights of homosexuals should be guaranteed but that their unions should not be recognised as equal to heterosexuals and they should not be allowed to adopt children.
The constitutionality of restricting marriage to unions between a man and a woman is widely expected to be taken up by the U.S. Supreme Court soon.
The powerful U.S. Catholic Bishops conference, which is already at odds with the administration of President Barack Obama because its health care law obliges most employers to cover contraception, is expected to take a lead in trying to influence the court's decision.
Earlier this week, Spain's highest court upheld a gay marriage law, and in France the socialist government has unveiled a draft law that would allow gay marriage.
An editorial in Friday's edition of the Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, said local Catholic Churches in many countries around the world were "the sentinels of religious freedom" for opposing gay marriage.
It called support for gay marriage "an ideology founded on political correctness which is invading every culture of the world".
"The Church is the only institution to say that, while persecuting homosexuals in undoubtedly unjust, opposing marriage between people of the same sex is a point of view that must be respected," the Vatican newspaper editorial said."
Meaning they will never stop attacking gays.
Well a least the community is clearly forewarned.
Lock and load baby!
Shouldn't that be "We'll Never Stop the Fight Against Gay Marriage, Vows Vatican"?
But will they ever stop abusing children?
American Catholics have spoken, and a majority voted for Obama this election. The Vatican might need to take another look at that hard stance someday.
American Catholics seem to think they can play both sides. Vote for Obama and give the Church money. They can't.
If you are funding a hate group then you are funding a hate group regardless, of who you vote for.
What R3 said.
They'll 'never stop fighting' into irrelevance.
Fear the gays, feeeeear the gays! Giveusmoney! Fear the gays, feeeeear the gays! GiveusMOREmoney! Fear the gays, ...
Fear is an excellent revenue generator.
Vatican launches new, harder strike against Gays worldwide.
Big surprise - a religion that won't ordain women or allow it's clergy to marry has a problem with gays marrying?
Who would have believed that?
Henry VIII was right.
A verse from a Guy Fawkes rhyme (bonfire night -11.05)
A penny loaf to feed the Pope
A farthing o' cheese to choke him.
A pint of beer to rinse it down.
A fagot of sticks to burn him.
Burn him in a tub of tar.
Burn him like a blazing star.
Burn his body from his head.
Then we'll say ol' Pope is dead.
Hip hip hoorah!
Hip hip hoorah hoorah!
The patriarchy of the Catholic Church is entirely dependent on the continued marginalization of homosexuality. At least half of the men who go into the priesthood do so precisely because they are homosexual and can't deal with it. If homosexuality is normalized through marriage, closet cases will not have the same incentive to hide in the priesthood -- and the Church, which already suffers a priest shortage, will implode. The only solution would be to open up the priesthood to women, which these gray old men do not want to do. This is all about power, not morality.
What these idiots don't reaize is that no where is it law that a Church has to perform any marraige or anyone is forcing them to. We are talking about City Hall, Justice Of The Peace, shit, even Cruise Ship Captain. They don't want to, fine, then mind your own business. Ironically, any wedding could produce income for them.
Obama got a bigger Catholic vote than Romney. That tells you a lot. As for the Catholic Church's "fight" against gay marriage? Weren't they opposed to interracial marriage long years ago? Tell you what. Religions come and go, but Gay is forever!
The Christian Church or most religion for that matter would have no power at all if they wouldn't instill fear in stupid people and yet give them hope for a path to redemption which includes a great bundle of cash and a promise for a heavenly afterlife. It's practically their lifeline based on how they operate.
My mom is 82 years old and Catholic, and even she thinks that gays should be allowed to marry. Her take is that if two consenting adults love each other and want to spend their lives together, who cares how they have sex? If someone her age thinks this way, then that confirms that the church is barking up the wrong tree with this issue.
The Vatican preys on fear it created and stupidity. Only when there is no fear and stupidity left, will this stop.
"confirms that the church is barking up the wrong tree???"
So at exactly what point in history did you confirm that slavery was barking up the wrong tree? At what point did you realize that denying women the right to vote, may have been an error in judgement?
Act-Up's St. Patrick's demonstration was astonishingly important back in 1989. In my book, direct action is still the way to point out the evil of this particular cult.
Catholics making excuses for bigotry, drying to downplay the harm it does. That is summary report R29.
R30, the author of that link isn't a Catholic, just FYI.
If you read the other things on that site, you'll know the last thing that author does is try to down-play the harm things like the Pope's comments do. Quite the opposite.
...And the Gays Say They Will Never Stop the Fight Against the Vatican.
I'm curious how financial contributions to the Catholic church in the U.S. have fluctuated over the years. I'd bet that controlling for the economic downturn, contributions have gone way down. Of course, the pedophilia scandals contributed heavily, but couple it with spending outrageous amounts of money in the anti-gay campaigns (over $1 million in Minn.) and conflicting messages about morality (pedo priests get a pass, but contraception, women's health, and gays all bad), over time the hypocrisy will become too much for U.S. Catholics to open their pocketbooks. A lot of them are annoyed enough at having parish priests whose English is not very understandable.
The Vatican is by far the wealthiest organized religion on the planet. You can't sue these people out of business, they have Billion$. The only way to get to them is
****** PULL THEIR TAX STATUS **********
Their influence in the US has waned. Over 50% of Catholics support marriage equality. The Vatican and all religious extremists are looking more and more pushy and out of touch. If anything, let them keep making fools of themselves. We're winning, and we're going to win in the end.
I just read somewhere that Italy was starting to tax the Vatican/Catholic Church.
When can we start?
The Vatican is the only state in the world where we constitute a solid majority. Obviously it's a class issue there.
And they will never allow democracy, because then we would set the rules!
[quote]Religions come and go, but Gay is forever!
That would make for a snappy T-shirt, R14.
The USA needs to tax Evangelical Christianity, that is who does the real damage over here.
The Vatican does more damage in Europe.
